PLEASE NOTE: This video is several years old. I leave these videos up from my freshman year of high school because it's silly to try to delete the evidence of their existence and as a humbling reminder that we all have to start somewhere. Please understand that the person in this video is not the player I am today or strive to be in the future. If you would like to hear what I sound like now, check out some more current videos on the channel. Thank you.
I'd like to correct some mistakes. The 5G is definitely not a starter mouthpiece, it's just the one I started on. The 12C is most certainly the choice of many beginner trombonists. The 5G is a very open, deep-cupped, wide-rimmed mouthpiece, on the larger side for tenor mouthpieces, though it has a small shank. It is substantially larger than the 12C, which is often used as an jazz tenor and occasionally an alto trombone mouthpiece. Its sound is bright and piercing, thanks to its shallow cup and small diameter, but at the potential cost of your low register. Make sure to try as many mouthpieces as you can before you make your decision.
