in world war one and two! They would have straightened trench systems.. which would often result in shells landing in the trench causing shrap metal to inflict Heavy casualties! Now dayz we zig zag are trenches so a machine gunner cant hop in and mow down a bunch of soliders or a shell lands in and whipes everyone thats close out!

The Great War trenches ran some 500 miles from the North Sea to the Swiss border. Each side usually dug three, often in zigzag patterns. Not surprising their remnants are still visible today.
