I’ve been a fleet refueler for a little under a year now. Some things to take from this video is that it really is a good gig. However it isn’t as easy as he makes it seem. Dragging 200ft hoses and delivering an average of 9,000 gallons a night 70 hours a week is mentally and physically exhausting. On the bright side, like he said I’m home every night and working this job has helped me pay for my first home on my own. I have talked to a few other guys and the lowest paid guy made 84k last year. It’s not a popular career but it’s a great one.

A bit of info from a guy that knows a little about this type of work. You can take the path this dude, and find a company with their own fuel truck. They're out there. I can think of at last one local company that has their own truck for their paving equipment. However, at least if you are in an area where delivering heating fuel is a thing, you can talk to any of the local fuel companies. Odds are good they have a diesel truck in addition to oil and/or propane trucks. My employer has all three, and the diesel truck isn't a sought-after gig. Many of us prefer to drag hoses across lawns vs having to climb on equipment. But if that's your thing, a fuel company would be happy to have you. If it's not, you can always do residential/commercial bobtail work. There's money in it either way.

Oh boy. Where do I even start? Listen, this isn't a horrible job, but it also sucks pretty bad. It's what we in the fuel industry call "wet lining". A guy will go out in the middle of the night and fill construction equipment while it's parked so that the workers will have full fuel tanks to start work in the morning. Another example is a truck like his will go to a bus garage overnight and fill school busses. I did this kind of work for like 5 years. It's rough. Nobody wants to do it at all. So you pull into a construction site in the pitch dark. There's 100 pieces of equipment sitting there. You park somewhere so you can reach maybe 10 of the pieces with your length of hose. You put a flashlight on your head and grab your ladder. You pull out every inch of your hose, 100 or 200 feet, as much as you have. And you walk around with a nozzle in one hand and a ladder in the other hand and start climbing onto every single piece of equipment one by one. The hose weighs a ton. It's constantly getting hooked on big rocks sticking out of the ground or it gets twisted up or kinked or it gets wedged under a tire and you have to keep walking over and freeing your hose up. Then you have to put everything away so you can pull up and park again so you can reach 10 more pieces of equipment. You're usually parked on some bad terrain, it's rarely just flat. You'll be parking at the top of a hill and climbing down to the equipment. When it rains you'll be soaked. The ground gets slippery and your hose gets caked in mud. Your boots weigh 50 lbs each thanks to the mud. You slip and maybe go down to a knee or something and the muddy hose rubs against your pants. I wish I could post a picture of my uniform after a shift like this. You'll be FILTHY! Like, take your clothes off before you walk into your house filthy. I used to lay my uniform out in the yard and take a garden hose to them. The inside of your truck will be a muddy mess, and you'll get your truck stuck a lot too. That will cause you to spin your tires and throw mud all over your truck. I can't even tell you how many times I've been stuck until workers come in the next morning and pull me out with a bulldozer and a chain. Okay, so what about bus garages? Well they're paved and usually pretty flat. So it isn't a mess. But the openings for the fuel tanks are very small. And you're using a big nozzle that doesn't automatically shut off when the bus is full. It's not like a nozzle at a gas station that you turn on fully and just wait for it to kick off. And air needs to leave the tank as fuel goes in so you can't rush it or you'll end up with fuel "spitting out" all over you. So go fill 100 busses with a nozzle that isn't automatic, trickle the fuel in really slowly and let me know how your forearms feel the next day. You won't even be able to feel your hands. So let's talk about how small and maneuverable these trucks are. That's true, but along with small trucks comes even smaller places to get into. Deliver heating oil to a house on some narrow country road. Back into a driveway that has deep ditches on either side and trees growing over that rip your mirrors off so now you can't see to back into a long, winding, steep, narrow driveway. And you hope you're at the right house because nobody has their address marked anywhere and in the winter everything is covered in snow anyway, including the driveway and the ditches that you can't tell where they even are now. You can call the customer, but heating oil deliveries happen through the day and they're at work so probably nobody will answer their phone. But if you get lucky maybe their dog will bite you or something. Of course not all houses are on narrow back roads. Some houses are on US routes or major state routes. Those are the ones where traffic is a huge issue. Back into a driveway off of a major highway just over a hill or just around a curve. Get in that driveway VERY quickly lest someone comes flying up on you and plows into your equipment, potentially hurting or killing them or you. It does happen. Does it pay well? Well, yeah. Kinda. I mean, anything pays better than OTR freight where you're just bumping docks or dropping and hooking. But it pays probably $10 per hour less than what I do now which is local class A hazmat tanker work. Sure, a tractor trailer is harder to maneuver. But you make a lot more money and you hook up a hose, open some valves, and just stand there for 45 minutes or something. All jobs suck. All jobs have their stressors. Might as well choose the job that hands you the biggest bag of money. Class B tanker isn't that job though.

I was a fuel driver in North Dakota mainly class b I was making 35 an hour plus overtime working 70-110 hours per pay week. (every 7 days) it was off the chain!! (the truck would sit on private property we would drive out there in company car if you are wondering about hours) wish I never quit and moved to FL lol it was sitting mainly on frac sites fueling the equipment. sadly a lot of that industry went to automated which the oil companies think it's safer but it's not. it's less money and their fuel instead of being charged at a higher rate now goes for whole truckload rate from a transport. ;( but there still is need for these trucks at coil tubing sites and pump down and workover sites and others.. but nothing like it used to be.
