I thank you Mr. Williams for doing this tribute for Doris Akers, she was my great aunt. I know that her music will stay in our hearts forever. I sing in my choir here at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield, Mass. and I plan to bring many songs from her to the choir.

Doris Akers is so woefully underappreciated. What a tremendous artist. She loved the Lord and she showed that in every note and arrangement and utterance in praise of him.
@direfranchement
5 ай бұрын
Yes, underappreciated because she was Black AND a woman. Doris was a gospel triple threat--she could sing, write and play, and she made some very good records in the early years with the Simmon-Akers Singers and the Simmons-Akers Trio. There were a few of them available on KZitem some years ago that had been posted by a fan, but they have been removed for whatever stupid reason. It’s a shame really. Very difficult to find them elsewhere. Doris later moved into the white gospel circuit, and of course her music became more reflective of that audience’s preferences, but she has left a deep legacy. Any Black Baptist church in the 90s sang “You Can’t Beat God’s Giving” while the offering plates were passed around. “Highway to Heaven” and “Lead Me, Guide Me” are gospel staples.

@@jovitahollins8130 She was indeed African American based on the one drop rule, but she could have passed as white more than one of her sisters, I know. When I was a boy in the 60's/70's, the choir of Wingate NC Baptist sang the first verse of Sweet Sweet Spirit every week at the start of service. I loved it then, and I love it now. It was only later through Gospel Legends and the other Gaither videos that I started learning her other songs. I thought I had seen and read everything there was to know about her until today, when I was out to watch her sing and play "Sweet Jesus," which always brings a tear to my eye, I got directed to this recording. Of course, I love all three of those songs, and realize we are the same in our love for Doris, the music, and the Love behind it. Doris was the kind of person who lived and worked among people regardless of the color of their skin or their background. She is surely one of the giants of the faith. Thank you for creating this tribute and posting it here.

@Rob Pinion It's not easy, but my years upon years of digging into the life & works of Doris Akers has been worth every second. Eventually AI will probably allow it all to be indexed and cross-references, but for now KZitem is spineless with regard to "fair use". The most remarkable moments are stumbling on to a 78 disc that some kind, wonderful soul has uploaded. ❤️ to all fans of Doris Akers.

I was also in her Sky Pilot Choir late 50s, early 60s. A 20 year old white boy loving every minute of the experience. To this day, I tear up any time I hear one of her songs. And, I remember a cute little black kid coming in to play piano for our Wednesday rehearsals - 12 year old Billy Preston. He also played the Hammond organ during many of the services. So many rich and rewarding experiences.
