when he move the matchbox up and down on one side , if you remove your other side's headphones, you can still feel it moving up and down, which in this case the sound the brain process not only the difference in tone and time between two ears, but also the difference in tone and time of the sound itself which is why our ears have that shape so that the sound from different locations can reflect and create a different sounds .

The most amazing part of this video is that it makes you feel not only front and back but UP and DOWN, on your headphone, which is mind blowing. I guess it's kind of HRTF tricks but still keep wondering what kind of black magic it is or how expensive the hardware it need to approach it. And I'm happy to see there are still some activities on this channel.

I find all these rustly-shaky-papery-snippy sounds soooo soothing. They put me right to sleep. It would be so so so awesome if you could make more- a longer one to just relax to...the match shaking is really great and how it moves around, and more scissor snipping would be lovely... love the 3D sound.

one of the very few videos where you can actually tell the location of the object. In most of the videos/audio samples i get the feeling as if the object making the sound was in my head. But here you can tell if its in front of you or behind, which is a really tricky stuff to replicate (left/right is obviously easy). Maybe it's the setup of the mics in a dummy, or maybe it's the room... i just like to getting back to this video once in a while... i would love to hear more like this form you

the front was discernible but at about a 35 degree angle above my nose, i think they should have put the front sound sources much MUCH closer to the front of the microphone apparatus, perhaps at near-contact distance, i think that would have made for a much stronger frontal sensation of sound source.

It's a stereo recording made with two microphones. By placing those microphones at the same relative positions you would find two ears attached to a human head, you can create the same delay that our brains would recognize and use to calculate the distances and positions of audio sources. That's why it really feels as if you were there - by wearing headphones, you're supplying the ears with almost exactly the same data. The technology however, is still really just stereo.

I'm not an audio engineer, so I don't know all the details, but it's basically just adjusting the right balance into the left, right and middle audio signals. It gives a decent 3D effect but of course it's not possible to make complete 3D audio with only 2 speakers.

This is the first binaural audio in which I perceive sound from the front. However, it seems to be the viual clues. If I close my eyes, the sound comes from above instead of from the front. Additionally, I would like to hear the sound from some distance.
@IDrinkLava

It is above. The matchbox is being shaken slightly above where the dummy head microphone is positioned, so it takes that into account in the recording.

In such recordings, I can't tell if the audio is coming from the front, unless there's visual clue. It feels like it's always coming from behind, and more distinctly from behind when the sound source is actually behind you.

The scissors make me a bit uncomfortable, because once when I was a kid my mom accidentally nipped my earlobe with a pair of scissors. We were putting a toy crown on my head but it was a bit too big, so my mom adjusted a band to it, and when she tried to cut the excess off I jerked and she cut my ear. She was so sorry, but I forgot about it pretty soon since it wasn't even a big cut and it was my birthday.

The videos at HolophonicStudios have a different effect on each listener, and although the multitude of noises may decrease the 3D effect for some people, the main idea behind HolophonicStudios is to create 3D audio scenes that can't be recorded using a microphone, and to add variety and excitement to the range of available holophonic recordings.

This is awesome. I love holophonic sound, and this is one of the best examples I've heard. Most audio clips which claim to be holophonic are really lacking, and don't provide real 3D sound (on all axes) at all. It's very rare to find samples where you can actually hear the sound moving vertically, most of the time it's just "advanced stereo". Make more of these!
Brilliant. You put a newspaper on my head! I understand stereo, but how do you make the illusion of UP and DOWN as well? how does it work? On normal earphones too
@mikeg_123

These recordings actually use a model of the human head and ears to replicate the 3D effect and the microphones are placed in the ear canal of the model head. The shape of the ears really gives the 3D effect and like you said the distance between the microphones also.

Hasn't this always been available with headphones? Is it merely the balance of sound across each headphone...or am I wrong? I assume, because for long time has one side of headphones been able to be louder than the other side, and I assume it is merely this combined with our brain trying to make logic of it which gives the audio illusion sensation.

I never hear anything from the front either. I've listened to a lot of holophonic sound clips, and it's the same way with each one. How is this possible? I can't imagine how that's possible for a sound card to change the direction of holophonic sound without adding some sort of distortion or some other audible defect.

Actually, it's a 3D effect. We're not "perceiving" it in 3D because of the video (if that's what you're implying). This is actually a trick the mind plays on our sense of hearing. The brain processes the sound(s) both our ears are receiving and tells you where said sound(s) is/are coming from. This process is an algorithm, which is called "Cetera". So, it is a 3D simulation, just presented to you using stereo technology.
