Ultimately, this is about James Cameron being revisionist. Some directors insist on making these sorts of changes. We've seen revisionist issues with Peter Weir's 4K restoration of Picnic at Hanging Rock and several of Wong Kar-Wai's 4K restorations. There was no need to be this revisionist when there's an interpositive and there are prints available, which I'm sure could be used as digital restoration references. James Cameron simply doesn't like film grain and he's one of the pioneers of digital acquisition. He wants to change the look of his films. As for me buying this film, I actually never got around to seeing this one, somehow, and I've held off for years waiting for a proper Blu-ray release. The news of the changes has only made one minor change in my plans: instead of splashing out on day one, I'll wait until the film inevitably drops in price or pops up in a multi-buy offer. The only one I'm buying day one is The Abyss. I'm going to have to import it from France, as the UK release has been cancelled.

True Lies is'nt the only movie shot using Zeiss Standard Speed and Super Speed lenses and they look nothing like the new True Lies 4K looks like on 4K or BD. If the negative was damaged why not go to an interpostive and use that either completely or for the scenes in the OCN that are too badly damaged. Its what they do on other movies if the OCN is either lost or damaged.

The reason it looks like this is simple, focus issues. True Lies is packed with focus problems, countless shots are badly out of focus. It's visible enough on the Blu-Ray and would stick out like a sore thumb in 4k. So it might not be that the negatives are damaged but instead they were "ruined" from the start in Cameron's eyes so he went to Peter Jacksons studio to fix it. The majority of issues involve aggressive grain reduction which PJ's team love and aggressive sharpening to try and fix the focus. People keep on blaming Ai as it's the latest buzzword but in reality these are the exact same problems that plagued Jacksons previous 4k releases e.g. The LOTR trilogy which didn't use Ai.
@alecsandercp1
6 ай бұрын
Wizard of Oz suffered severe film shrunkening over time. And its a technicolor film, meaning there is 3 different film reels, with 3 colors for every shot. The restoration process included restoration of the film shape AND aligment with the other reels that also shrunken differently, and the movie looks amazing in 4k. The Red Shoes suffered the same problem. Soft and out of focus scenes happens on movies every time. It's called cinema and its normal. Saying that the AI scrubbling was needed because "average consumer would not like the quality of the original neg" misses the point. People buying 4k blurays are not average consumers. Those are people that cares about movies and understands the nature of the film media. They should have released the bluray disc without the exaggerated processing and then made the AI stuff for the streaming copies, where the "average consumers" are.

True Lies wouldn’t look how it does if the OCN was in such bad condition, Cameron just wanted to give it an updated look instead of the grainy and soft out of focus shots, the soft out of focus shots are part of the film!!!!! There’s plenty of 4k westerns that have out of focus scenes, and it still doesn’t take away from the film. We don’t care if it doesn’t look 4k-yee enough, give us the film how it was meant to be seen. Their excuse for why they de-grained the film is nothing more than an a True Lie!

They could have used an interpositive. Second, comparing the 4K to the DVD is laughable. Of course the 4K is going to look better in comparison. The DVD was sourced from a Laserdisc transfer and is ancient. You would have been better off comparing the D-Theater transfer used for the Spanish blu ray. The information of those sources and lenses is, condescending at best and not trustworthy at worst like others have said. I don't think we actually need so many apologists for these releases. It's just not believable they would've had such a hard time with True Lies with what has been achieved with other releases lol. If every single release started to go down this path, I'd be done as a collector, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one. James Cameron for years has been pointing out the dangers of AI, only to use it for awful results for his films. I don't need to "pixel gaze" into 2 screens to compare releases, it's awful on it's own merits because I have eyes lol. It's a travesty that the only other release to really compare is the DVD in the first place, it's a silly argument trying to prop up this new release by comparing back to it. People are rightly calling out "Late Night With The Devil" and I don't see why this is different just because it's James Cameron. I don't even think he was as personally involved as the marketing says, considering the results.

Take my thoughts with a grain of salt because I’m about to share all my hot takes - I watched True Lies in the theater when it came out in the 90’s. I remember it looking clean and slick and very well shot. One thing I don’t remember about it was the film grain. I think people are hyper focusing on it. The fact is, this is the best the film has looked since its theatrical release. Use of AI to clean up an image is also something people focus on way too much here. AI can be problematic (I mean we’ve all seen the Jaws 3 images at this point), but if used smartly it can actually enhance the image. The fact is, True Lies 4K in motion looks amazing. Freeze framing it isn’t something audiences did back in the 90’s to see how much grain or messy an image was. It was about the experience of the whole movie and I think the 4k retains that experience quite nicely.

Some early reviews were not favorable but were good enough that on release day I did go to the video section at my Walmart and was going to pick up anyway. They had Wish 4K steelbook, Aquaman 2, Kung Fu Panda and some other steelbooks, but none of the Cameron films. Walked out spending $170 on movies that day and none of them were Cameron films. More reviews and even your review has me convinced not to spend full retail on this now. Granted it is your split screen on a computer monitor but it bounced back and forth which looked better between 4K and DVD. Knowing how Road House from Vinegar Syndrome looked and the absolute incredible work done on Suspiria from Synapse, I don't buy the excuses in what was once one of the highest grossing films from a major studio and director. Jaws has an incredible documentary of how much work they put into it. This film deserved the same love and care instead of some quick passes and AI to save a buck and time to shut us fans up. Cameron has shown he is too busy with his Avatar movies for the time and doesn't care about his film history enough to wait so long but too much ego to let someone who gives damn to do it right. Oh it's the studio fault? Well too bad they didn't wait just a little longer and let Sony control it because you are right, unfortunately this is now the best it will ever look. It is a travesty that fans just get suckered to buying instead of respecting them giving them the best.

That jaws transfer is pretty bad also. Universal digitally recolored backgrounds, removed wires & rebalanced black levels. The iconic Indianapolis scene which had a single shot were the background was different, because it was shot on location in reality, but the new 4K has the scene change colors 3 times because they only fixed the background for the speech but not the scenes before or after so it’s a worse continuity error than in the 70s. Universal got better with the horror sets of the 30s movies but it’s still heavily altered digitally both audio and visual

Don't you have a mind of your own, or do you always depend on someone else's opinion? The majority of people have been waiting for Blu-ray/4K movies from James Cameron for over 15 years. Now they're finally here and you're going to pass? You don't know what you're missing! If you're unable to get any copies now, you can't blame nobody but yourself, because you should've followed your first mind and preordered them anyway, like you've started to.

If randos "wishing the director was shot in the head" is something you think _means anything at all,_ then you're not learning any lessons from being on the internet. The fact is that the A.I. "enhancement" is blatant and even people who are willing to overlook the flaws in the transfer have to mention that the flaws are there. The Spanish bootleg looks, in many ways, superior, with more detail in the faces, than this 4k abomination. And before you get upset that I used the word _abomination,_ know that I'm going to go interact with my family in a loving way after this. I'm not living my life angry at Cameron. But right now? Right now I'm going to complain. If he can spend hours and a lot of money ruining the transfer of a movie I've been waiting for years for, then I can spend a few weeks complaining about it.

I think what most likely happened is that Disney were too cheap to do a new 4K scan of the OCN for True Lies. Instead they went back to the master that Lowry Digital original worked on circa 2009 for the aborted blu ray release. Used the AI tools and DNR to rework and upscale it for 4K and because its the first one they worked on it looks the worse. The Abyss and Titanic had much more recent 4K scans so they look much better than how Aliens and True Lies turned out.

The image was too sharp and therefore they had to use AI to create more details? Do you hear yourself speak? ^^ But to make this comment not entirely negative: While I don't like the digital processing and really hate the new color grade the experience can be saved by turning the brigntness of the TV down a lot. Makes the picture actually look good color and grain wise. This is the way I'll watch the movie from now on and I think it's fine. Perfect--no, fine--yes.

@@TwinFlicks I paraphrased and I guess that's not what you really meant. ^^ What I always hear is that they used AI to create (or "enhance") details. To me that doesn't fit an image that's too sharp to begin with. Also sharpness is normally not considered a problem when it comes to mastering for 4K (the opposite is more like it). But I can understand that a filmmaker doesn't want an overly sharp image. What I don't understand is why the same filmmaker then tries to make the image sharper with post processing tools.

Thank you for this review! 4K looks way better. I do agree that there seems to be a slight over-processing of the facial skin texture which seems to result in too much smoothing of natural wrinkles and slightly extra glossy look to it as well. This makes the face appear like the actor look odd, given their original "rough" look... So, perhaps too much there. Not sure how this one is a comparison shot @ 9:25: There's an oddity where the "extras" have changed. Overall tho, if they just cut a little back on the skin smoothing... it looks really great.

The fact that the original negatives were damaged is a good reason as to why these methods had to be done, and like they said, the materials have been used for decades. There was a 1080p cut of the film which came out in the D-Theater HD-VHS format in the early 2000s, which was floating around for years and made it on to the Spanish bootleg that came out a few years back - even that was better than the DVD, but this 4K version blows it away. I have zero problems with DNR scrubbing as long as an appropriate AI usage restores the detail. Lord of the Rings and Star Wars were done properly and look amazing. I know the puritans hate it and think it's a form of vandalism, and that's their bad luck. A film like American Graffiti looked terrible because it was DNR scrubbed with no AI restoration Haven't seen the disc of True Lies yet, but I've heard it's better than last year's digital version, which honestly did look terrible in places, but for the most part the rest of the film looked good. Unfortunately I don't think the grain vs no grain, natural vs AI/DNR divide is going to go away any time soon.... One problem I've noticed with a lot of 4k restos is that it's obvious that many films had shots or scenes filmed out of focus - especially close-ups of faces. The face looks blurry and soft, while their clothing looks sharp and clear. it's annoying as hell but it's the way they were filmed.

There have been plenty of amazing transfers of very old movies that did not use A.I. There's no reason to think that A.I. is needed for a good restoration.
@jamied1579
6 ай бұрын
@@Selrisitai But I think it is needed for some transfers. Some films with heavy or excessive grain look truly terrible, and I do not believe that is what the filmmaker intended, once it's remastered into 4K. Watching in a cinema and at home on a high-end 4K or 8K tv are two different mediums and so the home release should reflect that. Personally, I prefer a very clean, sharp image wherever possible, but there are many films with light to moderate levels of grain that look great and are still huge improvements over previous releases and I have no problem with that. But as the guy is saying, with some films the negatives are significantly damaged and a huge amount of restoration is needed - The Godfather films were another example of that... As I said, I don't think the grain vs no grain divide is going to go away, unfortunately...

What equipment exactly do you use to "review" these discs on? My 7.2.4 Full Arendal 1723 speaker system with Marantz processor and Emotiva amps says it is a typical disney mix with almost no lfe and neutered dynamics. And this is from someone who has played the laserdisc so many times i know the dialogue of this film by heart, which by the way, was FAR superior in sound mix to the new 4k and even the spanish bluray. Oh, and i call bullcrap on the "insider" information about the negative being damaged. I think you are being trolled with incorrect information. True Lies looks like this because Cameron can't keep his hands off shiny new toys like AI and went overboard just because he could.
@MsMarco6
4 ай бұрын
If that was the case the The Abyss would look just as bad but it doesn't. It's not perfect but leagues better than this. The reason it looks like this is simple, focus issues. True Lies is packed with focus problems, countless shots are badly out of focus. It's visible enough on the Blu-Ray and would stick out like a sore thumb in 4k. Clearly it bothered Cameron enough that he wanted it fixed and PJ's studio claimed they could do it, alas they bit off more than they could chew. The majority of issues have 0 to-do with Ai, whilst there are a few shots with obvious Ai artefacts that's not what's happening most of the time. In most shots it's traditional DNR erasing detail just like PJ did to the LOTR trilogy and aggressive sharpening to try and fix the focus. As someone who works with Ai upscaling a lot I can tell you this isn't what Ai artefacts look like.

You’re forgetting that very short-lived D-VHS format I had true lies on D-VHS, and it looked outstanding and it pretty much blue way the DVD in picture and sound quality no question. unfortunately, the player and tapes I owned have long been sold off. It would be interesting to compare them now as I’m sure the 4K would be superior, but it might be close as the difference sometimes between a Blu-ray mastered from the 4K source and the 4K the HDR being the difference. I did enjoy that format for a while, but the players were very expensive. The tapes were about double what a DVD cost and the killing factor for me was the tapes would show wear fairly quickly maybe just one or two viewings and the tape decks did not hold up. I went through two machines in just a couple years anyways appreciate all that you do. Have a great one.
