Trichilemmal cyst ( or pilar cyst) is a cyst that forms from skin appendages, hair follicle. The name sebaceous cyst is very often used. This name is improper and the naming is recommended to be done according to the type:
Pilar cyst or trichilemmal cyst
Epidermoid cyst or epidermal inclusion cyst
Very rare we encounter trichilemmal cyst or pilar cyst on the finger.
It is almost exclusively localized on the scalp.
Being localized on the finger will inevitably interfere with daily activities.
The cyst is localized under the skin, it has a hard surface and it’s not painful. It grows slowly and pushes the finger’s elements.
In this video the removal of a trichilemmal cyst (pilar) will be presented.
Trichilemmal cyst (pilar) it is wrapped in a capsule (membrane). Warning! The cyst can get infected if the membrane breaks.
We can also see the cyst’s appearance under microscope magnification. The membrane ( the cyst shell ) is composed of epithelial cells covered by parakeratin.
The mobility of the finger is regained after the excision of the cyst and the hand’s function is fully recovered.
