@rustytr Well, if the housing market stays high where the average home prices is approaching $500K (?) -- and mortgage interest rates (~7% now?) as well, which is MORE of an obstacle to home ownership nowadays (for ME anyway) -- then a RV going for "only" $150K will be considered a steal, and people will live in them instead of something brick & mortar. So pricing -- what is considered (now) cheap and what is expensive -- is relative. ;-) -- BR

New idea for The Fast Lane Truck: take old trucks (for example a 1996 Bronco) and run the Ike Gauntlet just so people can appreciate how impressive these new vehicles are. I can tell you as an old truck owner that the idea of pulling a heavy trailer at 11k feet of elevation at more than 30 mph sounds impressive and impossible.

They kind of did that with Big Green four or five years ago. I'm not sure how long you've been watching TFL but years ago they bought an old square body Chevy with a carbureted 305 V8 and ran it up with IKE with something like 6000lbs behind it. It basically crawled down to a slugs pace and they had to finish out the run in the breakdown lane because they were going so slow. The videos backlogged somewhere on the The Fast Lane Truck channel.

There’s a comparison on JB reviews’ channel. Personally, I’ve got an Expedition Max and several trucks. I’d say go for the current-gen Expedition, or maybe wait for the next-gen Tahoe, which could roll out in 2025 with that sweet LZ0 diesel option. Especially if you’re towing a lightweight trailer a lot or cruising on the highway, that LZ0 diesel is the way to go. When I’m towing a 6,000 lbs at 65 mph, the Expedition gets me around 10 MPG, Ram’s doing 9.5 MPG, Ram 3.6 gets about 10 MPG, and the Sierra diesel shines with 18 MPG. The Expedition wins big in terms of interior comfort and upscale feelings (don’t compare it to German luxury brands). Those seats are much more comfortable than GM’s (firm and short in GM trucks)

Better than the Ram 5.7 with 8 speed automatic. If you live in flatter country, it’s just fine in a Tremor F150. The 3.5 Tremor definitely pulls better. The wide and low torque band, plus it is 500 lb ft of torque!! 500!!! The turbo helps a lot as well at these altitudes, of course.

The Coyote V8 is probably the best engine you can get for the F150: 1.: It's got enough power to tow what it's legally allowed. 2.: From what I've read on forums, and what I've heard from Ford technicians, it offers the best power-to-reliability ratio. 3.: it sounds amazing (4.: it's got great aftermarket support and plenty of tuning potential)

Most all trucks have had a manual shift mode for at least the last decade now. You could just stick it in a lower gear both up and downhill to avoid braking and keep your speed constant. These things aren't a real issue when using a truck irl. For comparison sake, however, they have to kind of ignore things that a driver would need to do manually in order to show off the truck and not the driver. Same goes for off-road tests. The interesting takeaway for me is more about the suspension than the engine.

I'm a Ford fan and would LOVE to own a Ford truck, but I don't have much use for one. ............because I'm an SUV guy and have owned an Explorer and three Expeditions !!! I LOVE SUV's !! My son asked me several times why I don't buy a P/U truck and here's what I tell him. BTW, he drives a P/U truck. 1. I can put ALL my fishing gear INSIDE my Expedition and lock it up. It's not bouncing around in a truck bed and getting damaged. (Yes, I know there are rod holders available) 2. I can carry more people in my SUV. 3. When I lock stuff inside my truck, it's ALL protected by alarm vs. having a lockable bed covering. 4. I can carry longer boards INSIDE my SUV than he can fit in the bed of his truck. 5. I have NEVER once squealed or smoked my tires pulling my boat out of the water (and I'm only a 2x4, regular wheel base). 6. I can carry a LOT of things inside my SUV and not worry about any of it getting wet, flying away, or getting damaged. I could go on, but I think you get the gist of it. I get more use out of my Expedition that I ever could from a P/U truck. Again, don't misunderstand, I love Ford trucks and would love to own one, but the Expedition is just a much better option for me. Anybody else ?

I know you guys have no choice about what season the manufacturer gives you the truck. I just wish it was summer when you do the Ike tests, because I remember when you did the last HD test in summer and the heat really was an issue when max towing. That exposed a truth that was a hard pill to swallow. The absolute worst case scenario for all 3 brands is the Ike, in summer trying to max tow. It would appear that none of them can adequately cool their motors under these conditions. I would be ecstatic to see TFL Truck and Mr Truck be SINGLEHANDEDLY responsible for pushing the big 3 to upgrade their cooling capabilities to handle this test. We know the motors, the brakes, the transmission, the suspensions can handle this epic torture. The cooling systems are the weak link. I hope to see them all get to the point where they can handle this test. Imagine spending 80 to 100k on a truck, but having to ignore multiple passes around the countries interstate system from May to September because you will overheat while towing. They need to do better.

Thanks for this comparison. This is my current dilemma, 3.5 ecoboost vs 5.0 coyote. Get up and go on ecoboost is great and non-towing mpg is better. Because the ecoboost turbos are engaged when towing the mpg is not as good as the V8. looking at my future towing needs I feel I will be spending much more time non-towing so the ecoboost is a good choice. The good news for me is that truck sales are slow. I have a line on a used 2022 F10 XLT with an ecoboost (8k miles) priced at 53k. But they have been trying to sale it at that price for over a month now. I also drove a brand new 2022 F150 XLT with the 5.0 V8. MSRP just over 63K. The dealership said they could get the price down to 55K. I have the feeling there just giving me lip service. I drove that truck 3 weeks ago and it is still sitting at the dealership. The good problem is there is a lot of used F150s with the 3.5 ecoboost motor for sale. The 5.0l is still a rare find. If you're like me and have been putting off buying a new or newer truck the market is much better. This true for GM and Ram as well with a couple of exceptions. In used the GM 6.2 V8 is very rare. So are the 3.0l diesel pickups. Crew cab Ram Rebel pickups still sale quickly, but Quad Cabs sit on the lots for months.

If someone told me 15 years ago a V6 gas engine would outperform a V8 in the near future, I would have laughed at them. The fuel economy difference towing is really nothing at the pump but the difference in power is very noticeable. Can't really compare any V8 with an aftermarket supercharger or turbo system because I'm talking stock vs stock. I'd prefer a V8 but just for sound. It’s the test everyone wanted, especially the 5.0 fans, that the didn’t know they needed. The Tremor 3.5 would nearly match, or more likely exactly match, the Expedition. There such little difference in the torque. So you would be able to set the cruise control on a F150 3.5 EcoBoost, (or the PowerBoost especially), the same as the Expedition. I am positive the “base” expedition with the standard 3.5 EcoBoost would perform very similarly as well. I have had the 5.0 and absolutely loved it, still do!! Unfortunately to have a truck that really tows the maximum in 1/2 ton guise built by Ford, you need the 3.5 EcoBoost. The 5.0 is more than adequate still regardless.

The engine wear during high rpm descents is an interesting one. Nothing is generating much friction and heat to wear anything substantially. The pulleys on the serpentine belt have bearings, and the engine is oiled and water-cooled. A big risk is much older trucks with cast iron oil pumps. The centripetal force can rip them apart and cause engine failure. A modern alloy engine won't have that trouble, especially since the autos won't allow an engine to overspeed and risk valve float.

True, but also most people’s argument against the V6 that it’s more unreliable than the v8 is completely anecdotal and based on personal experience not reality. The truth is Ford’s been selling way more ecoboosts than coyotes since 2015 so of course you will hear more about ecoboost problems. The fact is with the proper maintenance, it can be just as reliable as the v8 regardless of how people feel about turbos. Especially with the new cylinder deactivation tech that’s on the coyotes I wouldn’t see a reason people go with the inferior engine other than nostalgia or wanting to compensate with engine sounds

For me it's the opposite. Had a '22 502A with the 3.5, and it was sort of boring to me. Had tremendous/effortless thrust in the low rev range, but if you wound it out it just doesn't give you that exponential increase in power like a NA motor does. The 5.0 is more exhilarating to drive. It of course sounds good, but the way it pulls harder and harder as you near red line is just a more satisfying driving experience IMO. As for towing, the 3.5 is better for high terrain apps like this vid, but if I was towing heavy in the mountains, or even on the flats I'd just get a super duty.

Mmm... judgemental much? Over the summer I traded my '13 F150 3.5l ecoboost in on a GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 with the 6.2l V8 and factory performance exhaust. I loved my Ford and had great service reliability with the TT V6. BUT, with govt. regulations pushing manufacturers inevitably towards smaller displacement ICE engines and hybrid or full EV power, I opted for a last gasp opportunity to own a classic, but we'll sorted v8 powerplant for my truck. IMO, your comment regarding controlled and confident power delivery from a TTV6 v. V8 also misses the mark. My 6.2l has a more instantaneous and more linear power curve with no turbo lag or boost rush. Sure, once boost builds the Ecoboost may walk the V8 in a simple drag race, but as a daily driver operating over the entirety of the rev range I find the 6.2l to be the more confident and composed engine. Courses for horses as the Brits say.

I wish they would measure the lift at the front axle to. At the end of the video you can see that the F150 didn’t only squat, but the gap above the front tire grew as well

That's why F-150s are only rated to tow 5,000lbs without a weight distributing hitch. The towing setup they used was way out of spec.

I’m curious now that you have the Banks I dash if you could tell us the transmission temps at the end of the runs also, that would be a great indicator if the truck can really handle the run, overheating your transmission in my opinion means it can’t handle the run.

Can you confirm the tremor towing capacity. Looking at tremor forums and other places, people with the tremor don't know what they can tow because Ford dropped the ball on information. No one knows if it's 7000 lbs of the 10,900 lbs.

I get 10 towing up and down mountains or steep hills. I get 13 towing on flats or rolling hills. My gross weight averages around 14k#, 6 for the truck, 8 for the trailer. It is a somewhat blunt faced with an overall height of 11'2. The difference is speed. I never drive 70. I am a full time RVer and I have time. I usually cap my drives to about 300 miles a day... Preferably half that. I am not in a hurry, and I need my rig to last. I also like to avoid panicked stops, so I keep traffic running away from me. Dry I average 28 to 30 on highways. My full average is running about 14.8 over 4k miles with about 65% towing miles.

I've been saying that for years. They need to remake the excursion with 3 bench seats. I want the ability to care 9 grown adults and still tow 15k. Today 1 tons have the capability but 1/2 tons just don't have the payload to be full of people and still tow a decent weight

The Tremor is more for off roading not hauling honestly. Especially with the 5.0. If your seriously into hauling, get a 250. But I will say the price of trucks are getting out of hand.

I did like the cruise control test. The gear seeking of the coyote was a bit of a surprise. Manually putting it in 4th might have been better, but we will never know. Also it was only 7000lbs but did have a big frontal area.

Guys, using cruise while towing = torrid mpg. I bet with specific throttle control, the expedition mpg up the Ike would be quite a bit better. Especially with 510ft-lbs on tap.

Guys, if you talk to the engineers at Ford, please tell them to program a "hunt mode" or "ranch mode." Nothing should come on unless you turn it on. All honks and beeps should stop. Nothing nor frustrating than trying to keep quiet in the dark getting out in the field and your car honks with the key in your pocket.

About the air density and the towing rating reducing even on a turbo engine- sure the turbo can make the same power, but there's less air going through the radiator so cooling can become an issue. You're burning 15 GPH of fuel towing up these hills- that would be enough to heat 30 Alaska homes. A lot of heat to dissipate.

I have a C-Max and cruise control behaves the exact same way, it drops down 4-5 MPH then kicks in the engine or shifts to catch up. It's really frustrating. I thought it was just a hybrid issue, but looks like it might be a Ford cruise control issue. Never had that issue with my Chrysler 300 (RIP).
