Trio Nr. 7 in C Major for Violin, Cello, and Piano, K. 548
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Eroica Trio
0:00 Allegro
6:47 Andante Cantabile
14:32 Allegro
W. A. Mozart’s 7th piano trio was composed in Vienna, in July of 1788. It was completed only a year after his father’s death, and burdened by his wife Constanze’s illness, which required gave him a shortage of money. At the time, Mozart was in a state of writer’s block, so to speak, despite completing his last three symphonies that year. It was first published in Vienna in the same year by Artaria and Co.
The trio is considered by some to be written for amateurs to perform, in the hopes that Mozart might be able to earn quick money by selling it to street- and café-musicians. His aggressive and even maniacal development sections, accidentals, and modulations of his Köchel 542 trio and 543 symphony make the C major trio seem timid in comparison.
The first movement, marked Allegro, opens like Mozart’s 41st symphony, with a fanfare “call for attention,” unusual for Mozartian, even classical, chamber music, with a very similar chord progression and rhythm as the beginning of Beethoven’s beloved first violin sonata. There are some bravura passages and runs, but it is after all in the key of C major, and the difficulty is slight. The second movement, in F major, is marked Andante Cantabile, and runs spaciously and easily, but not without it’s fair share of Mozart’s unique middle-movement emotion. The theme of last movement, a lively and jovial hunting song in 6/8, is passed around by all three instruments, finishing the trio with a crowd-pleasing dance of sorts, indeed, a money-raiser.
The Eroica quartet, with “technique, temperament, interpretive savvy, good looks and a winning stage presence,” (Herbert Glass, Los Angeles Times), consists of Sara Parkins on the violin, Sara Sant’Ambrogio on the cello, and Erika Nickrenz on the piano.
