Mean Gene was one of the main catalysts of that golden era of the wrestling. He was the father figure, he was the neutral voice of the talent, he was a legend. God damn, you know you're getting old when your heroes start being picked off. RIP Gene, never will you be replaced.

Much, much respect and love for the one and only, legendary "Mean" Gene Okerlund!! Where do I even begin...!? Gene is the only "Stick Man" in wresting, as far I'm concerned, that not only held his own with the wrestler that he was interviewing but, actually, quite often, stole the show! He was so charismatic and I loved his facial expressions and sarcastic sense of humor. This man was the personification of class. I used to love, back in the day, when Gene would conduct those localized promos with whoever and I would get all hyped for the show coming to my area. I remember my best friend buying me a "Mean" Gene LJN WWF figure for Christmas in '86 and I would try as hard as I could to imitate that golden voice of his, as I conducted my make believe interviews. I especially enjoyed Mr. Okerlund interviewing Randy Savage and the Iron Sheik. I always thought that it was funny that the Sheik would always refer to "Mean" Gene as "Gene Mean"! Ironically, I binged watch as many "Mean" Gene shoot interviews that I could find, on KZitem, last fall. He was truly one of a kind, irreplaceable. Solomonster, you were very fortunate to have been able to talk with this great man. I'm sure that must've been a very surreal experience. Thank you for so many, many great memories, Mr. Okerlund!! You were such a huge part of my childhood and and you're still a huge part of my life as an adult. You left your mark, people know that you were here and that's what it's all about. Thank you, once again and fly easy, Mr. Okerlund, Sir!!🙏

Last nights Raw “Mean Gene” tribute was fitting. Hogan did a great job with what he added to the experience. I was very pleased with what they did and I could tell it was difficult for Hulk Hogan to do it being so soon after his passing. It couldn’t have gone any better.

Gene was a gem. Got to speak with him briefly this month, last year. When you hear his voice during the Storytime intros, he had an elderly tremble in his voice. And that's when life reminds you he didn't have much longer. As far as tonight goes, no matter how people feel about Hulk, it's not about him... it's about remembering Mean Gene!

The man always enjoyed a "cold beverage". God bless you Mean Gene! Thank you for being a part of my childhood! P.S. - Credit to WWE for the tribute they aired on Raw, it was beautiful!

i started watching wwe in 2009 ! so , i didnt get to watch him in his heyday but in india , we used to get a show named wwe vintage on weekends hosted by mean gene where he used to recap the stories of 80's and 90's ! That's how i got introduced to hogan, savage , jake the snake, stonecold , rock etc. So, i used to wait every week for the vintage episode to get to know about the old stars since we didnt have internet in my house ! I have fond memories of him because that's how i became a wrestling junkie in my childhood. I got tears in my eyes when i was watching the tribute today. I really recommend to watch those 'wwe vintage' episodes.

Unfortunately, there are jackasses on social media who still have a hate boner for Hulk Hogan in spite of the fact that he has to speak on Mean Gene's behalf tonight (who are the same cretins who give me hell over crapping on current day WWE wrestlers, who shall remain nameless). They have forgotten that Hulk Hogan was Mean Gene's bosom pal, and they would think Mean Gene would want Hogan there to honor him. Then again, most of these people weren't even alive when Hulk Hogan and Mean Gene would do segments together eons ago.
@Megared82
5 жыл бұрын
I guess I'm a jackass then, despite being a wrestling fan at the age of 3, in 1985. I was introduced to Mean Gene on "Hulk Hogan's Rock n' Wrestling" and he has been a favorite of mine ever since. Whether or not I choose to watch RAW tonight because of Hogan's appearance is my choice. Do I respect Hogan for bringing over Mean Gene and doing what he did for wrestling in the 80s? On that aspect, yes, but I don't respect Hogan not only his comments but his backstabbing in the later years. I can honor Mean Gene in my own way. On top of that, I haven't watch RAW since mid October and until WWE can do better, not willing to break the cycle.
@merriemelodiesfan7425
5 жыл бұрын
@@Megared82 Whether you want to respect Hogan or not for his derogatory comments and backstabbing as well as watch RAW for Hogan's appearance is beside the point. What I am getting at is that people think that Hogan honoring his bosom buddy (Mean Gene Okerlund) who was probably much closer than anyone, is a political agenda and it's not.

Mark Menning I do get where you’re coming from, and there is certain validity in your concept, albeit its inexactitude. Pro wrestling was assassinated by Vince 35 years ago, when Hogan jumped ship from the AWA to the WWF and Vince’s expansion project began, killing the territories. With their death, Wrestling was killed and sports entertainment was consolidated

It's not that far fetched for Vince to do some greaseball grimey ass shit to use mean Gene's death for ratings or for Hogan seeing as how he has no problem using real life death or sicknesses on TV ie Roman, Paul bearer, Eddie Guerrero. I would have been more receptive of this if it was a surprise at the beginning of the show and not advertised all over the place like it's a match. That just screams to me "ratings grab" . A ten bell salute with ric flair and a surprise appearance by Hogan would have been welcome. But this just screams ratings grab. I'll be right with you crying like a bitch tomorrow and I'll cheer Hogan depending on what he says, but let this be the end of Hogan on raw or smackdown. Well join him in saying Farewell to gene. But I have a feeling that depending on the pop or reaction he gets tomorrow we'll be seeing him way more than need be
