There are a lot of different types and flavours of guava of course. A lot are very overrated in my opinion but some are nice. Actually tinned guavas are best haha. They’ll never fruit here without a heated greenhouse so I’m really just growing a few for the challenge lol 😂

Hope you get the fruits! I think I have one at the back garden, it hasnt given fruits so far and before I didn’t know what tree it was so I cut it very short i Now it grows big again, I’ll try to give fertiliser and see if the fruits will come 😂

Unfortunately it will never fruit here because of our long winters but I might get flowers one day which would be exciting. I’ve had guavas flower before but the fruits never hold 😂

Looking good. Ive grown tropical guava from seed a couple of times & they do flower in the uk with fragrant white flowers. Im in Yorkshire & do have a greenhouse.However mine died after a few years I did overwinter them inside but its still a struggle to keep them going for more than a few years. Hopefully you will do better with your variety. A good challenge anyway!

I have quite a few varieties of tropical guava and some have flowered but of course they flower in the Autumn then don’t hold the fruit over winter 🤪

To get them to flower is still very satisfying. My tropical ( Egyptian) guavas always flowered in the summer e.g. July & I did hand pollinate them but they still dropped off! Perhaps it was a pollination issue as It was hot at the time so the weathee wasnt an issue.Chilean guavas ( psidium littorale) are very good though even without a greenhouse they cropped well for me. I just brought them in over winter & kept them in a cool place by the window in a basement.

I meant Psidium cattleyanum , not littorale , the one that cropped well for me

Yes I get fruit from my red and yellow strawberry guavas, they are certainly easier

Great recovery on the Bangkok giant guava Brett. Those multiple shoots at the base, do you think if you pulled one up it would it root?
@lyonheart84
Ай бұрын
At the moment the lower shoots seem to be coming straight from the trunk just below ground level. Currently I think they’d be too young to form their own roots but I’m thinking if they are left long enough they might form roots as well and could then be removed 🤞

Nice to see it recovering, Brett! My guava doesn't seem to have done much yet since I moved it into the greenhouse 🙄 The other day I asked Vivero La Cosma about the white sapotes they have, as they featured some on a social media site beginning with I. They currently have 3 varieties but of course, Canarius aren't bothering to get any from them 🙄. I also asked if they would ship overseas, but they said they couldn't ship them outside the Canary Islands.

Yes I didn’t think they would be bothered with the hassle of export. Canarius are geared up for export and getting the phyto certificates. I’m afraid you’ll have to go on vacation to the Canaries and take a full size suitcase with you 😂. Funnily enough despite the cold, all of my guavas are outside and putting out new growth albeit very slowly.

@@PeterEntwistle I hope to be picking some White Sapotes towards the end of September, Peter. I'm visiting 2 nurseries that sell the 'McDill' and 'Vernon'. I can try and grab you something. I'm also selling one of my McDill's but I'm afraid this specimen will be going for silly money because since I filmed it last it has pushed out new growth, flower buds and set fruit ... It's also only suitable for local pickup.

@@PeterEntwistle If you do decide to go away soon though, I totally recommend the North of Italy where I'll be going. Cheap accomodation, great food, excellent weather, beautiful scenery and lots of plant nurseries. *Incidentally, do you know the varieties 'Vivero La Cosma ' are stocking?

@@MoebiusUK Thanks, Dom I appreciate that. I find the white sapotes very fascinating. I would be more than happy to pay for scions too, if you ever have to do some trimming on. Although my seedling plants might not quite be ready for grafting just yet though, but they are starting to grow quite fast now.
