Upstate New York stocks numerous streams and rivers every spring with rainbow, brown and the occasional brook trout. Many of these fish survive the winter and adopt wild characteristics, making them a challenge to target sometimes. Fall colors in upstate New York are breathtaking and add a heavenly vibe to every fishing adventure. The majority of the trout fishing in this area is fly fishing, which is a fairly new concept to me. However, since fishing several times a week, I have begun to develop some of the basic skills to actually catch fish using this technique. The concept of using different styles for different flies is still foreign to me, so I tend to use mostly streamers, as they are the most similar to conventional fishing.
On this adventure, I am fishing a local state park that frequently gets hikers and sightseers but general is not fished too heavily. The presence of lots of people, however, does tend to make the fish pretty skittish especially in the middle of the day. I enjoy fishing this area because even when its a tough fishing day I get to enjoy a several mile hike through a very beautiful gorge. Watch the video to see some of the sights and the trout that I catch.
