At a time now when fighters have 10 fights and already claim 3 titles, it's hard to imagine a time when people, for various reasons, couldn't win one. Jeannette, Langford, the Gibbons brothers, Billy Patrolle, Joe Choynski and many others are all but forgotten for want of a championship. It's a damn shame. If you bring up the older fighters people sometimes degrade what they accomplished. It's the espn generation and everyone wants to think their time is the best. But please, don't talk Mayweather as the greatest or even close. Someone that ducked fights as long as he could or someone that would and did fight any time, any where, and anyone. To me, their is no comparison.

This makes Royce Gracie and Sakuraba's 95 minute Pride FC fight in 1999 seem tame by comparison. The only thing that needs to be said here is that fighters were much more defensive back then. I would never dream of saying it wasn't tough, but context is important. Tactics of the time were less about scoring. Also, as tough as they both were, modern technique, nutrition, and training were still 100 years away. Boxers today are basically 200 pound heat seeking missiles. Back then, even high level fighters were more like tough construction workers. Plus, humans continue to get bigger and stronger as a species. They both deserve respect, and don't think for a minute I'm casting aspersions on the brutality of this fight. I'm simply saying a good Flyweight today probably hits harder at 112 pounds than two 185 pound men from 1908.

It pains me greatly that few young boxing fans know so little about the great black fighters of the early 1900's. Fighters like Jack Johnson, Joe Jeanette, Sam McVey, Sam Langford, and Harry Wills were the T-Rex of their time. There were some pretty good white fighters that would meet these boxing greats in the ring. Fighters like Fireman Jim Flynn, Bill Lang, Tommy Burns, who gave Jack Johnson a shot at his title and lost to him. There was Stanley Ketchell, the great middleweight of that time. Ketchell met several black fighters, Sam Langford being the top of the bunch. These black greats had to fight each other numerous times because the few white fighters that would fight them were not available. These tough, rugged men were denied, exception to Jack Johnson, never given a chance at the title. They faced down real racism going on in 1900's America and the kicker of all was Jack Johnson, after defeating Tommy Burns, drew the "color line" and refused to meet any of his great contemporaries. He defended his title against some good white fighters, but NEVER against the best. Jack defended against one black fighter (Battling Jim Johnson, who was not on the level with Langford, McVey, Jeanette, or later Wills. Jack drew the color line very wide and deep. He figured these guys were way too dangerous to defend against. Check out these great black boxers ring record on google, and watch your jaw drop wide ass open! The number of fights, the number of black fighters they fought again and again for a better understanding of their toughness, bravery in the face of extreme adversity of the time, this makes their greatness as boxers and men top drawer stuff!

Langford lost to Johnson when he was a middleweight (156) and Jack was one of the top heavyweight contenders in the world. When Johnson won the title in 1908 he reneged on a deal with the National Sporting Club in England to defend against Sam Langford, claiming he could do better fighting in the States. Instead of fighting Langford, Joe Jeannette or Sam McVea he chose middleweight Stan Ketchel, and boxed exhibitions with light heavyweight Philadelphia Jack O'Brien and inept heavyweights Al Kaufman and Tony Ross. It all lead to the fight he really wanted, a 45-round championship fight with washed-up ex-titleholder James J. Jeffries, the Great White Hope. Johnson continued to duck Langford and Jeannette and hired McVea as his sparring partner and general go-fer. In 1913 he finally decided to defend against a black man, contradicting everything he had previously said about the profitability of fighting other blacks, but chose Battling Jim Johnson, a journeyman who had lost to Jeannette, Langford and McVea.

Joe Jeannette, Sam McVey and Sam Langford were all really good fighters as was Peter Jackson that fought a few years before them. Peter Jackson was ducked by Sullivan. He did fight James I. Corbett to a 61 round draw. Jack Johnson had fought Jeannette, McVey and Langford before he became Champion. After he became Champion he was only interested in fighting white fighters because of the money. He wasn't interested in fighting or giving Jeannette, McVey & Langford a title shot because it would be a hard fight and for little money. There was no top 10 or Boxing organizations to force a Champion to fight a top contender. He liked the idea of being the first Black Heavyweight Champion and thumbing his nose at white America. He didn't want to risk giving that up or giving the others that chance. Joe Jeannette and Sam McVey both deserved shots at the title as did Harry Willis years later when Jack Dempsey was Champion.

Sometimes men are afraid to lose what they have. Look at Mayweather afraid to break his undefeated record. Maybe Marciano felt that way too at some point when he retired. Johnson pursued Burns all over the world to get that goddam title, he put a mountain of efforts, once he got it he probably wanted to secure his place in history by not risking losing it 2 months after against a too tough fighter. Thats not courageous but thats human, Johnson was a just a man with his flaws.

Your Mayweather comment is not only petty but a lie. Mayweather wasn't "afraid" to lose, he REFUSED to lose. His record speaks for itself. Look at who he fought, their calibre and where they were ranked. So, stfu. That's like saying Jack Johnson was afraid to fight Jeannette. It's all about circumstances. At least you have the sense to acknowledge that. Hell, Jeannette even threw a fight or two. Lastly, the goal of EVERY fighter is to remain UNDEFEATED. wtf are you talking about? Let's not delude ourselves into thinking that America is the only racist country in 1908. In fact, although leftists don't want to hear this, America was always revered as a place where anyone of any color can thrive. Britain and France may appear better here, but remember, this is at a time when European powers are brutally colonizing large swaths of the globe. Possessions like India and much of Africa are definitely not better for blacks than Montgomery, Alabama. America was universally respected because it wasn't lining hundreds of Indians up against a wall and murdering them, or hacking limbs off Africans who refused to work in mines. America only gets into the colonization game in small ways in places like Hawaii and the Philippines, and often it was put to plebiscite. Were blacks treated horribly in America 1908? Sure, but then almost every minority around the world was too. almost everywhere on earth had institutional racism. Context is important, as is asking, "...compared to what"?
