Trialling an old system and appreciating my new !
For the last 15 years I have just lunged in either one single rein or double lines .i stopped using side reins due to me believing I was less able to soften and allow , or ‘go with the horses’ when necessary. Particularly believed this with the young ones , as I hate them feeling ‘trapped ‘ in the contact as you cannot release anything that is not direct to the bit and your hand .
This morning I saw a great post with a professional using side reins lunging , looked good so I thought I would give it a go to try again . Am I missing something?
Well - I am thankful my horses are so expressive about their likes and dislikes, as I videoed Princes’ response.
They were pretty loose , as he’s never had them before. But he was initially reluctant to move forwards , then reasonably submissive but guarded in the trot , then in the canter he just let rip ! I have not seen him so angry ! I actually struggled to settle him even after taking them off .
He is a beautiful horse to lunge usually with one rein or double . You can see this in the second video .
The moral of the story for me is to confirm , horses are so sensitive, they like to be able to use their necks to stretch and seek the contact forwards , this helps with their balance , relaxation and softness throughout their bodies , rather than a short contact and tightness throughout the whole horse ! Worth remembering that their frame and outline is a result of correct balance and suppleness and if they can’t work happily in the frame you want yet , it could be better to think longer term strength and suppleness than just shorten the contact .
