I’m here trying to troubleshoot why my neighbor’s Pentair heater is giving off over 2000 ppms of Carbon Monoxide. The gas company red tagged it for safety. It’s still heating the water but the CO2 seems to be a problem. Any ideas?

I don't know why you get a like/dislike ratio like that. Everything you did is correct and ends up being like 80% of why heaters aren't working... Guess some folk just don't appreciate being told reality.

Nice video. I looked but didn't see that you ever did a video on checking gas flow at the meter. In my opinion 90% of the problems with this heater can be attributed to not enough gas flow, Usually caused by improperly plumbed gas supply lines but sometimes it's a bad gas valve or they installed the wrong size orfice in the heater. Easiest way to check that is to watch the gas meter as you did at the very end of the video. Proper gas flow 6.6 cubic feet of gas per minute. 400,000 BTUs delivered per hour divided by 1000 BTUs per cubic foot of gas = 400 cubic feet per hour, divided by 60 minutes in an hour = 6.67 cubic feet per minute.

Glad I found this! I have the same heater, Mastertemp 400. Something just happened with it. Now when I turn it on it'll cycle through the lights and get going, we get that big whoomph of the gas igniting.. then something clatters inside, it's decently loud. Once that goes for about 2 seconds the thing shuts itself down and then tries to go through the cycle again after 20 seconds... keeps repeating the same process.. Without really knowing anything about it I'd get there's some kind of belt in there that snapped? Must spin a fan or blower? Not sure.. hopefully you can point me in the right direction and if it's an easy replacement I could do it myself? Thx! - Dave

That clatter inside is a broken manifold bypass valve. $15 fix. I have a video on my channel about it: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1qOsqpaYopl1m3Y

Having similar issues but it now is showing service heater with no error code. Any thoughts? When it was on I was not getting the natural gas smelling hot error. It was working earlier and it shut off. It’s on and off.

My mastertemp stays on for about 10 minutes until the Service light comes on. I notice LE011 was lit so I replaced the thermistor. This did not fix the issue so I replaced the high temp switch. Both relatively easy installs and and cheap replacement parts. But the LE011 still turns on. I reset the heater and it starts again for about 5 minutes.

LED11 is just your service heater light that you can see from the back side. If there's no other light on the board, you need to check the igniter and ohm it out. 45-75 is the range for 'good' on those. If the igniter is good, check your gas - make sure it is on both at the cut off by the heater and at the meter. Failure to ignite can be caused by improper gas flow, bad igniter, bad ICM, or some mix thereof. Depending on the age of the unit, and whether or not the gas has been proper the entire time, potentially there could be soot clogging up the flame holder. Lots of little things to check. If the service heater light is the only one you have on the back of the board that's on, gotta start from scratch and determine if it is an obvious physical reason before moving on to determine anything that just might not be showing.
