I hauled many a loads of salt from that Morton salt plant and when it was still the American salt plant before it became the Morton plant. American moved to Ogden in the late 80,s . The Morton plant was originally was east of the exit 99 truck stop closer to Salt Lake cant remember the exit. I think it was exit 111.

We might of met. I drove for Leatham Bros. out of their Portland yard in the 70s. Then drove for Jr. Leatham in 84-85. Hauled a lot of salt off those flats. The worst was Hardy Salt out at Wendover.

Hi Mike; Thanks for the re-memories. I am appreciating your videos more and more.. I traveled to Tucson, Arizona to see the country and visit with my favorite aunt [she's the only other lefty in the family] earlier in 1970 with my younger brother [23 mo.]. We traveled this way through the Great Salt Lake and stopped for a swim. Three years later we traveled to California with two motorcycles to ride US 1 in the Big Sur country and cycled around whenever we stopped I believe we traveled through Red Mountain pass, but we did it at night as we had played in Cheyenne, Wyoming's Frontier Days Festival. Good thing we did with those drop-offs. Truly scary to look at the top of a pine tree at the side of the road knowing it is 30' or more to the roots. Loved your explanation of the paved width vs. trailer swing or drag around the curves. Your tips on backing brought back memories or driving with our boat trailer behind and backing. We had three lane highways here when I was a teen and passing was restricted to your side when the line was dotted. To be safe everyone had to respect the rule to avoid head-on collisions. Passing with the boat in tow was hairy. The three lane roads went the way of manners and courtesy. Now it's no passing and no lane changing. Looks like the way of the driverless trucks and cars and city busses. If you can't find a parking space, get out and tell the car to drive around the block until you come back. Governed vehicles can be trouble at the wrong time all because the insurance co. or gov't thinks the limit is smart. Not so. Good reason for owning your own horse. I presently own an '86 Cadillac governed at 80 mph [the speedo reads to 80]. I have repeatedly found myself forced into uncomfortable situations because of the limit. The current restriction of 120 mph is so high I never notice it in my Mustang GT. It does give the cops a chance to catch up. Good movie at Bonneville Salt Flats is "The World's Fastest Indian" (Motorcycle) w/Anthony Hopkins as record holder Burt Munro. good story, too. Be Safe, Be Smart, beware!

Years ago the T/A truck stop at the 99 exit was a Union 76. And across the freeway to the north was a salt plant called Cary Salt or Hardy Salt then later became Domtar Salt then latter AKZO Salt. Then Cargill Salt bought it and moved the plant west to the 77 exit where it is now.

We are back in construction season. I prefer construction season because I never have to chain up. Although the delays on Cabbage Hill west bound can wear you out. Last year it was a parking lot it makes you think your driving in Portland traffic. Some of you may not know Cabbage Hill is on I84 in Oregon. A 2000 feet elevation change in 6 miles. Another nice video,
