there's nothing to say that the NX and Daedalus weren't in service at the same time. As with TOS while the Constitution class was primarily shown there were other classes that existed at the same time but weren't really discussed. Perhaps the NX was to expensive to build many and the Daedalus filled the gap.

The Romulan War and Birth of The Federation book series did a great job retconning everything to mature it fit, and I think you both would be satisfied with it. Yes, Daedalus does predate the NX, but during the war it turned out the Daedalus cod be easily produced by comparison and could be upgraded. with the founding of the Federation, Daedalus became Earth's work horse, the NX'S having almost all being lost in the war and the NX-01 being so badly damaged that she was decommissioned and put in the fleet museum. The NX-REFIT IS in the books :)

Ooooh I like the sound of that story, but it begs the question; How/why would it be more difficult to produce a NX ship with at least a warp 4 engine versus a Daedalus with its base warp 4.5 engine (not to mention its spherical section). Was this question answered in the book series or was it dropped/ignored? I want to read them but at the moment I am broke. 😫😖😭😿😢

I think Daedalus across all sizes is cannon. Look at aircraft carriers during WWII. They shared similar defining traits, but their sizes got bigger and bigger. As far as the whole NX and Daedalus history is concerned there is no reason for both not to be right. Maybe the vary first (much smaller) Daedalus class vessels served only in Starfleet when it was a purely earth only force. When the U.F.P. finally formed the Daedalus which was a proven space frame was updated and enlarged. This would make it the predecessor to the Constitution.

Gotta disagree with you on that. Sure the Daedalus is an interesting ship but I honestly love the NX Class even though it kinda sorta looks more advanced but in the long run the NX is more human than the Constitution Class. The reasoning this would never have been chosen is simply because of familiarity. We have the Connie, Galaxy and Sovereign with circular primary hulls and enlongated secondary hulls although the Defiant and kinda Voyager is the exception to this but fit within their own requirements of the universe and are both loved by fans. This new look with a Ball as the Primary hull and 100% cylinder secondary would look kinda jankey to passive viewers and would remove similarity. The reasoning for the show name is also because of similarity, audiences can identify with the name "Enterprise" much better than any other name they could have picked and ended up using the NX series as the basis for the Shuttle names, NX-01 Enterprise, NX-02 Columbia, etc.

Per the Romulan War Enterprise Series, the Daedalus Class was the backbone of the fleet because it could be built twice as fast as the NXs. From your study, the discrepancies in configuration and size could be based on the need for these ships in war and different cruiser sizes. the 140m could be Daedalus with the smaller being a destroyer/frigate. The 230 could be a max for rescue or crew plus MACOs. Regular crew size could have been 100-150. The later 209m could be the exploration cruisers like Horizon mentioned by Kirk. The active period you discussed could be the war destroyer/cruisers with them being eventually Solar System Defence Ships or sold as Foreign Military Sales starships to less developed cultures.

The NX-01 was in service from 2151 to 2161, where the signing of the federation was finalised. The other NX class ships did remain in service for a few more years, while the Daedalus class was brought in as more of a science vessel at this point, and was more of a precursor to the Obirth class ship, leaving the remaining NX class ships to slowly be replaced by the ships we see in early Axanar timeline (the JJ look ships). At this point, we can add events of Axanar as cannon, and it's safe to assume that Daedalus class ships by this point have either been destroyed, or retired from a lengthy service. Due to the length of their active service, it's safe to say the ship is modded several times, and should weigh in at around the 195m length - slightly shorter than NX ships, as there is much less crew space too, and to keep the proportions right for the shuttle bay.

Current thinking is that the Daedalus was about 10 years older than NX and was planned to be phased out. But when the Romulan war started they received a major refit. Their modular design lent well to upgrading and the shipyards could pump out 3-4 new Daedalus for every single NX. After the war the Daedalus continued to fit new upgrades well and soon outpaced the NX performance. NX integrates design didn’t upgrade well, forcing expensive secondary hills to be added. NX soon was phased out while Daedalus simply kept on going, long outlasting ships meant to replace it.

Daedalus Class Starships were Federation Starfleet vessels. They were built to explore and to fight in the Romulan Wars. It was established more than 30 years ago that they were designed and commissioned in the 2160's and the last was decommissioned in 2197 (DATA, ST:TNG). That being said the ship was a Matt Jeffries concept design that was considered and rejected for the shooting model of Kirk's ship for Star Trek the Original Series.

The J class was built to service 'far away outposts' - so needed to be faster. These 'far away outpost' most likey had fewer people so the cargo was smaller. The Y class was built to service 'nearby colonies - so they didn't need to be as fast. These 'nearby colonies' had a larger and growing population so the cargo was larger. The overall time for these mission trips for both classes may have been the same. Overall I think the directive at this time was expansionist but not invasive of an claimed territories of other space faring civilisation. I think the idea of these 'space haulage' ships came to the developement of the Deadalus Cargo ship - which was robust and simple to build. This same ubiquitous design at the time of the Romulan war was easy to build and easy to upgrade to NX01 strengths. The reason it seems to be overlooked is because it was in the beginning a non 'military' design which was accepted in very dire times for Earth. These ships where (possibly) 'de-militarised' and given to colony worlds - the same ways AK47s where given to developing nations here on Earth. And that is why these ships are both great and overlooked - they could take a 'licking/(kicking)' and still carry on 'ticking'. That is why they are my favorite ship.

In Enterprise novelization the Daedalus class came AFTER the NX01. The Reason why it was built was it took a lot less time to build. With the Romulan War just starting, the Federation needed many ships as fast as possible. The Sphere hull was much easier the manufacture because all the exterior hull plating had the exact same curvature. The saucer design had less commonality in plating. They still built 5 NX class starships which were used as the lead ships alongside the Daedalus class. The Daedalus was slightly slower because the NX class originally was a technology demonstrator so it had the most advanced engines. In time of war quantity trumped quality so the timeline does work out. Even the hull registry numbers say the Daedalus were built as Federation ships not a United Earth Starship.

The NX class would be the Essex class or Iowa Class ships equivalents. I would expect each shipyard- especially in different systems- was producing somewhat different versions. Local technical issues would be getting solved locally due to travel times, I suspect the subspace network was not quite in place like it is in the later shows after all the UFP is just getting started.

The simple explanation for the Enterprise/TOS inconsistency is that Enterprise takes place in a timeline created AFTER STNG:First Contact. In the episode Regeneration, the Borg sphere crash site is discovered. TOS happens in a timeline before the STNG crew and the Borg contaminated the timeline(it's also possible the rest of the STNG movies take place in the Enterprise timeline or that the temporal cold war is a result of the abramsverse creation.

That was the reason given as to why the NX-01 was just Enterprise and not USS Enterprise.

I always like to think that the sphere part could be detached and left in orbit as a research outpost or as the first part of a new Starbase.

I believe that the nx-01 enterprise was created in an alternate time created after the movie first contact. There Cockrane saw the Enterprise-E and was inspired by its design of the saucer. In the original timeline he wasn't biased by what he saw was the future design and didn't push for a saucer. Cochrane was said to be influence in is design. That was also why he picked its name. In the Motion Picture the nx-01 was not shown in the list of Enterprises shown to the probe-Ilia. decker said it was all the ships named Enterprise. He wouldn't miss one made relatively recent compared to the others.

Akihito Koizumi Actually he said all the ships pictured were named Enterprise, NOT that the ships pictured were all of the ships named Enterprise. Case in point, one of the ships pictured was the United States Navy Carrier Enterprise. The United States Navy has had 7 ships named Enterprise, and is getting an eighth one- the Gerald Ford Class carrier CVN 80.

Hmm. According to the timeline the Daedalus was built at the very start of the federation. Slowly gathering together. Cheap scout vessels where high on the list(Like they usually are in any build it type computer game) It's probably got really good sensors and is modestly nippy. The warp 4.5 thing isn't so bad if it has really good fuel mileage(It could probably cruise at that speed without refuelling for far longer than NX) 2166-ret 2196. so the feds got 30 years out of them(Well of the 6 that where built a fair few where lost, but then again so where a few constitutions. space is bloody dangerous) Speaking about constitutions 2245 so the Daedalus was gathering dust in a junkyard somewhere 50 odds years before she was a twinckle in her designers eye.

i could be wrong but, i always thought the Daedalus class was built during the Romulan war, when the NX class repeatedly found itself outmatched by the Romulan ships of that era... for example the Daedalus had shields and the NX didn't, ... the NX could only polarise its hull

one note about the "missing link"....It doesn't have to be. In the US Navy....Each style of ship has its own numbering...carriers are only up to soon 80 keels laid... Destroyers at 1000...same with LPH, LHA LPd...so maybe nx-01 experimental may not have been the ;ink to the connie...Daedalus could have gone its own direction hence the 3 digit registry. Or the true creators of Trek just said.."hmmm why not".

I imagine the nacelles and hulls broken down into components, being launched as payload on rockets. There is literally no need to build these in space. Also, cylinders and spheres are the perfect pressure vessels.

most of these are fan art and different visions of what the class should look like. the size chart is from a discussion of how large the ship ought to be.. the 104m size is the "official size", the larger sizes are attempts to explain how you could cram 300+ people on the thing.

If the Excelsior, Oberth and Miranda classes could be built, refit and upgraded for 100 years I think the Deadalus class could have been too. It was a very purpose built, work horse with an adaptable design that was probably cheap to produce and easy to upgrade.

When did they say in "Enterprise" that the Deadalus-class came before the NX-class. In the "Enterprise" episode "These are the Voyages..." Reed mentions that Archer will likely get command of "...one of those Warp 7 beauties" and we know the Constitution-Class is capable of higher speeds than and Warp 7. According to Memory Alpha Daedalus-Class ships were active until 2196 and we know the NX-Class Enterprise was decommissioned in 2161, assuming a Ship Class life expectancy of about 20 years that would put the Daedalus-Class active years from 2176 to 2196. These dates would put the launch of the first Daedalus-Class and the decommissioning of the NX-01 at approximately 15 years apart with the Daedalus-Class being closer to Constitution-Class than the NX-Class in terms of time.

would be nice if one of the new shows would throw a Daddy class in there somewhere and canonize it.

When the Daedalus is mentioned in TOS she is considered a truly ancient design. Less a direct precursor to the Constitution and more Earth's first true manned space exploration vessel. Also, while I'm very much unimpressed with Enterprise, that there must have been other classes of vessel in service before the Constitution is just so obvious it hurts. Good show though.

The Daedalus class wasn't mentioned by name in TOS. It was never mentioned until TNG ep "Power Play".
