I'm restoring a GP Triumph and one of the iconic parts of these pre-war / early 1940s bikes is the novel rear suspension - the sprung hub.
The idea was copied from a Gloucester Gladiator aircraft nose wheel system where the springs and the axle movement took place within the hub of the wheel itself. Triumph's chief engineer liked this idea because it enabled him to build a bike with rear suspension movement but still using the existing rigid frame.
They are heavy, dangerous to assemble and disassemble, and had limited movement and was soon replaced with external coil shocks, however to keep the GP replica as close to the original as possible, we need a sprung hub rear end.
This is the video of the start of the refurbishment.
