By rule, this is not "cheating" at all. This is a common play in high school baseball. Most people don't know that a runner's base path is actually never established until a tag attempt on him is made (e.g. there are trick plays of runners running at the pitcher on the mound to confuse him), when a fielder tries to tag a runner/run towards the runner, only then does the runner have the 3ft basepath established, on each side, towards the base he's headed to. However, the umpire can always at any point of the game, call a player out and possibly eject them if they think a player is making a 'travesty of the game', but it's hard to prove intent in most cases and usually the umpire would first issue a warning.

Not all coaches encourage sportsmanship. One LL team I remember used to have one of their players yell "I got it" from the dugout every time a ball was popped up near it, hoping the catcher or infielder looking up would peel off to let the other guy get it. I never saw it work.

A colleague of mine (umpire) had a similar play to that last one, not an intentionally missed base, but a batter who clearly missed first on a run-scoring double with two out. As the pitcher stepped off the rubber to make the appeal throw to first, the runner (batter who had missed) broke for third. The pitcher instinctively threw the ball to third as the runner turned back and dove in to second. The third baseman then threw to first to make the appeal. Appeal denied. Run counts. Appeals must happen before the next play. Throwing the ball to third to get the runner back is a play.

Not sure if you'll get there on vids 3 and 4, but the false "dead ball" situations are also great "trick play" moments. For example, after a ball 4, the defense almost always acts as if there's a dead ball (in youth leagues). I've even see catchers, on multiple occasions, abandon home plate to run out to the pitcher to console/settle him down after the walk. I've had several opposing coaches argue that my runners advanced illegally, because that was ball 4. Ugh. In youth, awareness of the rules and awareness of live ball situations can put many runs on the board.

On that last play, it seems to me that one shouldn't even have to go to 3B and appeal. It wasn't a case of a runner simply running the bases and just slightly missing the bad. The runner blatantly ran OUTSIDE the baselines when he cut the corner at 3B by like 5-10 feet, and should be called out on that basis.

It’s a shame the umpires weren’t using their proper mechanic. As you know, if the field umpire is watching the batter runner then the home plate umpire has the responsibility of watching that runner coming around 3B. However, I don’t blame the umpires. That is just dirty coaching. I am not a pushover or one to complain a lot. Aim both a coach and an umpire so I know how tough each job can be, and I know how much I hate to lose. I have coached at nearly all levels since 1991 and never have I instructed a player to cheat or let them get away with cheating or behavior that brings dishonor to the game. Just the other day I suspended one of my best players from a very close very important game because he struck out, lost his temper with an umpire (didn’t get ejected) then got to the dugout and threw his bat in the dugout. The umpire never ejected him. I even told him what happened and informed him I was suspending that player. Earlier this year I asked an umpire to call one of my players out for leaving a base too early. He was on third base, close game, the umpire wasn’t watching him and he left way too soon after I warned him not to do it. Our local rules allows an umpire to call a runner out for that. The umpire was shocked when I told him what happened and what I asked him to do. But the kids have to learn to play within the rules and do it the best they can. If I saw a player do what was in this video I would have told the umpire and other coach. If they didn’t see it, I would ask that that run be removed and that player be returned to third base. There would be no celebration like in that video because the players know he cheated. And lest you think, “then you obviously don’t win very much”, in just under 400 games as a coach I have more than 300 victories, ten league championships, many second place finishes, only one losing season, several years as an all star coach, six district championships, two national titles, two regional championships and two times World Series coach. I teach baseball the way it’s supposed to be played and I demand a lot from my players as they develop. I have no tolerance for cheating and I require each player to show maximum respect to their teammates, coaches, umpires, and other players. Teaching kids to cheat like that only hurts them in the long run.

We used 3 catchers that game in an eventual loss which knocked us out of contention. San Juan Capistrano vs Mission Viejo, 1978? Could have been a year earlier or later. OMG. LL rules are not baseball rules. They are rec league rules. They are meant to foster leadership and sportsmanship, blah, blah, blah. Baseball rules are meant to learn how the game is played. Not saying these rules are in effect now, but when I worked the LL outfit my association had contracted with a starter could be removed and then put back in the lineup ANY WHERE in the batting order. There were no balks at the level we see from Williamsport every year. If you want to learn how to umpire baseball stay the hell away from LL. Umpire leagues where at a minimum, players at the age of 11-12 are playing with lead offs and balks. I've seen the difference with my own eyes. I coached HS ball at a school that drew it's players from both LL associations and those belonging to PONY baseball where lead offs and stealing, meaning balks were in effect, in tournament play at ages 9-10. The PONY kids were always more polished as freshman. In PONY baseball 13-14 year olds play on a 80 foot diamond, 11-12's play on a 70 foot diamond, 9-10's play on a 60 foot diamond. In LL baseball 11-12's (13 at the World Series) play on the same diamond as 9-10's in PONY. I was an umpire and a coach at the same time for a few years. I coached PONY ball and HS ball. While I was a PONY coach I was given the job of managing the 13 year old all star team. That year LL split it's Senior division into a Junior and Senior division. The Juniors still played on a 90 foot diamond with a 60 foot 6 inch pitching distance. My boys played on an 80 foot diamond with a 54 foot pitching distance. I watched them scrimmage since they literally played on the next field over. Every one of their pitchers had a "hump" in their fastball while mine threw darts. Theirs were lobbing mortars, mine were firing sniper rounds by comparison. I issued a friendly challenge to a practice game to the Junior league manager and he accepted my terms of playing on our 80 foot diamond under OBR. His pitchers suddenly had no hump in their fastballs. My hitters had no problem making contact with pitches that they had seen countless times before. His hitters had all sorts of problems hitting laser beams they had never, ever seen before. The size of the field we were on brought out the best in his kids while mine performed as expected. We won 2-1 in one helluva game. My hope was to awaken someone in that league that there was a better way. It did not work and 30 years later LL still infests the city and PONY went defunct. The LL in question which I will not name actually made it to the LL World Series during one of the scandal years after this. They were actually the best legal team that year and I actually were acquainted with one of the coaches and his son. My best friend was related to them by marriage. I know this is TLDR. Just stay away from fake baseball as an umpire. Any league where at least 11-12 can't lead off or steal is fake.

I've been watching these videos to find "Trick" plays for Fastpitch Softball. And "Fake Bunt" is the ONLY play that can even be attempted via Fastpitch Softball Rules. If the current reader doesn't know... in Fastpitch you are not allowed to take a Lead Off. If your Base Runner is not in contact with a Base until after the Pitcher RELEASES the Ball and the Umpire sees it that Base Runner is OUT!!! So Pick off plays are not needed in Fastpitch Softball. There a few Tricks in Fastpitch Softball that ARE legal in Baseball... but good luck getting any of them to work in Baseball. A good 1 is the "Walk Steal". You Batter is Walked and you have her Sprint to 1st and TURN AND GO straight to 2nd. Just make sure ALL of your Batters Sprint to 1st on all Walks so it doesn't look weird when you spring the "Walk Steal" on them. The reason it can work in Softball and would be nearly impossible in Baseball is the distance between Bases. In Softball it is only 60 feet between bases. In Baseball the distance is 90 feet between bases. So that little bit of surprise needed for the play to work is enough time to get a fast player around to 2nd in Softball. But your player better be THE FLASH to do this in Baseball.

The play is designed to take advantage of the fact that no one is paying attention to 3B. When run legally the play will score two runs or result in a balk almost every time. And by legally I mean the 2B runner touches third. The catcher could appeal it till the cows come home but he will never get the call with a two man crew because on a squeeze play the umpires have other priorities. Their focus is on three players: the pitcher, the catcher, and the batter. The only way this would be caught is with a 3 or 4 man crew. Such a crew would have an umpire stationed in foul ground up the third base line who would see the 2B runner take a shortcut. With a 2 man crew in this situation the base umpire is stationed on the 1B side on a line extended from the plate thru the outer edge of the pitching circle. The reason being that his next close call will likely be at 1B while he has great angles on pickoff plays at 2B and 3B. Coaches know these types of things and will take advantage, sometimes to the point of outright cheating.

This is poor umpire mechanics On a two man crew in this situation the plate umpire is responsible for seeing the plate and third base. The field umpire is watching to make sure the runner touches first. What happens here is the umpires are caught watching the game and where the ball was hit to instead of knowing their responsibilites. This happens far to often on the young kid levels. And honestly its because their are just not enough people to teach true mechanics to those that are new to umpiring.
@dananderson5516

Well, agreed, but a few items of note - the home plate umpire in this case must watch to make sure the bunt is fair/foul, see if there is a play at the plate (as there was also a runner on third coming home), AND be able to see the runner touching third base from second - not sure that is practical. He may be ball watching initially - he should be, he calls fair/foul. THEN, he must both watch a potential play at the plate, the runner coming home touching home plate, AND the runner touching (or not, in this case) third - which would be at about the same time. Just can't put the blame on umpire mechanics on this one - but I do see the likelihood that whoever devised this knew it would be problematic if not impossible for that umpire to see it, which makes it an even lower play IMHO.

@@hometownhobbies103 Agreed that it could have been handled better - but as you have pointed out, each ump already had to watch runners at the two places where it was most likely a play would be made, at roughly the same time the guy would have been rounding third - even if the plate ump pointed, I'm not sure the other would have been able to watch the runner going to first, see the point, interpret it, and look at third in time. And while he could have seen how the play was developing and anticipate maybe there would be no play at first (hard to say as the play on the ball was not on film), he could have only done that if he was watching the play and not his actual area of responsibility. All I'm saying is that I, personally, can't blame the umps too much there. I've umped (only solo, 3, and 4 man crews)/reffed a couple of sports and can't see too much fault there. I do hope that the coaches are reeeeeal proud - because I don't see that as a spur of the moment player-induced play - seems too orchestrated. And if that's the case, honestly, the coaches should be punished - IMHO.

Question for umpires about last clip with baserunner intentionally shortcutting to home, skipping 3B. See at about 5:10 where throw comes to plate as runner is coming home. What if: (i) throw is more accurate and catcher cleanly fields throw and puts tag on runner sliding into home, and (ii) umpire witnessed shortcut at 3B, and (iii) play at plate is clearly safe Can/Should umpire call runner out for missing 3B? • ball is live • runner is tagged • why would this not satisfy the requirement of defense appeal of missed 3B with result of runner being declared out?

The play at the plate and the appeal are two different plays and must be ruled as such. As part of the definition of an appeal "The appealing team must make clear their intention to appeal, either via verbal request or another act that unmistakably indicates its attempt to appeal." Simply tagging him as part of the play at the plate doesn't satisfy the definition. After the dust settles at the plate, the defensive team can tell the umpire "He missed 3rd" and tag him or throw to 3rd and touch the base to satisfy the definition of a proper appeal.

The HS team I coached ran that last play with one difference. The 2B runner actually touched third. When it's done correctly chances are highly likely you will either score two runs or the pitcher will balk. The coach who is running that play in that manner needs to be called onto the mat. He is taking advantage of the fact that both umpires (assuming it's a 2 man crew) are focused on the pitcher and catcher not balking or interfering with the batter's attempt to bunt the ball. When an umpire sees a squeeze play happening his focus narrows. We're looking to make sure the pitcher does not balk or that he steps off properly. We're looking to see if the ball has been pitched or thrown. We're looking to see if the catcher is stepping forward of the plate to receive a throw or interfering with the batter's attempt to bunt a pitch. This coach has no place in the game. He is actively teaching his players to cheat and that it pays off. You had to have gotten this video from somewhere. I hope this coach was turned in. All this being said my HS practiced several trick plays offensively and defensively and we got the right opportunity to use them maybe twice in a season. The worst feeling is recognizing when your opponent is using a trick play you have practiced yourselves, you recognize it instantly as a coach, your brain is screaming "SH******T", your mouth is screaming "BAAAAACK" and your runner is picked off. Our team was very aggressive on the basepaths and forced teams to make plays on us. My own HS coach had a philosophy about aggressive baserunning. In order to make the out the defense must field the ball, make an accurate throw, catch the throw, and make the tag. Screw one of those things up and we get an extra base, maybe more depending on how may runners there are. Our opponent that day took advantage of it in a pivotal league game and took the wind right out of our sails coupled with the fact that their average skill catcher managed to throw out the county's leading base stealer twice while stealing, along with a third runner trying to steal. Those four plays killed three scoring opportunities in the middle innings. We lost and missed the playoffs by one game.

I wouldn't consider that last one cheating. As a Coach it is my job to teach and prepare my players. The 3rd Baseman is not involved so his job is to look at the feet of the baserunner to ensure he touches the base. If an Umpire knows that the fielders are looking at this they are more mindful to pay attention. Whether it's tagging up or plays like this our players must be aware at all times. If they see it, don't panic. Just simply go through the procedure of appealing. As unfair as that play seems I wouldn't call it cheating because the entire object of the game is to score. This is done numerous times by some sort of deception. There is an old saying that goes its not cheating if you don't get caught. Even if the Umpires see it, they are not allowed to say anything. This is no different than the runner missing the bag for real. It's a great play, but our players need to be aware. I've had this done to me and I've done it. I've done other things as well.

I would generally agree with you. Particularly in our local regular season games. However, LL Int has held the position that the pitcher needs to be ready to pitch, or in some act of showing he's starting to pitch, not just standing on the plate with the ball. When that first occurred in 2015, on the old channel that KZitem shut down (because I was not following rules. 😬) the discussion in the comments was very instructive as people at the LLWS event that season participated in why that was allowed. The nice thing for the offense is that the punishment is just returning, not an out (as of 2023...they almost voted to change that rule in 2022.) How you personally interpret the rule is completely acceptable in my opinion. I use the same threshold when umpiring LL locally, but teams just never even try to push the envelope. Great to see you commenting on an OLD video. Thanks!

There's just no way for most 2-man crews to police that type of activity. In a sense, the umpire has to get lucky to even see such a move. It's similar to the 1B obstruction move where first baseman doesn't vacate the inside corner and the batter is digging for 2B ... also wants the inside corner of the bag for a tight turn, collides with the first basemen. Clear obstruction ... seen by nobody.
