Crater Lake, once called Mt. Mazama, is an ancient volcano that erupted and then collapsed in on itself. It filled with snow and ice and rain over the ensuing millenniums, today we have Crater Lake. When driving through road cuts in Oregon you may see a layer of light-whitish ash in one of the layers. That is from the Mt. Manama eruption.

7:52 - Yes, you're right. Crater Lake used to be a composite/cone volcano, like Rainier or St Helens. It 'blew its top' in a catastrophic eruption over 7,000 years ago, and what is there today is the 'throat' and that extremely deep crater lake. The name geologists gave to the former volcano is Mount Mazama, long after the fact because of course there were no geologists to name thing 7,700 years ago. Apparently the Mazama word comes from the Kalamath people's language. Anyway, your memory served you well here, MMM, as you remembered the history of Crater Lake and its progenitor mountain, with no need to look it up or check spelling as I had to do to type this up. Your romps into local geology when you're driving around are one of the most underlooked and underappreciated aspects of this channel, and I am always happy to see when you do go into geology, as I am an insufferable geology nerd.

Thanks for all movie clips you do. They are great to watch. Down here in Tassie we don't have big highways like you have just a main road with lots of side roads. Plenty of trucks here with Passing Lanes. I like snow driving trips you do, only snow in highland here mainly in winter which close the roads until the snow ploughs come out. Anyway keep up making great movie trips.

On highway 97 from Bend to Klamath Falls there are places where the trees along the highway are spaced out in such a manner that their shadows across the road will cause a hypnotic feeling. Can be dangerous. In a lot of places in eastern Oregon they do use pumice type on snowy and icy roads.

I drove 140 from Klamath Falls to Winnemucca NV in April 1989. I was driving around the country from Upstate New York in my old Mustang and for some reason I drove this section at night. There were sections of the road west of Denio Junction that had washed out and hadn't been repaired yet, no signs or barricades to warn motorists of the danger ahead. I had several near misses that night but made it through without any damage. That was the best road trip I ever made and I still own that car.

Some History: Deep Water in a Sleeping Volcano Crater Lake inspires awe. Native Americans witnessed its formation 7,700 years ago, when a violent eruption triggered the collapse of a tall peak. Scientists marvel at its purity-fed by rain and snow, it’s the deepest lake in the USA and one of the most pristine on Earth. Artists, photographers, and sightseers gaze in wonder at its blue water and stunning setting atop the Cascade Mountain Range.

But all the videos I've seen of your's, I have yet to see any. Not that I would wish on you. It's just an observation. Beautiful scenery, I love the views. Many beautiful evergreen trees. Be well, keep safe and God bless. Cattle fencing is usually about 5 feet tall. It's really something to see you on dry land and then see snow. You do get around. Later.
