My only complaint is that the jungle of vision is only open up for one of the 3 possible endings. I use to farm the ??? seeds there. I ended up using mainly rank 2 characters for most of the Benevedon fights because I didn't know where to get the seeds and wasn't getting the class items i wanted. As for comparing it to FF7Re. Trials is a the full game with an extra scenario at a bargain price, and FF7Re is a pretty trial at full price.

14:30 - You know you could just disabled the voices if you don't like them and just play it like the original where there are no voices. Just go to Options, go to the character voices meter and turn it all the way down to 0. You could still hear the grunts and sounds from the enemies and environments just that every character's voice in the game can't be heard. The same thing could be said about the mission structure, the mini-maps, the yellow star marker where it tells you where to go next, and such. All these could be turn off if you prefer a more non-linear gameplay experience.

The actor that voiced Charlotte did a great job, it's a challenge to sound like a mix between elmer fudd and a girl from jersey and be consistent in that performance. Full makeover should be reserved for games that had a lot of promise, but were limited by system or hardware constrants, such as Castlevania 2 which wanted to be Symphony of the Night before Symphony of the night was a thing. I'm pretty sure that game would've become a huge success if it had been released during the late years of the SNES era or PS era. Or even a more less known game like Soukaiji which had lots of great ideas but was held back hard by Playstation's limited memory, they even ahd to weaken the graphics to make the game work. And I'm sure that game would've been an overwhelming success if it was released for PS2 where it would have the necessary power to add all systems without removing anything.

Loved the video. Great job on it. However, I do recall (it was either EGM, EGM2, or Diehard Gaming) where the reviewer stated that the story of Seiken Densetsu 3 was bad compared to Secret of Mana. If I recall correctly, the example they gave was something like "That guy is bad? I will help you in defeating him and save the world." Also, Seiken Densetsu 1/Adventures of Mana had 3 remakes, not 2. There is the Sword of Mana and Adventures of Mana, but also, a mobile version people call "Seiken Densetsu Mobile." Like Adventures of Mana, it is a faithful remake to the Game Boy original, but with 16 bit graphics.

I've always loved Secret of Mana, it's my first RPG. I've personally never finished it, but I believe that's going to be a challenge of mine for this year, and I'm going to record the process & post it on my channel. A friend of mine had it and in watching him play I really wanted to play. Eventually when his mom got him a N64, he sold me his SNES and I started playing, but where he had the guide to help him along, he gave that to someone else. Eventually I got stuck and frustrated, and never picked it back up. One of the reasons I got into SNES Emulation in the late 90's was to play it and others, I did play FF Mystic Quest, but I was distracted by FPS's and never got back around to Secret of Mana. So now that I've been on a console restoration/gameplay kick on my channel, I think it's time to restore one of my SNES consoles and try to pick up a cartridge. I think you're too kind on the English voice acting. All they needed was a director who understood the story, and asked for more than 2 takes. By contrast the last 3 or so Ys games have had phenomenal voice acting, but they are also running on low budgets. Also I'm not buying the excuse that it's "just SNES era dialogue". A decent actor, with a decent director can deliver any line with conviction. Will Smith has built a whole career out of saying bad lines, but with conviction enough for viewers to believe it.
@mylifeingaming

[Try4ce] Oh don't get me wrong - it's pretty bad. Didn't ruin the game for me, but it's definitely the worst part about the whole thing. It definitely seems likely they did not go for an experienced voice director here. However I do think some things could have flowed better if they revised the script a bit - going word for word with dialogue that was never written for voice no doubt makes the whole thing more challenging. The only example off the top of my head where word-for-word game writing from the 90s translated flawlessly into voice years later are the Monkey Island special editions.

No, Sorry fans, but Secret of mana combat was good for the time, but now is garbage, game lags between your attacks, the charge mechanic made battles pointlessly slow, while it allows you to cheese bosses with spellcasting, lack of freedom to aim your weapon. You are just highlighting/exaggerating on the problems of Trials to make Secret look better. Trials was more immersive, the menu was clunky but it didin't get in your way like Secret of Mana could, you had literally 3 ring menus for everything you could use in battle, in Secret you had the basic menu, wquipment menu magic menu then element menu, then Spell menu. Which would make Secret of mana extra clunky when you wanted to use spells and items.

I played the fans translation day 1 when it was done, and remember it way more fondly then sd 2. The bosses are not spell spam and win as in sd2. Some of my favorite bosses in sd3 is the ghost from the ship, and secret rabbit, the pumpkin boss two player, one player would run around while its super tried to hit us and the other would auto it too death and take no damage . I remember the big disappointment I felt when I didn't get to fight the evil clown. In ds3 i was amazed to find out there was a 3rd ending boss that i missed, and replayed it many years later to fight of the ending bosses. Other then the dragon and the early cat boss, most of sd 2 bosses are just ok or forgettable, sd3 wins on bosses and game play and story.

Yeah, the voice acting in Trials of Mana isn't amazing, but it's pretty nice to actually hear what Duran, Angela, Riesz, Hawkeye, Kevin, and Charlotte sound like, with varying degree of quality (lets just say Riesz and Charlotte's normal dialogues are really bad and Kevin sounds like a dummy, but at least their battle dialogues are great). Oh, and if I would pick out which voice actor was the best at their role, it would be Faerie's voice actress. She did an amazing job and seemed like the only one who actually cared.

I'd have preferred simpler animation with text boxes (and no voices) that could be advanced as quickly as you read it. The way it is done, if you advance too soon, it looks awkward.

Square Enix is not to blame, Bandai Namco is not to blame, Capcom is not to blame. NO company is to blame for this, ever since 2010 i've seen the new casuals begging companies for this kind of feature, and these guys are the majority. Time passed and now they try to give voice overs to every character in new games.Even when it doesn't suit the game. This is the results of generation transformers, where things started to become dumbed down for every one to understand, now they expect dumbed down mechanics, tactics and features of literally everything. Voice overs so they don't need to imagine on how a certain character would sound, also as a bonus for not needing to read. Stories that solve the mystery for them, characters that solve puzzles by themselves. Now we even have some lunatics for boss skip buttons and easy modes. AS for the wall fight, it wasn't that obnoxius but it was also irritating in the old one.

Lol I completely disagree. Modern games are infintely more complex. And voice acting gives more fleshed out personality to characters, let alone more concrete intentions and emotions. Dogging on "the casuals" or "the young/dumb people" doesn't help anything, nor is it ever really accurate. Takes a lot more nuance than that

@@hi_tech_reptiles That is simply not true, voice over doesn't flesh out characters any more than a character's actions and general behavior already does, Voice overs paint the character in a "color" that everyone can see, but that color is not necessarily a representative of who the character is, many times you see characters get voices that don't really suit then, even on anime does this happen, and anime HAS to have voice overs. Thing is not everyone is "colorblind", most people can already see the true "color" of a character, without any extra coat of paint to illustrate it. That's what a good story provides it's readers. But people nowadays have been so babied by the medium that they are losing this capacity, they think they need this extra color because they don't know where to look for the color that is already there

Man, whoever said that it was the "best rpg??" XD haha Where I grew up that conversation entirely surrounded Tales of Phantasia, and me and the other kids I knew were constantly putting that up next to Chrono Trigger as the "best rpg of all time." Phantasia was definitely the first fan translation I played. Haven't gone back and played it in a really long time, but that game is for sure why I still have a soft spot for the Tales games. I do remember a lot of hype surrounding Seiken Densetsu 3/Mana games in general, and I wound up buying the Children of Mana game on ds because of that hype, and then being super disappointed when it wound up being super bland and repetitive.

I do not think anyone really said that it is the best RPG EVER or such. That is just nonsense. But it was one of the best Snes RPG's, very much up there with Chrono Trigger and FFVI. Also the branching out storyline depending on your choice of main characters was quite revolutionary, it gives the game a lot of replay value that not all JRPGs have. Chrono Trigger may be an exception because it actually has different endings.

It really was one of the Super NES best RPG though, it had an ongoing story that's easy to follow and provide plenty of customization to discover and master plus 3 different end bosses and story sequence to discovered as well and it had one of the best soundtrack for the Super NES/SFC. The only minor downside was that it only featured 2-Player co-op instead of 3 and not a lot of side-quests.

I haven't played any game in the series, but gave the demo trials of Mana a shot, and it didn't leave a good impression as the combat just felt like nothing had any impact, and ended up skipping the cutscenes (played the switch version of the demo).

I thought Trials of Mana was okay. Voice acting is atrocious, gameplay is alright. Switch version feels sluggish (might be the 30fps, vs 60 on PS4?). I don't think I'll replay it with other characters. Near the end at around Lv 64., 24 hours.

I play the whole game with 3 different files compelte with 3 different teams and with three voice options. First one with English dub which is decent, second one with Japanese dub which is good and third with no voice which is better. I got the Switch version cause I couldn't afford time with the PS4 or PC one.

It’s embarrassing that Square Enix are still releasing these, basically C-tier 90s anime dubs, in 2020. The voice talent/direction is there if you have the money, but apparently they still wanna cheap out for the west for some reason. I’d love to see the bill for English vs Japanese actors, because I wouldn’t be surprised they spent 2-5x more on it in Japan. And it’s almost like there’s this niche of B-tier actors and directors that only does Japanese games that are basically taking these Japanese companies for a ride, making they overpay for awful work. You almost never see these awful dubs in western games anymore. Some Japanese companies seem to have moved away from this, tho, like From, who’s dubs are miles above your usual JRPG fare.

The only fan translation i've ever played through from start to finish is Metal gear 2: Solid snake on an MSX2 emulator in around 2004 or 2005 (before subsistence and HD collection included it). Got the fan tran patch lined up for my PS1 copy of Policenauts to play when my Polymega arrives! :)

@@leecroft7311 The Trials of Mana remakes looks great though, it almost had that big budget looks similar to Dragon Quest XI and that's what I expected. I can't see Trials of Mana been a realistic remake like FFVII Remake cause that's not what a Mana game is suppose to be as the series is suppose to be more colorful and vibrant taking place in a vast fantasy world corrupted by magic whereas Final Fantasy is meant to be dark, realistic, and mysrerious. The Secret of Mana remake however seem like Square Enix just want to rush through. It seems like a quick project where they just re-texture the entire game in 3D which is what that feels like. The Adventure of Mana remake was even worst, it's basically just a mobile game ported to PS Vita, heck it didn't even had a PC port.

the voice acting is super terrible but every time i watch a video about it people always pick the matelo "i'm a ghost" scene which rules and is actually the best line reading of 2020.
@thelastgogeta
4 жыл бұрын
I want to listen to the Japanese one to see where that one went, but I'm certain Matelo is one of the better ones in the game. We already have a dumb filter to make it camp, the character is defined by his ghost obsession up front and all. So it works for me. There is some other dude with the same design who says "Take this and that" which has no good reason to have bad delivery x animation which doesn't work for the scene. Salamando is the one I've seen cited most for poor voice work (I agree) and Charlotte (I disagree, she is mostly consistent across the game and it does have some charm - I do think the first few lines are less well delivered though).

Yes! The Remake was everything that I had hoped for! The Secret Of Mana Remake was a disappointment, especially the cutscenes. 😑 I really want to get my hands on the Remake! For some reason the Switch Version Trailer was shown in 60. The PS4 Version is also 60. Riesz's voice was ruined in the English Dub the most! You can check out my Video "My Response to Riesz's Dub voice from Trials Of Mana (New)". She's my favorite since the original! 😡 The Graphics isn't THAT bad. I was planning to get the game for PS4, unfortunately it wasn't available for pre-order when I decided to. One of my disappointments about the FFVII Remake is that it's not 60 Frames PerSeconds after the PS3 Tech Demo! Even on PS4 Pro it's still not 60 FPS! 😡

Yeah, FFVII remake is loved by critics like the ProJared guy and My Life in Gaming, HappyConsoleGamer and all, but at the end of the day FFVII Remake bombed, due to its shitty ending. Look at the original FFVII sales in Japan, back in 1997. Trials of Mana is a better game with a smaller budget and its sales in Japan illustrate this. The original came out in Japan, by the way, so its existence is no mystery to them. I think critics on KZitem are being paid not to talk really ill of FFVII Remake.

[Try4ce] I'll admit we've struggled to go full steam, and we're still trying to get there. This is side content. They don't perform very well, so we really just do them for ourselves. When it comes to the big episodes, we struggle to reel it in, which makes them extraordinarily daunting and time-consuming. But the huge scale of them seems to be what people like. We're still trying to optimize our workflows so that we can get the big episodes out faster, but it's not easy. You're absolutely right, that content is what makes us us, and we have no intention of stopping doing big tech episodes and documentaries. But those come with immense pressure and expectations too. Stuff like this Ad-Lib episode is just an outlet to enjoy playing some games and making something a bit less stressful sometimes. I'm sorry that we've done a few more of them lately if you aren't enjoying them, but while I'm working on finishing the 5 parts of Analog Frontiers, they do make it easier for us to manage to get content out. The next few episodes Coury is editing are being scripted, so we are continuing to do both styles.
