Tapping it for a hollow thump can be misleading. It can also be indicative of a dried out melon. The larger the "yellow spot" means that it stayed on the vine longer & had more opportunity to "soak up" natural sugars during it's growth. I've had my watermelon but have been too lazy to cut it up. Thanks for the inspiration. It's sandilla time.🤤💦

Good cantaloupes usually smell like cantaloupe on the outside and sometimes they are more yellowish , or yellowish orange. You can push the tail ,end but you can still get a overripe one. The smell count, by smell you can tell if it's bad also. If it have no smell it's not ripe( not sweet).

i work in produce and my dad works at a farm so this is very accurate, this is how i tell what’s the best of watermelon, cantaloupe and pineapple, Watermelon: the yellow spot means it sat on the fields longer and the brown wrinkle things are sugar lines which means it sweet, also bee stings mean it is amazing Cantaloupe: if the big end is green and mushy that means that it is over ripe and if the big end isn’t plus if it’s not very very firm then it’s ripe the very very firm part means it’s not quite ripe Pineapple: i don’t eat this but i believe if you can easily tear off a top leave then it’s good and ripe! I hope this helps everyone

The yellow part is the part of the melon that touched the ground.. We place a small tile underneath the melon while it is young and then you get a perfect green color around the melon.. The hollow sound means the water is busy drying up inside and definitely ripe.. The little " string" where it was attached to the main plant, should be brown.. 💯🍷

For me I’ve had luck with the tap…also greener ones with a lot of scratches on it. Legend has it the scratches come from animals trying to get to the sugar that they smell. One of the best I’ve had possessed zero yellow marks, but if it’s between one where the mark is whiter vs one that’s yellowish, I’d pick the yellower one because think the whiter spots mean it could be underripe.
