I can relate to that good pyro advise from Scott. A couple summers ago I took our low lugging Mack, with a big load of aspen up a long grade out of the Mississippi River Valley in Wisconsin, on a hot July morning. I lugged it too long, just to see how tough she was. Luckily It crested the hill top just as the heat from the turbo melted some small air lines, lost all air and applied the brakes. After an hour or two of patching we finally got to the mill. I'll never beat on that "Dog" again! Thank you for the great loggin videos Wade.

I started on mechanical cats. I was taught to drive off the pyrometer. It would tell me if I'm lugging it or not by a rise in temperature. If it got to hot you downshifted, raised the rpms back up and it'd cool down. In the right gear you only need to be about half way down on the foot feed. I learned to drive in the Northwest on grades that were miles long. Once you got your gearing and road speed matched you just sit back and let her eat...Love the videos Wade.

yeah buddy i always try to get a good run at it but someone usually wants to get over in the way and you end up pulling the hill at 30mph instead. sometimes ill drag the break with my left foot for my downshifts coming down a hill so my road speed doesnt increase during the shift. not sure if anyone else does that but i started that when i had a truck without and jake and needed to slow down a little faster by using the brakes and gearing at the same time.

when you let it lug down to 1200-1300 rpm do you notice a rise in the temperature gauge? we have a kenworth t800 with the cat c12 for our log truck and I've notice over the years if you let it lug to low for to long the temperature will rise 10-20 degrees. once it climbs above 1500-1600 it comes back down in seconds.

Prolly do to drop of air flow and then the fan kicks on and you wind it up and it cools off... Just a guess some fans won't kick on till 200
@giovannipaludi2195

Yea that's exactly what it is the coolant system and the fan just need time to catch up. We don't get out on the interstate much so for us the smaller c12 with an 8LL transmission is great for running around town. I always wondered how the bigger motors with even more gear would run. Thanks for the reply

I regularly pull 44,000 pound loads up a steep hill, I don't have the time to wait like you did, I down shift when the next lower gear I'm going in the engine will be against the governor cause the hill is so steep it's. Not going to stay there at all. If you drove some of the older trucks like a 220 horsepower Cummins or 238 horse Detroit you don't have time to shift like that. Otherwise you have a. Good video And these young guys and gals should be. Thankful those low horse, low torque engines aren't used any longer.

What’s the best gear to be in in a 13 speed?
@andrewterra4938
2 жыл бұрын
I haul mulch with a trailer and go up alot of hills. Been driving the 13 for only 2 weeks. Tbh, best to go 30 mph if you had momentum. Go in at 6 low. That has me around 30 mph at 16 rpm. If you barely climbing a hill and it's like a start of the road. Keep it in 5 low to 5 high. Shift at 17 to 18 rpms. It drops in next gear at 14. And I keep my momentum. But I am rookie. So maybe I can learn from you actually haha

On the old Isuzu Giga 500s you could let that puppy lug right on down to 1150rpm and she would just hold there, then as she picked up to 1700 rpm grab another gear and shed lug from 1250 right on up to 1700 rpm I caught so many Cats m Cummins with that thing they couldnt believe they were being overtaken by an Isuzu

Hey man. Sometimes I can climb a hill when I’m fully loaded but there’s times where I’m in first and I try to shift into 2 and it just won’t go into gear. If I take it to 1500 and try to put it in at 11 or 12 and it won’t go. I’ll try shifting at 10 and it won’t go. Any tips.

Your rpm's are not lining up. Try to rev it slowly (not blipping the throttle) to about 300 rpm's higher. Cuz that's usually the rpm difference..

But it was nice knowing that pop's lil D3C Wide track winch Cat was near by just in case ...lol . Man i miss those days.. If you told me 20 years ago my Mild case of Cerebral Palsy on my left side i had since birth would catch up with me & id be cutting grass @ 40 cause cutting grass is easier on my body VS The trucks & equipment i'd called you crazy ...lol. but now i'm getting where i want a single axle dump for small loads for the lawn care & landscape customers. & Handle the small loads my buddies with tri axles dont want to fool with or go into the places they cant go . Hell my Girlfriend told me not long ago while i was asleep 1 night i called my old truck number out on the radio to the scale house in a rock pit to get loaded we used to haul out of . She said i called the truck number & inbound (meaning inbound scale) & the material i wanted & how many tons ...lol (my pop had 3 trucks & i was the 3rd truck) I Guess you can name me after a truck , later take me out the truck later in life BUT They will never take trucking out of me ..lol. I Miss the sound of a Thermodyne, E6 , E7 & E9 Mack diesel on a daily basis . id rather hear a Mack drive train than a Kawasaki engine on a JD 345 mower Any day ..lol
