Only a day after becoming a named storm, Ophelia is now making landfall on Emerald Isle in North Carolina, with winds near hurricane force and a storm surge of up to six feet expected. The storm is at its peak, with winds spreading out towards the northeast nearly 300 miles, and weakening is now expected to occur in earnest as Ophelia moves inland.
Along with wind and surge, a further 6 inches of rain are possible in the Greenville area, and up to five inches along the I-95 corridor towards Virginia and south of Richmond. The wettest areas are expected to be near the center and western side of the storm, rather than the east which is typically the case.
Ophelia will die off quickly despite its size, and any lingering remnants will be dragged back out over water early next week and towards Bermuda.
