Im now 70, your videos fill me with nostagia. My first train set 1959 was R3M , the metro Cammel st with battery controller, it needed 3 bell batteries. Christmas 59, i was 6 , i woke up , it was so cold and dark, I opened the box in the dark, it was freezing in the bedroom. I almost peed my self with joy and excitment. I wentq down stairs and lit the gas fire and played with it on the floor. Happy days, simple days wheN being a child was SO GOOD.

Your videos are so inspirational. I am so looking forward to the day I can start my own layout. I arrived in the UK from South Africa a few months ago and am in temporary accommodation until I get myself sorted. All the models I have acquired over the past ten years or so abroad were shipped and are in storage for the time being. As soon as I find where I want to settle, I shall begin my project. In the meantime, I am still accruing extra things on ebay which have eluded me whilst living overseas. The EMU is one of my favourites. I recall reading in the Pat Hammond book that because the real one operated on the southern lines, the model wasn't as popular elsewhere in the country and sales weren't as strong. Thanks for your hard work.

Great video. The upper level return loop will be fabulous. The Triang EMU head code is a letter. They were used to designate services for signallers. But passengers soon knew what they meant too. So the V is Waterloo to Earlsfield, Teddington, Richmond. So the London suburbs.

Hi Oscar. Nice condition for their age. As a youngster, I used to travel on Southern BR EMUs and lived in Wimbledon facing the Waterloo main and suburban northbound and southbound railway lines, then eventually went on to work at Wimbledon Station. I noticed that Triang produced packs of 3-car units when in actual fact, in reality, all BIL units were run as 2-car and 4-car units, as were the SUB units. In the rush hour, 4-car units were sometimes doubled up to form 2×4-car units making a rake of 8 cars. Just thought I'd point that out. Paul. 👍❤

Love the overhead railway and station. It's going to be great when it's finished. The EMU reminds me of the prototype Red Rattlers in Sydney (Tri-ang made a model of them, R.450) going across the elevated Circular Quay station. Even the sound is similar due to the ribbed wheels. Back in the day when you could ride along with the sliding door open taking in the balmy summer Sydney weather. No air conditioning back then and terribly dangerous of course. Guy

Hey Oscar, you are an inspiration to me having rediscovered model railway in the NZ 2020 lockdown. This emu was my boyhood train set complete with a separate carriage and goods wagon and series 3 rails, approx 1964 I think. I'm not even sure how my widowed mother could have afforded it but think she was helped by an organisation called Birthright as my father, originally from Wales, was killed in a road accident that year. Anyhow I pulled the set out in 2020 and watched clever UK people on KZitem so I could restore it. It's been running beautifully on the super 4 track which I'm gradually collecting. I'm visiting the UK in September and have been sending bits and pieces to my sister there as part of my ongoing obsession with model railway 😁 Unfortunately Ebay have outrageous shipping costs to this part of the world so I no longer use that ripoff merchant. All the best and thanks for the video.

Good morning, It's great to hear about your original set from the early 60s, must have some amazing memories attached to it, eBay shipping costs can be a little on the steep side even locally here in the UK especially for single small items, the rising costs imposed by the Royal Mail are not helping.. some of the other budget carriers are proving to be quite unreliable, Hope you'll be able to get your growing collection back to New Zealand and have fun with it. Hi, Great to hear about the modifications you made to the EMU end unit, if it works for your railway and your having fun, that's all that matters in the end, items in the Tri-ang range have been used as starting points for modelling than projects by many in the past due to easy availability and cost. Thanks Oscar, great to see the progess on the upper level, and the Triang EMU, another of my favourite models, I have a few, some are a bit uncared for but they do run. I'm fairly sure, although a Southern Region expert may know better, the code on the model is an actual 'V' rather than a Roman numeral, the Southern did use letter as well as numerical codes.

Morning, Gordon, the clothes Peg, a very low tech item, but certainly does the job, especially for those of us who keep turning the controller in the wrong direction.. Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Your layout gets better every time I see it,well done. The elevated station section is coming on fine, I can't wait to see it completed. Your Triang southern suburban electric train has always been one of my favorites, I've never had one but would like one. My mum and dad could never afford to buy me new model railways, it was always second hand. But that didn't matter to me, I was just so happy with what I had. Wish I still had them now, and my mum and dad But yes Oscar, the new elevated section will look amazing when it's completed. Does your 3D printer let you make copies of Triang station buildings ? I am a technical dinosaur unfortunately so I don't understand what you can do and can't do with the technology. Anyway Oscar, keep up the good work, your doing fine. I am going to make another cup of tea and a slice of toast and marmalade again. Stay safe Oscar, looking forward to your next video already.😊👍🚂🚃

3D printing does have limitations. The volume of the printer cube limits the size of the object. A station could be printed in parts, just as Triang molded it in parts. More subtle limitations include the printer resolution (dot size), accuracy (did the dots go generally where you wanted) and repeatability (wobbly walls look terrible). Oscar is doing a wonderful job BTW.

I actually saw a lot of old stuff today and went a bit mad! One of the items I picked up was the three car EMU set, no boxes but cheap. Strangely, I'd always assumed that these were based on an electrified, Southern item which, when you mentioned the ribbed wheels (to simulate diesel noise) and the BR decals got me puzzled! Another Triang item I got was a four wheeled snow plow wagon, not seen that before.

@oscarpaisley
Жыл бұрын
Hi, from what I read, Hornby Dublo didn't specifically make any elevate accessories for three rail system, I believe there was a modular system developed by Hornby-ACHO for two rail possibly manufactured in France for a period of time and illustrated on the back of one of the later uk catalogues its thought to have limited compatibility with a three rail system. I've not seen any in real life, just the very small illustration mentioned and one photograph in Michael Forster's book. Neither this ACHO system or Tri-ang's Systems seem to ever have entertained the idea of running the tracks above each other, they just seem to deal with crossing/flyover, with the exception of Ore unloading bridge which makes provision for one Rail to run under another, but only under the unloading Bridge. Maybe next time there could be elevated three rail track although climbing/wheel slip may be an issue from the few experiments I've made, a much longer/ gradual incline like the one on my last layout (almost 4 meters) would be needed it practice. Thanks again. Oscar

Hi Oscar, Loved to see your EMU in action. Mine dates from 1958 and have the earlier coupling. The motor bogie was refurbished by David at ‘Scalespeed’ about 3 years ago and runs today (via a ‘Gaugemaster ‘W’ controller) better than when first purchased. The wheel sets were replaced with smooth pattern during the refurb.. I have the maroon suburban coaches but will now lookout for the green ones to complete a 4 car BIL set. I need to replace the ‘V’ panel on the driver car and have been advised, via UTube comment, that a spare ‘V” is on the back of the blank panel in the trailer car! Also could you advise the % slope of the incline that your set appears to handle with ease. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing such interesting content.
@oscarpaisley
Жыл бұрын
Good morning Tony, nice to hear about your EMU and it's modifications, I've had three motors refurbished by ‘Scalespeed’ about 18 months and been very pleased with them, one for a diesel Pullman another for a Battle of Britain class Winston Churchill and a spare I had sitting around on the bench, which drew too much current, All are excellent. The panel on the dummy end of mine just has a white plastic insert with no V on the backside of it, possibly, it's been replaced in the past. The incline I'm using at present is exactly as Tri-ang suggest, one peir at each track joint, however, the first part of the incline is on a curve and they are large radius curves, so the first three sections of the rise are more gradually. I was worried that I would have trouble getting things to climb! my last layout, the incline what is the best part of 4 meters. Hope that's of some help, Take care. Oscar

Hi, when I took the last railway down, I found some of the part had shrunk very slightly. For instance, the base's for the elevated piers to make them higher were exceptionally tight to remove from the piers having stood on railway for a year or so. I’m a bit of a fan of H&M controllers. I’ve had a Duette since I was a kid, and bought another one together with a Clipper from EBay a few years ago. I’ve never had a problem with fine control. When I need it I just use the high resistance setting. When you do the reverse loop could you explain to us how to wire it up? It’s one advantage of 3-rail which I’m discovering with my current 3-rail build. I’d never had a return loop until now with the new layout and it really is so practical that I’d like to incorporate one in my future 2-rail layout but have no idea how to make it work. Another fine video Oscar. Thanks.

Hi Robin, I had not had a return loop before either, as a way of turning a train they are great fun. I’ll try and get a wiring plan in at some point. It was a very straightforward in the end. while a return loop is useful with 2 rail track its more trouble then its worth. Did they make double isolating rails in series 3 track?
@mikehebdentrains
Жыл бұрын
Actually, it only requires two single isolating tracks, both breaking the outer rail of the two forming the loop. The power supplied to the inner rail is provided by the switching part of the point - so automatically changes polarity when the points are changed. A relay could be used to automatically change the polarity of the isolated (outer) section of rail too, to match the point setting - or a simple switch to do the same. (Tri-ang yellow lever frame would work) Sidewalls will need modifying though! ETA: You still have to stop the train in the isolated section while you change the points/polarity though, as you also need to reverse the power controller for the onward journey!
@oscarpaisley

Hi Oscar, It is marvelous the small differences that creep into some of these models? At approx 9:17 into the video one can see that (on your model) the "dummy" motor car has a plastic bogie at the cab end that matches the die-cast bogie on the powered unit? This bogie has a "collector shoe" modeled for, what in real life would have been a 'third rail' electrical pick up.. Now, I have two of these EMU sets, and neither "dummy" has this bogie to match up to the "power car" in the sets? Apart from the motor bogie all of the other 3 bogies are just the standard "coach versions" of the time? Mine were bought in Tasmania, so perhaps the "export model" may have been just slightly different? ? I have replaced the lamp in mine with an LED, to burn more brightly at lower speeds and the destination code shows up quite nicely without "going like the clappers"? I think that these models could also look a lot better with seating units and a few passengers added. But the set units are very hard to find out here? Great video as usual. Ta very much..

Good morning Robin, it's amazing how some of Tri-ang models have so many changes over such relatively short periods of time, products constantly evolving. I'm fairly sure early models here didn't have the dummy motor bogie with all the extra detail when first released here in the UK, possibly added at the beginning of the 60s. With ribbed roofs and seating added shortly afterwards.The LED modification sounds like a great idea, I think I should give it a go when time permits. Thanks again for watching take care. Oscar
