It looks hard to look over the fence before opening the gate for anyone that isn't tall and right behind the gate you're already in danger at the speed these trains are driving. Even for a protected car crossing they'd go much slower here and for an unprotected one which this one would qualify for they'd crawl.

@@forbeswatson _"I would be careful if I had to use these crossings"_ Of course, all you need to do is look both ways and if you see or hear a train coming you wait for it to pass (and check for a second one - that gets some people). It is then safer than crossing a road because you don't need to make fine judgements, and the driver can't suddenly speed up and steer at you (I've had that crossing roads). Trouble with railway crossings is that many people know no more about trains than they read in the _Thomas the Tank Engine_ books. They seem to think that a railway line is some industrial relic that isn't in much use, and even if it is they think trains do anout 20mph, with the driver stopping it like a car if they see you, while giving a cheery wave out of the window. If they have ever been on a train it is likely to have been a preserved heritage line, and the impression they give does not help. FWIW I have both driven trains and worked on the track of 3rd rail electrified running main lines. Things are only dangerous if you don't approach them properly and with common sense.

People need to realise just how dangerous trains really are. They weigh hundreds of tonnes, can reach extremely high speeds, they take an absurd amount of distance to stop and they can't steer to avoid you. @@robtyman4281The issue with flashing lights is it makes people complacent. It makes them less likely to check, which most of the time would be ok, but what if they fail or get damaged? Someone will look and go “Oh, not flashing, must be safe to cross” when in actuality the lights have failed and a train is bearing down on them. There are foot crossings with lights, and the issue I mentioned is not unheard of. The only real solution is to have crossing keepers for most crossings, which wouldn’t be cheap. @@lexlayabout5757 Ok. in UK and USA there is a common law system and you can't cancel an acquired right of transit (probably it's referred at the time of enclosures in XVI century), in Italy and most part of Europe there a civil law system. Anyway in Italy you are not allowed to enter railway lines unless signalled otherwise, you may incur in a penal trial. And there is a long trail started many years ago to eliminate pedestrian and road crossings without safety. All road level crossings must have bars, lights and acoustic signals. The pedestrian ones had been susbstituted with under or overpasses. So we have much severe laws regarding railway safety.

Some of these people might be heading for a Darwin award. As many have said it is the drivers I feel for

Near miss? You have to be joking - plenty of time in all these alleged "near misses". As to the photography, while it's not something I'd want to do for any particular reason, if there is no train anywhere near, then there is no risk - QED. There are far too may people sitting at home wanting to pass judgement these days. As long as you are aware and check both ways, there is no more risk of harm on a railway line as there is in a field, provided no train is coming.

Surprised that couple with the child didn't set up a picnic.....huge fines for that carry on. Train driver could spend the rest of his life in courtrooms and prison.......

The train driver would not be blamed. I worked for a UK railway and knew several drivers who had suicides or other deaths under them. They are badly shaken up, and that is bad enough.

Gone are the days where the signalman could remotely lock the gates. Go back to locking gates like B.R did at road crossings. Does anyone remember the locking devices that would hold the gates, esp' the pedestrian ones at level crossings?

If it's a public crossing, why does the title say tresspass ??

Because some of the people shown are wandering along the track, outside the crossing area - such as the girl in the chair.

that walkway should be removed, and and replaced with an overpass.

An "overpass" (you mean a footbridge) is very expensive to install these days, if not physically impossible in many places, thanks to the disability lobby who demand that everything new is wheelchair accessible. A new footbridge has to have massive (and ugly) zig-zagging slopes up to it.

The fronts of trains should be made of stronger material to prevent ANY level of damage to it and when they succeed at ridding us of bad genes, the trains should simply continue on their ways. There’s really no need for any todo about it. They’re splatter putty anyway.
