While I WILL admit to going for 8-orb chain attacks during my playthrough, I wasn't doing it because I thought I had to, or because I thought it was how you get damage. I was doing it because I was trying to get lots of overkill, and I was only going for it against bosses and UMs. I was also trying to get damage from everything else, and was trying to get a bunch of overkill bonus after using a Chain Attack on foes whose HP was as close to 0 as I could get it without killing them. Incidentally, I have also spotted a small mistake in your video. Upon performing a Full Burst, ALL party members perform a level IV special, but they do it simultaneously and you only have the QTE prompts for the pair you are controlling at the point of the Full Burst, while the AI handles the other two pairs doing their level IV special. Also, you didn't cover healing, and while I know it is pretty simple, there are some people who don't understand how you are supposed to do it, and at least one idiot who was trying to get all their healing from potions, presumably after unequipping their direct-heal Arts (I saw them in the recorded chat in a VOD of a stream once). Finally, while they're not particularly useful for endgame content, the masks that continuously generate aggro are quite useful while normal enemies are a threat, as they work even while your weapon is not drawn and cause enemies that spot you to aggro onto your tank instead of you, making it easier to run (and if you draw and sheath your weapon, the AI will stop and fight, and since the battle ends as soon as the player gets out of aggro range and dead party members revive and heal as soon as battle ends, this makes running even easier), and there are also specific UMs where running certain pieces of equipment can prevent big issues, like running spike damage reduction for foes with high counter damage, or reflect prevention/the item that saves you and gives Unbeatable once per battle against Artifice Ophion to prevent a full wipe to Barrier Field at the wrong moment (incidentally, using a level IV special on Barrier Field will actually cause an invincible effect tag to appear on your driver whenever they hit Ophion if they are not protected against the damage reflection, so you are ACTUALLY invincible during such specials, not just intangible or evading). Finally, while most Special Recharge pouch items are pretty bad, there is one item with 2 per second and two with 1.5 per second, which is enough to enable near-continuous use of level I specials (after the bonus charge from getting a Perfect) without ever using an Art when combined, and can thus be used to spam them. Not sure how good the DPS is, but it works decently well, and on Mythra (and sometimes Finch, if she feels like it) you can spam level II specials, which on Mythra is the really good one for AOE damage and general damage.

Great video. One thing you didn't mention was moving around mid-combat - it's not as important postgame but it's still relevant, even more so in the main game, and I see a lot of people wasting time moving inefficiently. If you ordinarily move around during combat, it'll be very slow. Moreover, you'll be wasting time you could otherwise be spending attacking. Fortunately, there is a way around both of these issues: Blade specials. When you send the weapon to the Blade for a special attack, the Driver is able to move freely at their maximum speed, and they also won't be wasting attacking time because the special attack will happen while you're moving around. ALWAYS use this time to reposition and collect HP pots.

I'm not the most experienced player of this game (I'm 60 hours in) But one thing that reaaaally peeves me about this game is... it doesn't feel interactive. I can see that there is a lot that you can do in this battle system, and pulling off combos is very satisfying. But I feel like a lot of the time against bosses (at least at this point in the game) they do a really powerful AOE attack with little warning, and it wipes out my team. Also, you can't pick up your friends after they have been toppled which just makes me feel powerless when it comes to defense. At least you can equip break/topple resist, but that's still not the most reliable thing. I guess I just need to get good, but I just liked XC1's visions and how they were telegraphed (except for that AOE vision bug) I'll admit, I may be a bit "elitist." I can apprecciate Monolith going for something different though, and I'm glad people have enjoyed it. It's just been a difficult transition Sidenote: I think a big part of why people are calling it slow is that the pace you are taught things and given new options is pretty slow at the start. You're stuck with Poppi a for quite a while being tora's only blade, it took the game 30 hours to give Rex his topple art, when in XC1 you're taught it in the first 5 minutes. Excuse the wall of text. I'm not meaning to hate on XC2. These are just things that peeve me so far.

Only when I got to know both the combination of blade specials and elemental bursts I found myself truly intrigued with the battle system and learned to love it. Next time playing X I'll need to look into one of your videos to dive into those mechanics as well.

You sound so excited when talking about the more complex details of art canceling and combat techniques, and the tone perfectly conveys the feelings I have for this game’s battle system. I thought it was going to be a joke video when I clicked, (memes like “use poppi qtpi and you’ve already won the game!) but it was actually a very descriptive and understandable guide on how to properly play the game (which I hope newcomers will come to and find out that the game is worth playing after all). Even if I didn’t need it, I’d like to thank you very much for this, because I think that a video presentation with speech like this can teach someone much more effectively than a few scattered read tutorials that don’t seem to matter much when they’re presented.

Incredible information. Playing Xenoblade 1 for the first time now is making me want to go back to Xenoblade 2, which I fell off of. The combat in 2 is a lot deeper than I gave it credit for.

So literally just started as of a few days ago and was disappointed after seeing just three skills per character, then vandham showed up, taught rex topple and then i realized that the other blade on Rex had launch. So imagine my surprise when i realized i could topple with Rex and also launch with rex while initiating a cancel that gave me a special increase. Long story short i damn near shit myself because i realized how deep the combat actually was. This game's great. Xeno 1 was awesome for pure customization and characters and decent combat. but Xeno 2? I've never got into as many random battles for just fun as much as i have in this one. Truly a fantastic system. I can see now why the Titanic Sank.

I stopped after wrapping up the story mode but found your channel cause I decided to finally try Torna to get ready for Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive edition. Holy crap this video has opened my eyes. I knew all that stuff about blade and driver combos but the thing that blew me away more then anything is how effective break was. Seeing you down these enemies with only level 2 blade combos and only having break active is blowing my mind.

I could have really used a guide like this so very long ago when I got into this game at first. You were definitely right when you said other videos on KZitem don't do a great job of explaining the most effective means to use the combat system. All of them just explain how the mechanics work and... you can get that from the in-game tutorials lol. So you've made content overviewing 2, X, Saga, and will cover 1 when DE drops. Any plans to talk some Xenogears in this space?

Good explanation. Though pouch items still feel like a band-aid for a system that should have just had faster recharge to begin with. They're just an annoying extra step that you have to keep re-upping but is never unavailable because you can quick travel back to anywhere at any time, so the timers and carry limits mean nothing.

Yes. This game is half baked garbage compared to XC1 and XC3. It's unfortunate that it ended up like this since Nintendo poached some of Monolith to work on stupid Breath of the Boring Collectothon, so there was a B grade team making this game.

i dunno about everyone else, but i personally love the pacing of mechanic drops through the story. I understand people thinking it's slow, but you're not meant to come out the box as a powerhouse, you're just a salvager who got caught up in some heavy shit, it gives you a sense of progression within the game's narrative, i like that. edit: excellent vid btw, really helped me get a better grip of things, you've really lifted the fog on this one, thanks ^_^

So I more or less "happen to stumble across this video" again and read my old comment. I don't suppose you're interested, but an update: I played again, and had a great time, and it's ALL thanks to you and other content creators who love this game, you guys have shown me how great it really is. THANK YOU. I finally pulled KOS-MOS at around the 250 hour mark, but here's the thing: _It was like a time warp._ I barely noticed how much time I was sinking into it just because I was enjoying the gameplay _so freaking much._ But I will say, once I finally pulled KOS-MOS, I just kind of went, "uhhhh, now what?" After that run, I eventually did break down and bought the DLC, and now I'm mid-way through a 3rd play-thru. I think Torna, The Golden Country... honestly doesn't add much to the lore, and I consider it overall a big waste of time. But the 25 legendary core boost in the main game has buoyed many of my standing complaints regarding the gacha system. A friend of mine who's playing for the first time said they were worried about breaking the balance pulling them, and I'm not sure I'm seeing that. I don't find myself taking on enemies 10 levels higher than mine, that just doesn't happen-- until the endgame. And since you can't even travel with all 3 blades until chapter 4, I don't think it's really possible to break the balance-- other than having access to more high-tier blades. Which you can't even extract their value until the late game. I didn't pull KOS-MOS, but I've decided that T-Elos, who has a _ridiculously_ high pull rate, is... "almost" as good. And a fun blade besides. If there's anything that breaks the "early" game balance, it really is Mythra. Eventually I'm planning to hit up the New Game+ mode for the first time, and from there eventually take on the Land Of Challenge. Really looking forward to that! Again, thank you so much!
