His wife has 1 year left of residency and he's going to Detroit for 2 years. Let's be real and I say this as a Rangers fan who has watched his entire tenure here: He fleeced this team with his $56 million dollar contract. He got generational wealth from Jeff Gorton and you're telling me he can't stay away from his wife for 1 year? This isn't even factoring in his horrific play on ice. He got a NTC, captaincy, and is playing for an organization that is notorious for giving out bad contracts and playing them out until it's way too late. Despite all that, he's still being outted by Drury. Does that not demonstrate how bad he is as a player? He's being paid 8 million dollars to be the worst d-man on the team and I'd say our 7th d-guy is even better than him. There are plenty of worse situations he could be in. Good for him for thinking about his wife, but his entire stay here has only set back the team. His contract is part of the reason why this team never resigned Buch, and 3-4 years later, this team is STILL looking for a RW to replace him. If a worker doesn't do his work and constantly pushes back the team because of his incompetency, the company has the right to fire said worker regardless of their personal situation. Don't even get me started with how most of our postseason runs ended because of him.

The problem was the Rangers went to him before the draft and said they had two trades worked out for him, one to Toronto the other to Detroit. They couldn’t trade him until noon on July 1st after he submitted his 15 team list. Not wanting to go he placed those two teams on his list therefore cancelling any deals in place. I understand him wanting to stay to be with his wife, but as a pro athlete when your NMC expires you have no choice but to go where they send you. There is more to this story than what we have read on the surface. I’m sure he’ll be either traded to a team close by ( Isles, Devils) so he can stay at home, or depending on how things go work it out to play one last year with the Rangers then move on. I have zero issue with him enforcing his no trade clause. Although it is a little ridiculous trying to stop any trade if he has a limited no trade clause. In all honesty depending on what teams are on his list, he would be better off accepting a trade to a team like Detroit where number 1 they wanted him & number 2 is geographically not that far from NY. As someone who works in a hospital and is familiar with what exactly is involved in a residency program you really don't have much time for a personal life. So I can understand him wanting to maximize the time he does have with his wife. Although there is a giant flaw in that logic when it comes to blocking a trade. First if they trade him to a west coast team it becomes way harder to spend time with each other on either person's off day. Second this is the offseason for the NHL, and depending on what type of Residency she is involved in it should come to end around the end of the next regular season to start of the Finals. So really your only talking about 6-7 months not a full year of managing how you spend time together. Third once the regular season starts his time is dictated by the NHL schedule. I am sure her residency program is not going to bend over backwards to accommodate & coordinate with his playing schedule so control over that isn't going to change regardless of the team he is on. Fourth this relates directly to Detroit their ownership is dedicated to taking care of their players, so I would hope he would have at least been receptive to hearing what they have to say. He might be surprised to find how the ownership has deep ties & relationships with the medical community. Plus Michigan has more top 500 hospitals than NY .

There's also a chance that these rumors came out and other players spoke up not wanting him to be traded either. Trouba signed this contract before Covid and before his wife got pregnant. Both of those things could have caused the delay in her residency finishing and who could have known about the impending global pandemic then. Part of why we got him in the first place was because he wanted to move to the states in part so his wife could do this. Where better than NYC could she have done it? It has some of the best medical centers in the world. We probably got a better deal from Winnipeg than we should have because of NYC being a draw and he used his leverage to get here. I don’t blame him for trying to use his leverage now to stay. The only way I’d blame him is if he refuses to go to the other 16 teams. The same way you couldn’t have predicted Covid is the same reason you have to go if a trade happens. Life is full of unexpected things. 6-9 months of long distance where half your games were already going to be on the road anyway is not the end of the world in an 80ish year life span. The only other way I can see this being palatable for both parties with him staying is for him to “not recover well” from the broken ankle he was supposedly playing on at the end of the year and go on LTIR. Rangers get the cap space they are desperate for and he doesn’t have to leave for a year.

There is the other issue though that has been rumored, which is if Trouba actually says I will not report to a team you trade me to, the Rangers will waive him and have him in the minors to begin the season which I feel like if it comes to that we enter the potential of them exercising a contract termination but we shall see.

THIS IS JUST RUMOURSPEAK, WE DON'T KNOW IF THIS HAS HAPPENED The issue is, that he's effectively turning his 15 team M-NTC to a full NTC by putting it out there that he won't report if he's traded (or claimed on waivers). AGAIN, THIS IS JUST RUMOURSPEAK, WE DON'T KNOW IF THIS HAS HAPPENED If this is the case, then the NYR have every right to pursue their options, which include sending him to minors. Not interested in an NHL trade? Go play for Hartford then. If he fails to report there, he will get suspended. It's a shitty situation all around, and I get where Trouba is coming from. This fucks up his family situation big time. On the other hand, this is the NHL and the New York Rangers. And this team wants to do everything they can to win the Cup. Trouba is not part of that equation.

Whether by staying in NY or giving her more clients/patients via illegal headshots.. wonder if she is a ENT. ;p For me.. it's NY for signing him for that much and making him captain and giving him all those trade cause. Hoping habs GM Gorton isn't interested in trading him since he did bring Trouba to the Rangers if Montreal isnt on the No trade list. Montreal is somewhat closer to NY than Detroit is but he is too rich for my blood and we have our Arby and Mal to do the rough stuff legally.

If Trouba had a fractured ankle in the beginning of the 23-2024 season, why didn't the Rangers shelve him? Chris Drury has his work cut out for him and the best bet is for Chris to bring Othman, Edstrom and Zach Jones up and see if they gel.

Trouba is being out of line if he refuses to report to a team that isn’t on his NTC. The Rangers have no obligation to cater to Trouba’s wife. He has played poorly the last 3 years and has not earned his contract. Every player in the league deals with inconveniences when being dealt. Trouba is just being a child and holding the Rangers hostage. If I’m Drury, I’d pull a Goodrow maneuver and let Anaheim claim him on waivers. It’s all legal in the contractual language.

It’s quite concerning how much of the NYR fanbase is getting blinded by the notion that “Trouba is the reason they didn’t win the cup”- sure they lost in ECF, which btw were mostly tight games, but that also means he captained them to that point. He’s blocking and hitting a crazy amount, he’s a warrior and leader, one of the anchors of the team. He’s not a 8mil/yr player, and I understand why the team wants to trade him, but the amount of personal hate against Trouba, who’s just exercising his rights for valid reasons, is way too much.

Players earn the right to sign any contract in UFA status. If a team signs with a NTC, M-NTC then that's the team's choice and the player signed off on it. Just because a team says they want to trade you, you have the right to exercise the NTC or M-NTC, it's in the contract. Players are expected to play out their contracts, it should be fair...it's not but it's supposed to be.

It's fine that Trouba didn't come to Detroit. We only want players that want to be here anyway. He made the choice based on his family, which others have also done. It wasn't a big loss for Detroit, except maybe Ghost would have tried to be kept, because if he is an $8 mil 3rd pairing, that's def a horrible contract and I don't feel he really fit the mentality that Detroit is building.
@Monster-o1q

Sounds like he cares more about his wife's career than his, which is perfectly fine. In that case he should quit hockey of be expelled from hockey until his wife graduates school and he should be perfectly happy about that choice. It's a red flag if I ever saw one. Thank God Detroit didn't receive him. Hopefully she supports him in his old age.

I'm not convinced a lot of what has been published is true. NYR are usually one of the much more guarded teams in the league when it comes to genuine leaks. I don't doubt that they want Trouba's cap hit reduced or off the books but when he's fit he still has a lot to give this team and he only has 2 seasons left. Besides, after seeing some of the deals handed out on the 1st I'm happy the Rangers didn't have cap to eat in to because some of the deals are nuts! Montour, Skjei and Tanev, as examples, all feel like those deals will not agree well and Skjei in particular is not a $7m D man.

If he really wants to stick around the New York area because of his wife's job and if the Rangers really do want to dump his contract, maybe he can be dealt to either the Devils or the Islanders. He would still be close by to help support his wife during her residency and he would be adding defensive depth to either team and would help them qualify for the playoffs and possibly the Stanley Cup. Not sure if that's a possibility but it's just a thought.
