I absolutely love stories like this. I learnt alot from the old man too and have alot of which to be truly grateful for.. He owned a really big shop (M&G engineering) which was in the old yatch building sheds on the waterfront in Auckland NZ. He built and maintained alot of race cars, was a Ford man through and through and taught me so much. I used to think it a chore at the time being told to be so precise, like I was triple checking everything only to be watched over and told to be sure, to the point I eventually left working for him to go into working for a mate of his in panel and paint, another old school perfectionist from whom I'd very soon learnt I'd traded one extreme for another🤣.. My first car was an old grey XE esp 351 4spd, my old man and I had built up together, I really miss that car and the old man, even though both were old, grumpy, shaked, didn't like cold mornings and drank alot🤣🤣😢😭 If he could see me now, he'd be bagging the sh!t out of me lol. For living in Australia and own a bunch of cars he'd told me not to. "Son, if you buy japanese steer clear of the two M's" (Mazda/Mitsubishi) check a couple of the toys I have on my channel🤦♂️🤣.

Its amazing, I used to have the old videos from the late 80s and early 90s with Chic Henry hosting and Gary Myers in the Mustang winning the burnouts and good ole go-to-whoa and personal favourite spear-a-spud. There was even the official Summernats theme ... Cruisin on the street / draggin on the track / only at the summernats / and thats that .. lol , I think in those days you had to participate in the driving events to be considered for grand champion, dont know when they dropped that, maybe thats a good or bad thing? Really though, looking back even the top 5 from any of those years wouldnt have rated a mention in the 2020 top 60 hall, thats how much the sport has changed. Whats your favourite street machine featured car from pre - 2000? I would have to say mine is Darryl McBeth's orange FJ Holden from 1995 (Street Machine of the Year winner)
