W/O a wind guage how does one know windspeed??
@HorusVision
5 жыл бұрын
That Dave is the million dollar question. Time in the field watching airflow patterns, using a meter and some type of windsock or flag to see the amount of deflection the wind is causing it to move. It doesn't have to be fancy but take your wind meter out and take various readings, documenting the know wind speed and angle of deflection caused on the windsock or flag. This will take time to get proficient but after you feel more comfortable reading the wind with the meter and flag substitute the flag using native vegetation, ie, trees, bushes, mirage, or dust kicked up from a missed shot out at further distances. Here is a link to an older Tactical manual that may be of assistance, start on page 48. We have a new HORUS wind meter coming out soon that will be of assistance. You say multiple times it's calibrated for your particular rifle no matter the caliber. I just don't see how that's possible. You'd need some very particular velocities and BCs to achieve that and there's no way the same dots will be the same hold for every weapon. What was the original load this reticule was made to accommodate? Thanks.
@HorusVision
5 жыл бұрын
The original round was the 175 gr, 7.62x51- LR118. The T-3 reticle is a mil based reticle and the only part you need to calibrate is the wind dots. I hope this helps.
@jtmcfarland3512
5 жыл бұрын
Horus Vision , thank you for that information! If it's not too much trouble, could you also tell me the velocity assumed with that round? Then I should have all the info I need to calculate a good comparable load. Love the video btw
@HorusVision
5 жыл бұрын
@@jtmcfarland3512 The published info on the LR118 is 2650.
@Pretzulkj
5 жыл бұрын
@@jtmcfarland3512 The way it works is you figure out the wind speed for a single wind dot for your bullet traveling at the velocity of your load to calibrate it. The wind dots are time of flight based, which means they'll work the same for any round but the wind speed between rounds for each dot will change. For example, the 5th wind dot at a 1 MIL vertical hold is 1 MIL of wind hold. Use your dope chart to find what distance equals a 1 MIL hold, then at that distance change the wind speed in a ballistic calculator (using your bullet BC and velocity) to find out how much wind it takes to require a 1 MIL wind hold. Divide this wind speed by 5 and you have the wind speed for each individual wind dot, regardless of elevation. Similarly, at 8 MILS of vertical hold the first wind dot is at 0.8 MILS. If you find your distance that leads to an 8 MIL vertical drop, then all you have to do is change the wind speed until your wind hold for that distance is 0.8 MILS. That will give you the same wind speed for 1 wind dot as the method I described earlier, you just can skip the divide by 5 step. That's what makes the reticle so useful, because it can be calibrated to work with any caliber, bullet, or muzzle velocity so long as you calibrate the wind dots and know what wind speed each dot correlates to.
@Pretzulkj
5 жыл бұрын
@@HorusVision I provided an explanation in another reply to the comment above this one on how to calibrate the wind dots properly. Feel free to check it out and make sure it looks good to you, though I understand the theory behind the wind dots and am pretty sure it'll be solid.

I sent an email to Horus Vision, but no response so I'll post something here. I find it utterly ridiculous to have a reticle as nice as the Horus added to profoundly overpriced scope that have large turrets on it. It's all but impossible to find a scope with a Horus reticle that doesn't have those stupid overpriced scope setups with large turrets. The whole Idea of the Horus reticle is to be able to NOT use the turrets and accurately switch targets quick WITHOUT the need to adjust the turrents. So why in the hell would you mount this reticle on a stupidly overpriced scope with large turrets?? Yes I understand that some may want the best of both worlds, but it seems that everyone that has licensed this reticle has paired it with scopes sporting large target or tactical turrets. It just seems to fly in the face of the whole idea behind the Horus reticle.

Hey, thanks so much for responding. I suppose I wasn't clear enough. My apologies for that. I'm not asking to remove the turrets completely... That would be stupid. What I'm saying it is. Why can't you guys use regular turrets instead of those crazy large target turrets? A scope that would use small turrets that could be covered by a scope caps. I'm asking for a scope that has standard turrets with scope caps and the Horus reticle. That way I can zero the rifle and make any slight adjustments when I might move to a different load or shooting area, but once dialed in I rely only on the Horus Reticle. If the Horus reticle is so awesome then you don't need really large target turrets when plain old regular turrets will get you dialed in and the Horus will take it from there.
