He could've done anything but stab the kid with the sword after he slit his throat. He would've at least got Achilles's respect if he delivered the body to him in person. But the book Hector is worse. After Helios informs Hector that Patroclus is masquerading as Achilles, he guides Hector's hand to stab Patroclus, then strips his armor off and wears it, before being confronted by Achilles without armor. After Achilles kills Hector, he removes his armor off Hector's body and drags him away. All in all he didn't deserve what he got after dying, but he certainly deserved to be killed for his actions.

@@KuryouTheRunt according to the work of the Iliad and the Little Iliad, the great hero was Diomedes. He was the favorite hero of the goddess Athena. He killed many important Trojans and wounded the gods Aphrodite, Apollo, Mars. seriously injured the hero Aeneas who was saved with the help of the goddess Aphrodite. He also tried to kill Hector three times, but was saved by the intervention of the god Zeus. When Achilles killed a relative in his anger, Diomedes was not afraid to duel him for revenge. After the old Nestor, he was considered the wisest of the Greeks. Hector was a second-rate hero. Twice he was in danger of being killed by Ajax and was saved by divine intervention. Patroclus was superior to Hector. He would have conquered Troy if the god Apollo had not prevented him. The god Apollo was the one who killed Patroclus and Eumorphos delivers the second fatal blow Hector merely gave him the finishing blow in an arrogant manner and wanted to throw Patroclus' dead body to the dogs. But Hector was the man who loved his family but not his country because he could have given Helen back later and the war would have ended Among the heroes, we place Achilles, Diomedes, Ajax in the first class of bravery. He does indeed say Hector was the best he had faced, to Priam, (Hector's father) when he returns Hector's body to him for proper funeral rites. Also, considering that Hector actually managed to land a blow on Achilles, when he slashes the tip of his sword against Achilles' cuirass, he does quite well. Granted, it doesn't wound Achilles at all because Achilles' economy of movement is so incredibly brilliant that he is able to step back just far enough that it only scratches his armor rather than slicing through into his chest. Also, how many times does Hector manage to avoid/deflect Achilles' favored killing move? (the jumping downward thrust with sword or spear that he uses on the big guy, with sword, in the opening fight) 2? 3? So yes Hector holds his own just fine when you consider who he's fighting.

Thought I might add my take on this. If you notice before the fight, hector’s skills were proficient hence why he was hailed as the best warrior in the Trojan army. With the exception of Ajax, he had no difficulty eliminating countless Greek soldiers with ease. Including patrocles, Achilles cousin. When Achilles and his men invaded the temple of Apollo, hector single handedly killed many Greek soldiers before confronting Achilles in the adyton. It’s not until he fights Achilles that you see he’s clearly outmatched and nowhere near the skill level or athleticism of Achilles. What’s ironic is that his fighting skills spawned from years of battle experience, saved him from being killed earlier on as Achilles was actually prolonging his defeat. He knew he had hector beat, he just had to see how his cousin was slain (slice to the throat) and then exploit hector’s main weakness which is his stamina. Notice how hector grew tired and Achilles just picked him off for the taking, delivering the final blow when he knew hector had nothing left in the tank. The psychology in this fight is great.

He knew he couldn't defeat Achilles, he knew Achilles was going to kill him, and he also knew that Achilles was angry because of who Patroclus was to him. (Depending on which version of the Trojan War you're reading/watching, Patroclus was his best friend/lover/cousin, regardless someone Achilles cared about deeply) And while Hector was such an honorable man that he knew he'd allow Achilles a proper funeral IF he defeated him, he was afraid that Achilles' anger would cause him to act dishonorably, and he didn't want his family to have to see the desecration of his body.

Something I couldn't help but notice is that the difference in styles is what determines this fight. Hector is more of a traditional warrior, which means he is obviously more used to charging into battle with an army behind him. So his fighting style relies on brute force and strength with no much room to maneuver. Part of the reason he had difficulty against Ajax was that he was facing someone who was stronger in a smaller arena (them being boxed in by the battle around them) and was only saved by stumbling on weapons. Whereas against Patroclus, Hector had the advantage because it was a much smaller arena, and Patroclus was trained to try and be more mobile in his fighting technique like Achilles. He was boxed in going against someone who fought with pure strength and brute force. Here, however... Hector is at a serious disadvantage the second the duel starts. Because Achilles is not a powerhouse, he's a fluid fighter who moves between opponents quickly. And he has as much room to maneuver as he wants in this fight. Hector does put up an incredible fight here, even repeatedly blocking Achilles' signature move multiple times(the one where he jumps and tries to bring his sword down into your neck. He uses it frequently in the film). Also, Hector forgets his own advice from earlier: "Make him swing and miss, and he'll tire." By the end of the fight, he was breathing heavily. And in a last-ditch effort to win, he tried to dual wield despite the fact that he was clearly not proficient in that the fighting style (you can see this in his still wide sweeping motions with his exhaustion really kicking in at this point). In summary, Achilles won the second Hector stepped through the gate. He just had to wait for his moments to strike after letting Hector tire himself out.

I think you're wrong about Achilles not being a powerhouse. You see multiple times in this fight (2:22 is my favourite example). But you also see him blocking Hector's wide swings with little effort rather than parrying them if you slow things down, not to mention stumbling Hector with the signature strike and shoving him backwards with one hand after Hector lumbers toward him exhausted. Another few examples that spring to mind is Achilles spear throw which has Hector SHOOK with how accurate it was from distance implying the strength needed to hurl a bronze spear with that force is "Impossible" at least for a man Achilles size. But also he straight up decapitates a statue with one swing in the same scene. Achilles is a demi-god so his physical capabilities are not on the same scale as the mortals in the film so he outmatched Hector in pretty much every capacity, martial ability, strength, agility, cardio, anything physical in general he had over on Hector. And despite all of this, Hector still put up a damn good fight and that is why it's so impressive from him.
@gamerguy19981
Жыл бұрын
@Andrew you make some fair points, but something to remember is that in this film Achilles is not a Demi-god. He's just a guy who is REALLY good at killing people. The film purposefully makes it seem that to the people of Greece and Troy characters like Achilles must be part god to be able to have the skills he does (the little boy who Achilles speaks with in the beginning of the film mentions some of the myths and stories that are being told about him). As for the fight, it is definitely fair to say that Achilles had Hector on the defensive for a majority of the fight, and that is what caused Hector to make his biggest mistake of switching up his style repeatedly. At first he purposefully goes defensive to see what Achilles is going to do, but as Achilles keeps pushing him back, that is what causes Hector to try and close the gap in order to prevent Achilles from being able to maneuver around him like he had been up till that point, but in doing so Hector was vastly exhausting himself, even if he had kept his shield I doubt he would have been able to hold it up with how his stamina was at the time. Also, while we don't know exactly how much the armor and shield of both Hector and Achilles weigh, we can probably guess that Hector's (at least his shield anyway) weighs a lot more than Achilles, which probably didn't help in terms of his movement and stamina

The buildup to this fight is excellent! So much of the film is spent making you like both these guys. Hector is the good man. He fights for his country, his girl, and his child. Yet, he doesn't want more fighting. But you also like Achilles because he has no allegiance to anyone or anything but himself and his own aspirations. A lone wolf, who never experiences a moment of weakness in the entirety of the film up until the very end. The rough part is knowing that only one of these two is gonna walk away, and you know it's not gonna be Hector. Especially after that scene where he's telling his wife what to do should he die. The sequence does such a good job of showing Hector giving it his all to his dying breath, but managing to never make the fight an equal exchange. Make no mistake about it, Achilles is absolutely in control from start to finish!

The way Achilles fights is my favorite of all martial arts. It's athletic but not solely reliant on strength and speed. He seemed principled, like theory-in-effect, like a teacher's favorite student. You see how he placed his spear on the shield, or placed the shield behind his head, etc? There isn't a martial art like this taught in real life, unlike karate/aikido/taekwondo, and unlike mma/muaythai/kickboxing/boxing/wresting/judo, but they made it seem like that was the traditional martial art in Ancient Greece. I'm not sure how to explain it.

Hector was out of shape having likely not had to fight in serious combat in a long time. I believe he was roughly even in skill level but just not fit enough to stay sharp in a prolonged combat. And they fight nearly naked, these guys have all this armor on them. Achilles admits that Hector was the best he’d fought, and Hector was the only one to counter Achilles for this long. When Achilles looks to his completely clean armor getting scratched by Hector’s attack, that’s a little detail to point out that no one else ever got that close. They were both getting tired by the end, Hector was just more afraid, Achilles was running on pure rage.

@conflictdiamonds Actually Hector was not even close at rusty especially if you compare it to the original Iliad. He was fighting all day and got into some really serious fights. He even challenged and wounded Aias the Telamon (a giant warrior of 2 m. Of height and raw muscle) Hector did come in and out Troy to rest but he was fighting non stop. In fact when he came out to challenge the Greeks the Greek heroes didn't want to face him and drew straws to decide. Achilles was definitely of equal if not slightly greater strength of Hector plus he was dipped into the water of immortality by his goddess mother Thetis making him invulnerable in battle. That means no matter what Hector did unless he knew about his heel he wouldn't win. Achilles was probably younger too, making him have some great stamina plus he was fighting like he had nothing to lose (for he too knew he would die) which gave him raw strength of emotion plus his hatred
