Where does the friendship between the Russians and the Boers come from? On March 1, 2024, the delegation from the Russian Embassy in South Africa, led by Ambassador Mr. Ilya Rogachev, paid a visit to Utrecht in KwaZulu-Natal. This was to honor the memory of Russian volunteers who participated in the Second Anglo-Boer War.
The rector of the St. Sergius Orthodox Church in Midrand, Daniil Lugovoy, held a liturgy for those who died during the conflict, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Leo Pokrowsky monument as well as the Wall of Remembrance with the names of 90 Russian volunteers.
The event was also attended by representatives of the Old Parsonage Museum and members of the local community. Leo Pokrowsky was one of over 200 Russian volunteers who came to South Africa to assist the Boers in their struggle against British colonial imperialism. He was appointed as commander of one of the Boer guerrilla units and gained fame as a brave officer, for which he was awarded the rank of captain.
Leo Pokrowsky was shot dead in a skirmish on Christmas Day of 1900 while attacking the British garrison in Utrecht. A quarter of a century after his death, his comrades erected a monument to commemorate the Russian officer.
To this day, the Old Parsonage Museum regularly expands its collection, including the placement of new artifacts related to the participation of Russian volunteers in the Second Anglo-Boer War.
