Plant Name: Tritoma (Red Hot Poker)

Perennial
Zones: 6-10
Light Exposure: Full Sun
Moisture Requirement: Drought resistant. Water well during dry spells to encourage full blooming potential.
Soil Preference: average soil with good drainage.
Seeds: Drop from plant will self sow once established. Seeds should be cold treated in fridge for 4 weeks to break dormancy
Propagation: Sow outside in late fall or early spring. Start inside 6 weeks before final frost. Can be grown from root cuttings as well.
Planting Depth of Seed: ¼ inch
Planting Space: 12 inches
Plant Height: 3-4 feet tall
Plant Width: 24 inches
Plant Color: green foliage with loom spike that is yellow/orange at bottom to a red top.
Bloom: Spike style. Plants started from seed will bloom during the second year. Blooms early summer. If you start your seeds by February, it is possible that the plant will bloom in late summer.
Care: Mulch to control weeds. Protect in winter if you are in a very cold area with a layer of straw. Cut plant back to the base in the fall. Remove spent flower stalks to encourage more blooms to form. Divide evry 3-5 years for best results.
Where to Grow: Pair red plants with blues and purples for stunning contrast. Use as a back row in a garden to layer in different plant heights.
Unique Characteristics: Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and birds. Deer resistant.
Fun Fact: The Red Hot Poker plant was originally found in Africa.
