Superb mate! When BA gets it right, they do get it right! Don't think it was that difficult a choice to take as much service as possible even if it meant minimal sleep... I thought BA had upgraded the first cabin to suites with a door when they put the club suites on the 777s but perhaps they only did on the -300 versions? Still a pretty good product! That Matt fellow looks great too!!!
@GLAFly

I don't know - I think he looks a bit dodgy! Yeah - I never sleep well on planes anyway - usually too excited and for such a relatively short flight, i wanted to make the best of it in First. The new suites with the doors are only on the 777-300 (which I would have been on if I'd made the previous night's flight), but other than doors and a bigger TV, I don't think there's much of a difference. Wouldn't have swapped it for the world - as you say, when BA get it right, its a thing of beauty!

@@GLAFly The flight took off at 6pm ish? And landed at 6am, so 1am New York time? That's a really tough schedule to get any sleep on - especially if you've come in from the West Coast. I've flown BA in business class a couple of times in the last year (although only as far as JFK) in the Club Suites. Was really concerned that there wouldn't be enough of a difference in the experience between the two, but there really was - especially with the service on this flight, which was absolutely fantastic. It had been about 13 years since i'd last flown with then in First (an Avios Redemption flight), but it was certainly even better than I remembered, and a LOT better than the AA First Class i'd had on the outbound leg from LHR-JFK a few days prior.

It was very good. The food catered from Do & Co was fantastic, with a very nice curry with big portion sizes. Amazing signature BA crew, got offered wine with dinner although I am not of legal drinking age in the UK-but like, I look 18. Also, only two years off, so like, international waters-when in Rome. I also love the 773’s engine sound and comfort, aircraft of choice. Flew them again in world traveller recently, as I flew over to stand in The Queue, was totally worth it, and that product was very good both ways, and I even got the modern new interior on the flight back. Terminal B Galleries lounge is the best btw.

@@gobbledygook5786 I'll certainly be interested to see the food on offer on my upcoming trip, but I'll hedge my bets by having something to eat in the lounge before hand! If you haven't considered it, look at starting from somewhere like Dublin - you will pay less in tax for the avios redemption from there, or you can often get a much cheaper business class ticket by starting in Dublin and upgrading to F using avios (appreciate that "cheap" is a very subjective term)

I remember well using that lounge on a number of occasions back in the day - you know when boarding was announced and you thought to yourself 'Here we go again, lets get on that rocket' and as you moved nearer to the gate so the adrenalin levels climbed. So sad Concorde was retired. Haven't been back to NY since.
@GLAFly

I have to say then that I'm very envious of you (and any others who were fortunate enough to fly Concorde). Sadly, budget for that (or paid First) has always been outwith my reach and I only came to the world of Avios (or BA Miles as they were then) in 2004m so missed the chance to book a redemption flight on the fast plane by a year or so. It's one big regret, and whilst I'm deeply grateful that I have the good fortune to occasionally fly in First with savvy Avios redemptions or UuA from business class, it's the one thing I regret missing out on. Would have made a fantastic Trip Report i'm sure!

Out of interest, has the lounge changed much since the days of Concorde? I'm assuming it's had a refurb along the way (certainly I didn't think any part of it looked like it had been around for 20 years or so).
@maxthelab8457

@@GLAFly Yes it defo looks like it has been refurbished. For a starter the catering 'bank' was all to the right hand side as you walked in, and there was a reasonably sized 'cigar' aka smoke pit there down along the left hand side. Can't remember what the chairs looked like, after all it was almost 20 odd years back now. There was no waiter service as I recall it was all help yourself. But it was still one of the apex lounges for BA in those days - but not as polished as the Concorde Lounge at T4.
@maxthelab8457

@@GLAFly Actually one of our Concorde trips was a redemption! We run our own business and have been amassing Avios ( Air Miles as they were ) for 30+ years and we get enough to go First at least once a year if not twice - although getting seats has now become a tortuous exercise. Back in the day, in the 90's and early 2000's you could secure seats on any flight you wished so long as there were seats open in your chosen cabin, none of this 2 or so seats per cabin per flight B/S BA operate now. With Amex you also get your companion voucher which is a boon. So yeah we have savoured First on BA over about 25 years now on 747's, 777's, 787's, and the A380. We are booked to go down to S.Africa in Nov, again in First, 787 out, A380 back. Just hope things are a bit more stable by then.

@@maxthelab8457 simpler times. Our first redemption was a 241 in 2005 - F on the way out and CW (upstairs on the 747) on the way back (before the taxes and fees were ludicrous like they are now). There were 14 First class on my 777 and the service was awful. Cabin crew not interested mediocre food and no hot food in the JFK CCR due to staff issues. Made me happy with J, especially 3J on an American 777 in the mini cabin at the front. I got a card welcome back as Gold flying to Glasgow so I think it’s when the iPad says to give them out.

Yeah, that certainly sounds like a poor experience. I think for every good experience there is always sadly an example at the other end of the scale. I had a similar experience on a recent club world trip, but my experiences of BA in the past 12 months have fortunately been more of really good crews. As for the gold greeting - if only had these a handful of times. I think all crew have the details on the manifest, but I find its the better crews/inflight managers who go that extra mile. I never expect it but its always welcome.

Issues with entry to Alaska Airlines lounges with a BA card seem to be an ongoing issue. I had the same ‘let me check’ issue in their SFO lounge. Alaska has been in OneWorld for long enough that OW cardholders shouldn’t be a surprise. I’m connecting through Seattle in Sept (where the BA lounge ain’t ‘all that’) and will go to one of the Alaska lounges instead. Let’s see if I’m an exotic ‘surprise’ again.
@GLAFly

I don't think its helped by the fact their own customers don't get access automatically. TBH, not had issues at SFO or LAX with Alaska, but did have an issue with the T5 Admirals Club at LAX last time - because I had an alaska boarding pass, but a BA card - the agent wrongly thought it was an alaska card (despite me showing the physical card). Was one of those "stick to you guns" moments and insisting they checked because I was allowed access. (Got in!)

@@GLAFly most US airlines’ lounge access rules are a convoluted mess so, yeah, I guess you’re right - it’s hardly surprising. Having said that, I got into the joint JAL/AA lounge In Honolulu in April with no issues despite BA cards likely being an even rarer sight there!
@GLAFly

Ooooh - haven't made it to Hawaii yet - it's on the bucket list! I wonder if the HNL lounge was more used to seeing non-US OWE/OWS cards? I think the issue with the Alaska lounges (JFK for me and SFO for you) is that probably 90%+ of their passengers are AS or AA domestic - hence the weird lounge access rules. I'd expect at JFK as well, most travelers would opt for the BA lounges next door, but unlike my experience with AA at LAX T5, the agent was pro-active in checking with her supervisor herself, and at no point said to me "you're not allowed", where as the AA staff were very much the opposite, and if I hadn't been absolutely clear in my own mind that I was 100% entitled to access on my BA card, then I'd likely have left the lounge none the wiser. Does the JAL/AA lounge have some cracking views?
@derekbryce2632
2 жыл бұрын
@@GLAFly JAL/AA lounge in HNL had OK views over a couple of gates. I had a Delta A330 in front of me for the duration. I think in normal circumstances, it would be busier due to the high number of JAL leisure flights pre-Covid. Those'll be slowly recovering. The best views at HNL are to be had in the semi open air walkways between gates, where you get uninterrupted views of the ramp and get to hear all the aviation sounds too. Overall, the airport is looking its age - there's some classic 60s/70s airport design features but overall these have not been well maintained to the extent that parts of it look quite shabby. Strange, because this is a big leisure destination for US, Canadian and Japanese tourists - you'd think they'd make more of an effort. The outdoor Chinese and Japanese garden in the middle is nice though.

You only have to watch Emirates 1st class to see how good the food could be, if I was lucky enough to be able to fly 1st class I think I would opt for a business class ticket and have some extra money left over.

I think the aircraft are still perfectly serviceable when properly maintained at this age, but it is nice to see newer aircraft, like the 777-300; A350 and 787-1000 in the fleet too. Yeah, I wouldn't say BA can match the Miiddle Eastern (or Asian) carriers for First Class offerings (Caviar, Krug, etc), but its still a solid product. Although, unless its an Avios upgrade, I'd always be happy with business class whenever the chance arises. The New Club suites are pretty decent.

I won't agree or disagree with that comment as it depends on context. In terms of service to the US I still think it is enough of a difference, but would agree that the service levels (food etc) fall short when compared to some Asian and Middle Eastern carriers.
