Lady Ochiba looks unnerved by the poem, which can be seen as layers of warning, prediction of death, and much more. She sees all the layers unfolding before her, while the men cannot. I wish we non-Japanese could grasp the subtleties of poetic language and deep symbolism, but we only have a translation from a different language and cultural history. Even within these limitations, it is powerful.

Hello, I innerstand how you feel about language barrier. Simply, you can make the choice to learn any language you desire. What this series show very well, especially through the sentences " we live and we die. We control nothing beyond that. " is our freedom through and through.

"Snow" means "yuki" in japanese, and "yuki" also means "gone". "Ochiba" means fallen leaves, so "leafless branch" means "Ochiba". therefore Mariko told her that "I will be gone in this evening, looking at you,"Ochiba". She prophesy what will happen this evening.

Mariko is the leafless branch. Ochiba is the fallen leaves. The leaves have fallen off the branch, just like their friendship has fallen apart. She wanted to mend the friendship so that the leaves would be on the branch. This was the signal to Ochiba to switch sides and that is how Toronaga wins.

Great analysis into the Mariko’s unfinished poem. I haven’t had this clarity even in the Japanese critics. - Shogun is a great work to depict Japanese culture, it’t thanks to SANADA Hiroyuki’s devotion into every detail for authenticity, but also thanks to the foreigners’ eyes to extract the essence of Japanese culture. Your analysis is definitely a part of that.

When I wrote this poem, I never imagined that someone would analyse it and give it so much meaning. Thank you very much! Frederik

Well done in the understanding. Of course it could have lots of meanings or maybe even none. But, that would not be Mariko to do a poem without meaning. Nothing she ever done was without meaning. But I agree with you. It was not intended for anyone other than Lady Ochiba, and she knew it. The way she reacted to it means she understood what Mariko was talking about. Was it a warning for Lady Ochiba, yes, I believe it was a veiled warning. But maybe not in the way your thinking of. It is a warning telling her to be careful who you align with it could come back on you. But at the same time was adding validity to her words by talking about her own potential fate. The fact that ended up happening as she said in the poem. To me at least was what strengthened the opinion of Lady Ochiba to withdraw support for Lord Ishido. Did Mariko know about her death or it was likely to happen..... the manner of it no how could she know that. But, if you think back to a previous episode. Lord Toranaga says to Mariko "are you ready?" after a slight pause she replies with "yes". So did she expect to die doing her Lord's bidding in Osaka Castle? yes, I believe she did. Did Lord Toranaga use Mariko yes. But, in a subtle way he was also giving Mariko what she desired the most. Death and not having to live with the guilt of it all anymore.

This can be the Shogun prequel, the youth and friendship of Mariko and Ochiba in the midst of the clan intrigue and political unrest. Color palette should be brighter and not somber as the current Shogun. Should be shot on location, without too much green screen. Theme is about friendship and the coming of age of these two women.. Be quite a trick to recast these two remarkable performers as teens.

Lady Ochiba knows Mariko is the best friend she ever had or could ever have. She regrets fate has come between that but her primary responsibility is to her son. Fate must do what fate must.

The entire series, Mariko's death was foreshadowed. She was going to die either by her hand or by another and she would welcome it.
