I was fixing a fridge one night we have 240v in Australia at the plug. The customer knew me well and popped out to the shops leaving me with the kids(not in the job contract). Suddenly the lights went dim however the TV stayed on? So the owner returns what have you done? Only my electrical knowledge saved me from an angry customer. One phase of the 240v had gone out. Turns out a car had crashed into a power pole killing one phase. Being a switched mode power supply the TV switched to 110v I was just glad the lighting circuit in the roof was not on fire. You need to understand the voltages of single, 2phase, and 3phase, and never disconnect the earth circuit to fix a fault I have seen it done before by an idiot.

In America 240 VAC single phase is mainly used for residential homes. At first there was no separate ground for our stoves and dryers. the neutral was connected to the 120VAC loads but also was connected to appliance ground. When there is a neutral issue like the dryer in the lecture this defiantly leaves an issue with potential shock hazard with the cabinet. For testing purposes we jumped Neutral back to ground to confirm the issue and see if the motor was operating. It was not intended to be left that way for repair. Now code has changed and require a 4 wire outlet which contains a separate neutral and ground.

@@riz65 Don't worry I realised you were testing. You're an excellent teacher.
