Fabulous aircraft! My husband flew BA TriStars for 9 years and I was lucky in those days to sit in the best jumpseat....virtually on the Captain's left, by the biggest windows. Amazing!

I miss the solid, majestic, macho looks of the L-1011 Tri Star. Since its retirement, there have been no substitutes whatsoever equivalent to these combined qualities in one single airplane.

So proud of my dad who was a test flight instrumentation engineer working on the program in the late 60s, early 70s. He was proud of that plane. This plane and the advancements ushered in Category III auto-pilot landing technology now used throughout the industry. Got to fly on Delta L-1011s and I think 1 TWA L-1011. Loved the "buzzsaw" sound.

The buzzsaw sounds starting at :56 are completely incredible. I'm yet to meet a knowledgable Aviation nut who did not love the TriStar and respect the hell out the engineers who designed this baby. I don't think I fully appreciated the height of the #2 power plant. I don't think I would much care to have the job of checking the edges of the turbine blades or to clean out the birds that may have been ingested. I have a some drawings/photos of the 3-engine Boeing 747 which never left the artist's desks. They just didn't look well, one version had a single engine on the left wing and two on the right, I can't imagine how awkward flying that bird would have been, Lockheed got it right a design that couldn't be improved on.

So sad this great aircraft is not around anymore!! I've always loved the Tristar and happy to say I flew in one too ( when Caledonian had them!). Sadly we'll never have planes like that again!!

We could hear em leaving Laguardia airport before they flew over the Bronx and already knew an L-1011 was about to fly over and rattle our windows till way outta site. Best plane i ever heard.
I rank this aircraft up with the Super Connie, 747, as one of the best and beautiful. I like the DC-10 but much prefer this platform. If I could have flow any period in time, I would time it to fly the Connie, transition to the 707, then the L-1011 and finally the 747. Of course if I were British it would have been my path that led the Concord. Prior to loosing my medical in 07. I flew a lot from Kennedy and LaGuardia usually to Regan. It happened that the last flight of the concord into Kennedy was in 03. We were returning from DCA and ended up right behind the concord for her last Kennedy landing. It was terribly sad. I’ll never forget seeing this beautiful iconic aircraft shutting down for the last time with passengers at. JFK.

I'd flown since early childhood, but my young wife had never flown, even in a light plane. Her first flight was to Maui from SFO with me in 1985 and we booked our trip through a Charter. At the Airport we saw this god-awful bright Purple, L1011 Tristar sitting there. It must have been one of the first ones built and it felt like getting into a 1965 Ford Galaxy. Well, we had a good flight but she had about 4 drinks before her white knuckles returned to their normal color about 900 miles out over the Pacific. She's still a nervous flier, but mention Vegas and she's there!

You must be kidding, an aircraft so advanced that a Wal.Mart greeter could fly it not being safe? It's only when the software goes crazy forcing the pilot to try unsucessfully that trouble begins. Lots of 320's littering the sea bottom in Indochina, South Atlantic and only a miracle saved another 330 with Qantas colors from spoiling their perfect safety record when the software became stuck on the "Let's play rollercoaster" setting. Thank Heavens after 90 minutes they did gain control back from the uncrashable, pilot proff airBUS

These superb aircraft were vastly safer and superior to the death trap DC-10'a that were their rival! They should still be making the new generation L-1012/13/etc today!! I am so glat that the RAF saved a few of these. I was based on the 'Queen of the skies' - VC10 for many years IN THE 70's and 80's and wonder today WHY no one is making rear engine aircraft anymore??? BOAC destroyed the VC10's chanced by buying the rubbish noisy 707's!! Its a no brainer, QUIETER CLEAN WINGS (no engines strapped on destroying airflow) SHORTER TAKE OFF. I worked on the final scrappig of XR809 at Kemble, the RB211 flying test bed. Surely a new rear engine aircraft with ONE superfan each side of the tail would work well? After all 809 used to fly with her 2 Conways running at idle powered by the RB211 *which was so powerful it twisted the airframe!* Thanks for sharing.

What you are describing there, with a turbofan either side of the tail is a BAC. 311. This was the proposed wide bodied successor to the BAC.111. of the late 60s early 70s. Unfortunately this was not built due to the fact that there was a concerted effort to destroy British aircraft manufacturing and industry in general. To follow your question of 'why no rear engine aircraft'? You should ask WHY DOESN'T BRITAIN BUILD AIRLINERS anymore ??? Being a parts supplier doesn't count. A decision was made where production would be done overseas, the US and EU. Secretly the plans for the BAC.311 and the HS.134 were handed over to the Americans. The 134 became the Boing 757 and the 311 eventually evolved into the L.1011. And in Europe, Airbus Industries which seemed to spring up out of nowhere, developed the A.300 a wide bodied twin turbofan, basically a 311. (note the similarity of the number designations)......We was robbed !

At light fuel loads the engines produce enough idle power to accelerate the aircraft on the ground which can make taxiing a bit awkward - having the centre engine so high up means there no danger of FOD ingress if you keep it in reverse, and reduces the forward thrust. Basically, it’s stops you having to brake constantly.

@Penfold101

Reduces the need to brake during taxi, as all three engines at idle with low fuel loads are enough to accelerate it on the ground.

Yang Owen The APU is located underneath and forward of the No. 2 engine, and its mount forms part of the outside skin of the aircraft. Can't figure if its intake is in the ‘S-duct' or on the outside of the aircraft
