I really wish they’d done the Steve mpreg as a phantom pregnancy instead. Like, Aja tells Steve he’s pregnant and he doesn’t question it and starts tricking himself into thinking he has cravings and such while everyone else is trying to convince him that he isn’t actually pregnant. It wouldn’t have fixed all of the issues but it would’ve made it so “haha a man is pregnant” wasn’t the joke (I’m trans and hate mpreg because in most cases I just go “if you want a guy to be pregnant just make him trans”) and instead the joke is “Steve doesn’t understand that humans can’t get pregnant like this because he is a big dumb oaf” But yeah the movie was a whole mess.

The reason they never attempt to address the Arcane Order's grievances is very simple: like with most villains who "have a good point", their motive is never actually the point of the story. The point of the story is to have the good guys fight the bad guys, and giving the bad guys an understandable motivation is just a veneer to make the story seem more nuanced than it is. As you pointed out, a lot of superhero stories do this, but so do a lot of other stories besides (Legend of Korra especially comes to mind). One of the things that made Black Panther so great was that it actually addressed Killmonger's point. He's right that there's a serious problem, he's wrong about how he's trying to solve it, so the heroes don't just stop him, but also find a better way.

I'd argue that Black Panther is just as bad at it as the other examples, since ultimately T'Challa's solution amounts to opening a community center, which have only ever treated the symptoms of society's problems than the actual cause. Killmonger is still a strawman of black revolutionaries who exists to demonize more radical forms of change, like the kind advocated by the actual Black Panther Party of old.

I wasn't overly impressed by 3 Below or Wizards, but honestly I finally lost faith in the storytelling when they decided to turn Jim human again (in a fake-out death!!) The plot of Wizards was already ehhh (I can't say I've ever trusted time-travel as a plot) but then they went and erased Jim's main consequence from the first series. After we didn't even get to see what kind of work he was doing outside of Arcadia with the trolls
@Technofier
2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! So, so, few series actually have characters go through something that profoundly changes them... And have the consequences stick. So when the original Trollhunters series had Jim irreversibly (they even said outright it was irreversible, multiple times) turned into a half-troll, I was quite happy. Then we had the nonsensical mess that was Wizards O.o
@Nurk0m0rath
2 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed 3 Below, and I thought the storytelling in Wizards was okay if taken by itself ... until you factor in the fact that they undo basically every point made in Trollhunters about the period, and it doesn't affect the present at all. And I have to admit, I kind of agree about Jim's return to humanity; it cheapens the whole Trollhunters series. Would've been better IMO to leave him as a full troll, but in control of himself again. So Wizards was a mixed bag IMO. And then there was the Titans. For which, the only good point I can see is that it invites a follow-up series with Jim playing the mysterious mentor character as his friend Toby plays the hero. I absolutely hate how much they backpedal with Steve's character arc. I mean, he's gone from early eighties bully to a relatively well-balanced person who has faced, without proper training weapons or powers, everything from trolls to aliens to gods. And then in Wizards he gets knight training and a real weapon, but he's still pretty useless in a fight, all in the name of comic relief. The least they could have done is let him actually have a full arc and rise to the occasion. He was honestly one of my favorite characters for how far he had to grow. Besides, the whole plot of Titans is "we have to stop these super-wizards from fixing the world." Which just makes everything worse.

Also can we talk about Jim's choice to let Toby be the Trollhunter? Like uhm?! Jim talks about how hard it was to be the Trollhunter time and time again. His relationships and friendships were constantly on the line _and_ he was always a target and was in danger 24/7. Toby may have the mental capacity to handle it better, but physically, he does not. (Not trying to big-shame. But he isn't as great of a fighter as Jim was.) That and we LITERALLY had an episode in the OG series where we get to see what would happen if Jim didn't take the amulet. He also seems to get very hotheaded sometimes and completely lose it. Being horribly reckless. It just makes me so lost why they gave it to him. He also had a running gag about “him being too fat to run” so he wouldn’t even be physically able to be it. He wouldn’t get with any of the trolls because he lacks empathy and leadership. So without jim’s leadership and empathy, the war continues. Nothing will change with toby and honestly it would be worse. I dont know why if they were so committed to time travel, why they couldn’t just have jim go back in time and do things right again since he knows or at least leave the amulet orrr specifically pick someone who actually can wield it or protect it for years so it never gets taken. The whole time travel thing as well makes no sense because the whole time the show was on, they had to shove in our faces how this IS jims destiny. He doesnt get to chose and he doesnt get to leave it. So going back in time would contribute to nothing because the amulet would eventually come back to him. I mean we literally had multiple scenes where jim tried to throw the amulet and it kept showing up. If its his destiny, it will be there until he accepts it. Lazy writing.

The movie did Nari,Skrael and Bellroc wrong; wasting the latter two's potential, leaving them as flat characters instead of properly fleshing them out. Did Bellroc ever love Nari and Skrael? Would they have given up , grief- stricken, upon hearing from Jim of the death of their whole family? Nari's love of, rather than just her fear of, her siblings...we never see it explored. There were only They/ Them pronouns for Bellroc pre-movie;after Jim once calls them " she" , THEN the Wiki changed. If anyone called Raine Whispers " he", they'd remain they, why should redhead suddenly and mysteriously update pronouns. It was hinted at in Wizards, that Skrael and Nari loved each other,but Skrael does a 180 and tortures Nari along with Douxie, then attacks and impales her, which does not line up with his implied fondness for her from previous interactions. Bellroc displays only a moment of possible affection, patting Nari's shoulder and hair ever so subtly and briefly in the roundhouse. Is this proof that they cared, or is it just more nothing like the Nari- Skrael bits in " Battle Royale" and on the train?? Canonically, there was really no chance Bellroc could or would be redeemed. However, Skrael stood a chance for Nari's sake, and he should have gotten, and then taken, that chance; assuming that he truly loved her, of course. Bellroc was vaguely nice to Jim at the end, it would have been awesome for him to redeem them through sympathy . BTW: Where on Earth was Zoe Ashildr, where was Zouxie?!

@@petergriffin-tu6ug The version I came up with is that Jim did, in fact, go back in time... buuuut, instead of the bullshit ending we got, he was able to use everything he learned to prevent the worst of the tragedies. The time map from the Wizards series came into play, and he actually found something that worked for everybody involved; he was able to speak with Skrael and Bellroc, and show them the good side of humanity; and that people can learn and change. Since Nari was one of them, she was able to help talk sense into them both, and they found a way to refresh things without loss of life, to bring magic back to its former glory without killing everybody and everything. Magical creatures came flooding back and Earth was returned to what it once was with the Arcane Order working together as a unit. A part of a balance as they were always meant to be. This also restored the Heartstone, allowing the trolls to come back home. Arcadia became an epicenter for magic, and Jim was able to return to a normal life, with his friends, family and loved ones. All of them able to live peacefully and happily. Also, Jim kept his Troll form AND his monster troll form, but was able to shapeshift at will, more like a Changeling. I might one day do a Fan Edit of the entire TOA franchise, including the movie, and one of major changes is that I’d do the whole Creeper Sun poison thing with Draal instead of AAARRRRGGGHHH, with him becoming increasingly scared of his impending death, to a point where he completely shuts down and refuses to do anything, until Jim and the others step in to help him through his fears, and encouraging him to spend his final days happily, ultimately snapping him out of his funk and giving him the courage to sacrifice himself in the season finale, in any way that helps the group, along with showing them coping with the grief of loosing him, but still giving each other support and comfort. Then, Draal’s spirit returns to help save Jim from the Darklands in season 2, revealing that he earned a place among the previous Trollhunters and will still give him advice when he needs it, and when season 3 rolls around he and the Trollhunter spirits play more of a minor role, but he’d still help, having his spirit distract Morgana from killing his friends when they’re restrained by her magic, but when the final battle is over, they have to permanently go back to the afterlife, with Draal giving a heartfelt goodbye to his friends, telling Jim that he’s proud of him, before fading away.

I don't even understand how Steve could get pregnant in this fictional logic. He's a human male...not and Akiridion-5 male. His genetics work differently from Aja's species. Same from the other p.o.v: Aja is not a human female, and apparently Akiridion females don't reproduce the same way as human ones. That means that in their universe they would've had to adopt a child, because neither Aja nor Steve had the genetically opposing reproductive system for either one of them to birth. So what the disgusting hell?

Bellroc and Skrael aren’t defending the planet. They’re motivations are very selfish. They may have started out defending magical creatures when the bad king was taking over. But it was very short lived. They were on the side of the bad trolls. Bellroc even tried to kill the first trollhunter.

I didn't even know that there was a Trollhunters movie until now, and I wish i was still living in that bliss after seeing in your review how awful it was lol! I really liked Trollhunters, and 3Below was pretty good, Wizards was meh(I still hate that they turned Jim human again!), and this movie just sounds awful! Also, I like the Arcane Order's character designs, which just makes me hate how they were treated even more!

For me i loved all the shows and how they connected with eachother. Troll hunters is my childhood and I had such a big phase when I was younger I love it sm. For 3below i love sci-fi, fell in love with Krel, and I absolutely love how much of a family Varvatos, Aja, and Krel are. I also love staja SO MUCH OMG. For wizards, i LOVE Douxie and I’m in love with him too. I loved the whole idea of the time travel at first and the backstories of everything but I just wished they made wizards longer and did more with it. And the movie is trash

Male pregnancy is a wacky surreal way to up the typical jokes about pregnancy... assuming male pregnancy is just a crazy fantasy. Doesn't really work when male pregnancy is actually real, though. Its not a fantasy. Actually makes me curious to re-watch an episode of a 90's to early 00's Australian kids show I watched growing up, 'Round The Twist' - where a teenage male character is accidentally impregnated with a tree-baby after pissing on a magical tree, and gives birth through his mouth. Was a funny episode when I didn't know about trans people. I wonder how it holds up...?
@TheOcelotSlayer
2 жыл бұрын
Male pregnancy isn't a real thing... "Transmen" are still biologically female. Their social conceptualized identity is not an exception or the rule. Definition of male: "of or denoting the sex that produces small, typically motile gametes, especially spermatozoa, with which a female may be fertilized or inseminated to produce offspring." Definition of female: "of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes."

I honestly never heard of this show before but I can understand your guys pain, growing up there was a little cartoon called godzilla the series which was a tie into the 1998 godzilla film that was a great show, but suffered from the Pokémon & Digimon wars going on that the time, its normal schedule times were inconsistent and the studio basically left it to die because they failed to market the series I think due to the movies backlash. At the end of the day here my take way from the whole situation, be thankful for the good times the show has given you and don't think too much about the bad moments, use this as inspiration to create your own ideas and make the Endings you always wanted for the next generation after you, always dare to be adventurous.

I personally missed in ROTT and Trollhunters: -Theological view on the Arcane Order something like Dead Space Downfall with false religion trying to wiping humanity which would go with pagan gods -A subplot with counter-terrorism unit or goverment's interest in occultism overall, something like Resident Evil or Love, Death & Robots -Man, more stuff from the European mythology like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Trollhunters could have lore equaling to Neil Gaiman's Sandman's if Christianity and mythology handled right -Why would the teens just stop at fighting supernatural stuff, seeing the gore of the book Trollhunters could equal to disturbing movies, I'd like to see the teens fighting real life crime as well -More focus on the personal life of characters considering how harsh their growing up was and showing real life situations -I want more of Douxie's probably tragic backstory, the man reminds me of Billy Pilgrim from Slaugtherhouse 5 considering he's 900 years old. -More focus on the secret sociéte's subplot -Definitely add monster hunters I love Tales of Arcadia, I loved it because I related to Jim and many other characters, and because it gave me Bayformers and Ratchet & Clank vibes. Otherwise the show overall gave X-Files vibes and showed a false flag just like X-Files themselves did. Love the franchise still though. I'm pretty sure they made ROTT end with restart of the series just to not bother with making another sequel

The series had its ups and downs but I liked it. The movie was so bad plot-wise that I'm tempted to rewrite a fanfic of how it should've ended. One where my favorite characters Nari and Skrael live. Also I don't want to sound rude but wasn't the point of Tobi being around for comedy? Every time he was around there was a joke about him being a short obese kid. He wouldn't make a good trollhunter especially with the rushed training he'd have to go through. Another point, Jim telling his teacher to meet his mom early on while he was still a villain at that time seems stupid on Jim's part. Last complaint for now, where did those babies come out of?? And it's a shame they only got to live for a few minutes before the time travel scene

I haven’t seen the entirety of wizards so I might be wrong on this but I just felt like they didn’t have enough episodes to tell the story they wanted to and instead of like having subtlety somethings it was just like a brick to the head like the moment where we find out that Guinevere was killed like they hinted at it in like the first episode I believe and then I think three minutes later they immediately confirmed it which didn’t make sense and then we immediately saw Morgana “killed” when we didn’t No this version of her lol also Steve didn’t do much and I don’t know the whole thing felt very rushed and I tied a bow on it if I’m correct that’s what I gathered from the wiki which they shouldn’t have done that all they should have lost at the end of wizards and then rise of the titans is them all coming together and fighting the Titans and wrapping everything up. Which is the movie kind of did but it did it in a way that was incredibly stupid like why were the trolls sent to fight in broad daylight and why was Strickland sent to fight in a place where he could not fly, it all didn’t make much sense and then the ending of course was very much a copout. So yeah I thought like if you’re going to fix Titans you might have to fix wizards as well but like I said I could be wrong on that since I haven’t seen the entirety of it because I just felt like they didn’t have enough time for the story and we’re rushing through everything. Also does anyone know why the movie started with an introduction of everything? Like why not just put in the description that this was the final installment of the troll hunter series so like if someone stumbled upon this they would know this is the final istalment of a series and they should probably watch the other stuff or do they just think no one was gonna watch wizards so that’s why they felt they had to sum up everything that happened in that series? The whole portion just adds a weird start to everything when they had a perfectly good way to start the movie with the subway scene.

put this in a reply somewhere but i feel like the mpreg thing would have went way better if the whole seventh kiss thing was just the tarron siblings' parents' version of "oh when two people love each other very much the stork brings them a baby :3" and no one's informed enough to know or say otherwise so everyone just *thinks* that steve is pregnant either that or (preferably) just scrap it for a creepslayerz subplot (seriously how the fuck did steve and eli have like two scenes together total)
@Radhaun

honestly, I *never* liked Steve. I don't like mpreg either, so the mpreg bit was just something I kind of ignored because I always try to ignore Steve when he's on screen. I definitely agree with your additions, but if they had totally dropped Steve from the story or just let him stay the boring bully from season 1 and not made him a prominent character, that would have been so much better. I didn't actually realize this was a movie? I had it in my head as a final season.... which doesn't really say good things for the pacing. the only bonus I could say with how they ended the time travel (Which I definitely thought was left open so they could keep going), is that he actually made a real change to his past. it's still a sloppy write, and the end is pretty dissatisfying. the only thing I like about the villains is their characterization and their designs. but I hate everything they did with them (and I don't feel like they were made powerful enough given what they were).
