The studio does not have the budget of a US TV studio. No one does. So for example, the car chases in this series are minimal; no shoot outs with machine guns; no big explosions. Instead the Brits compensate with a focus on the individuals and their low key interactions with each other. Not unlike the Agatha Christie novels and films and the Sherlock Holmes episodes. A long tradition of such films.

British mysteries/detective shows are 1000 times better than USA TV which is very lame. The acting of the Brits is superb! I quit watching American TV when I found these programs.

More intelligent viewers don't want 'car chases, machine gun shoot outs and big explosions'! We want excellent story lines and great acting and writers like Lynda La Plant have provided the world with lots of excellent entertainment over many years.

It's a nice change from US Police dramas which insist upon handsome/beautiful lead actors, to see the UK being more realistic and using an unattractive lead actress and a short, unattractive old-age pensioner for lead male.

Honestly, the woman who plays Mikes partner & lost her baby, which was sad, is very mismatched in this series. Plus, I don't think either of them really love the other as they say they do. I think they're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. They are both career type individuals that could never commit to a normal family lifestyle. I honestly thought she would abort. I think the only reason she didn't was due to the other lady talking her out of it. They still called the baby "it" even tho the end. I was hoping they would have given the sex of the child. If she was pregnant in real life, after seeing her bulge, I would have guessed it was a boy. I'm right probably 95-98% of the time when I guess on real life pregnancies. And, I guess on people I don't know and ask them not to tell me anything. It's simple really, but I'll keep the secret to myself. Thanks for sharing. L :)

Oh my. Some of the English and Scots brogue - I can barely understand it even with the captions. And the English complain about the way the Americans speak! Universal education ought to be universal, a common language would go a very long way toward helping people get along better. We barely know what anyone else is saying these days. Failure to communicate.

Lol. Being a Belg, having Flemish, some sort of French an Some sort of German best understanding.. Flemish? Living those on the coast not even understanding those to the boarder of German.. (something like your experience having..) Being funny some how: Understanding even Danish, South Afrikaans.. Having no problem to understand even Scotchs, Wales, Irish..Australian or Americans.. The fun being: Born in central Africa.. long time ago, being European..as a kid trying to understand what ever..(maybe lucky.. maybe not.) trying to adept anyhow. Understanding easily made.. for me. Being punished my whole live in writing.. as kid..Even Swahili understanding..but don't ask me how to write or read! Falling!

Except for native Americans, and the Africans brought to America, I was taught that the majority of the first settlers came from Britain so all British accents would have been understood until the accents changed in America. Americans also changed the British spelling which their ancestors had used. Can’t agree with having a common language worldwide as we’d lose the diversity of the world. Understanding can be worked on. I speak 9 (reading and writing 7) languages and they were learned as I was interested.

Watch Blade Runner, there is a “lingua franca’” used throughout. An ersatz mix of American English, Spanish, Chinese that allows for business transactions, but specific language for personal discussions. There is strong evidence for deliberate use of slang/dialect (Cockney, Polari, Ebonics....) to set up the very differences to evade detection and invasive understanding. Even the Navajo language (google Navajo Code talkers) used to protect open communications in time of war. Language unites as well as it divides.
