REPLACE the spring. They don't last forever.

I read over the instructions on how to tighten the drive belt. In one place, it says to insert the adjustment tool (rod) through the hole in the adjustment block. I tried this and the hole in the adjustment block is too small. Have YOU ever tried that??

You are correct. When purchased new (in 72) mine came with a piece of 5/16” dowel rod to do this adjustment. I can’t always find that rod, but a drill bit the same size works just as well. And, if you don’t have one the right size a 1/4” will work, just wiggle it some to “open up” the setting before tightening.

I just bought one of these for real cheap. Turns out this is half the problem

These machines are built dependable, durable and reliable. Any problems that arise are easily fixed given that you don’t abuse them beyond repair. If it starts and spins the tines, the rest is just a matter of adjustment and operation. I share a hand me down unit with my uncle and it has been through hundreds (if not thousands) of miles of corn, potato and garden patches. My grandfather bought it new in the 70’s and it has never missed a single growing season since it was brought home. I wish I could find a Troy bilt automobile.
