Dan, AWESOME BUILD!! I have been wanting to construct a pop up roof for my 2003 Ford Exursion SUV!! I was looking at a company from South Africa that builds them. However, those are thousands of dollars & I would have to cannibalize it to fit my vehicle. I saw one of your countryman do the same with a military truck. I am inspired by your video!! Thank you very much for putting it out there!! As my granddaddy used to say, "Poor folks have poor ways!" He was a jack of all trades & master of many! Unfortunately, he's past on, but would have loved your build!! Thank God, I got to spend lots of time with him in my youth & picked up the basic carpentry skills! In hindsight, if you could do a do over? Would you use steel or aluminum & to save on weight what about foam covered in fiberglass? Thanks again! Looking forward to hearing from you or anyone with advice for my build?

@@kennethbretches1289 awesome thanks so much! Appreciate the message of support and kudos to your grandfather, sounds like he was a good fella. In hindsight if I went timber again I would use marine ply. Aluminium would also be a great option although much more tricky to achieve curves. Best advice I got was to just start! Face the problems along the journey!

Thanks so much for showing how you constructed your camper! I have been looking on KZitem for a few months trying to find something. Your build is definitely the best I have seen! I will try to do something similar. Great job!!

Awesome job, building one now, did you see the fabric portion of the pop up or did you find somewhere to purchase those side panels? Thanks!

Great build. Hoping to do something similar but in aluminum or steel for my 2004 Toyota. I love the go for it attitude. And work with what you know, learn what you don't. Happy camping!

Hello nice work and helpful video. Do you still have plans with measurements for lifting mechanism? And how high did yours lift? Cheers

Hey Thankyou! Sorry no plans anymore. It lifts about 900mm or roughly 3feet.

@@dansbuilds Ok no worries, do you remember ruffly how high the handle bit (high bit in middle) stepped up? Or how long your gas struts were? Thanks

Brilliant design man! The way you broke it all down make it seem like a project I could tackle. Greatly appreciate all the work you put into it!

Love your build Dan and very much appreciate you sharing details. I'm about to build a similar set-up on the back of my Mazda BT-50. I'm thinking to make the roof pop-up a bit higher so there's more headroom on the bed ... did you have a good reason not to do that? No doubt you thought that through and might convince me not to do that. :-) Cheers Man!

Nice! Hope that build project goes well for you :). Honest answer is I just didnt allow enough space haha a little extra head room would be a great idea. I would build the hard structure of the camper higher in hindsight though, rather than a high poptop. Cheers

Thanks for sharing this build. Definitely not easy but not too technical to be done.

Thank you so much! Exactly what I am planning and so well explained! One question: the gas struts…. What did you use? What strength? They come in so many different configs.

Cheers! I can’t remember the exact order, I found it super difficult to calculate so basically just guessed the rough weight of the roof/4 struts

Sorry for the slow reply! I just used small button head screws with some plastic washers (if you use steel ones they can corrode and damage the canvas). Cheers! 🌀
