Thanks Tim for keeping the conversation going on mental health. My life changed when the 'family' courts (UK) decided that because my daughter's stepdad could afford better lawyers, that meant I was a 'bad father'. Felt 'not needed' ever since and that was 7 years ago. Needless to say, my mental health has still not recovered.

I read your comment and I can actually feel just how shitty things must have been for you, being the underdog at court, fighting for your rights with your daughter. I can only say, that time moves on, your daughter isn’t stupid, she’ll see the efforts you put in for her, courts can’t erase the father daughter relationship when it’s a good and healthy one. When she is making her own decisions , she may surprise you. You must get on with your life and enjoy as much as you can, you may be considering another family? Make a good life for yourself, that’s the key I feel. It has been for me. Many years after the initial trauma my daughter and I, talk every day! She is still, everything to me, and I know she values the efforts I put in for her. So keep putting the effort in, wherever necessary for your daughter, you will be glad you did one day.

Nobody is really talking about the shooter, the press are too busy down playing the whole thing so Trump doesn’t look like a hero. I couldn’t help thinking what a waste of that young man’s life. At 20 he’s barely an adult. Life has its ups and downs and goes through different stages. He may have been at a low point but with his whole adult life ahead of him. I also feel for the guy in the crowd who died, who again is not getting much coverage because the media are trying to make this look like nothing.

Hi Tim - valid points. I think that being a man generally in the West has been severely eroded since the early 1900's - perhaps since the end of WW1. There are not the rites of passage there once were - my first rifle, my first hunt, even my first duel, my first trophy kill, etc. Even the graduation Baden-Powell foresaw from Cub to Scout etc. Feminism has eroded much of what we held dear as being now part of "toxic masculinity". In fact men have soooo much we can be proud of - the whole world's infrastructure which affords us such great quality of life was built by men. So I think we have to be more proud of being a man, not swayed by feminist taunts, give ourselves purpose (one of my mottos is 'make a difference every day') which requires self-discipline and is easier for younger people if one has someone to look up to. That has also been eroded by the Marxist destruction of the family unit, the promotion of single parenting as equivalent (it is not) and the idea of the disposable male being promoted ("sisters are doin' it for themselves" fantasy). IMHO a return to traditional values is the solution but must come from within through self-discovery of personal fulfilment than any other mechanism. The missing key is how to promote that, in my opinion. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

As a woman, I wholeheartedly agree with everything you say. Unfortunately many people don`t see this and it`s very difficult to convince people that communism has taken over the west in the form of feminism and other "isms". I`ve tried to explain to people what`s going on but most don`t want to listen. I had to listen recently to a bunch of old women talk about women`s football and how women are not just equal to but better than men and how women should play against men in football matches. These women are in their 80`s and if they had a brain between them, they would have known that professional women`s football teams have played against men`s and even boy`s football teams (Dallas Under 15`s boys team beat US women`s national football team) and have been annihilated. It`s plain stupid as women are much physically weaker than men. The world has gone cuckoo. I want traditional values back.

Bullying. Schools and colleges are covered under the HASAWA act(1974), RIDDOR. Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurences Regulations. This covers incidents of abuse, assault, threats, injury and bullying in the workplace. Whether it's a visitor, employee or member of the public who's received inappropriate attention from the workplace. Schools don't advertise the fact, but by law under HASAWA(Health And Safety At Work Act) they are bound to protect their staff, visitors and pupils from harm, be it physical or mental. I had this discussion at a college more than 20 years ago when HASAWA came up, lecturers/tutors went into an absolute funk on this, refused to even acknowledge this or RIDDOR. So, being a nosey pongo I contacted HSE(Health and Safety Executive), they had a complete section covering bullying in the education sector. This was more than 20 years ago, but I also spoke to one of their staff, who admitted kids getting picked on is covered by HASAWA, and its a criminal offence to ignore or deny it, because they would be complicit.

It's an interesting point. Years ago I worked at a Home Depot, and we had a little guy working there who no one liked, and he would often talk about guns and so on. Probably as a cheap, easy way to get attention. He was a bit creepy, and eventually the company got rid of him. I often wonder about "those guys" and what he might have done, or how he might of behaved if he had someone willing to invest a bit of time into correcting his conduct and helping him out. We talk about people who are "looking for attention" as a bad thing, but is it really a bad thing? Or is it something for us (normalish people) to respond to properly?

He drove a school bus (as confirmed by one of the women in his neighbourhood - he drove her daughter to school) - presumably he'd been checked/cleared for that? There was no gap after his shots before they shot the boy. Trumps security had his gun trained on the boy before the boy had even taken a shot. There wasn't time for security to be 'looking' for him before he was shot. How old was the kid that shot Franz Ferdinand - 19? Nothing adds up - kid walking around with a rifle - how did he know which way they would face Trumps stand? Did he just rock up and hope he would be able to find a good place to take his shot......in such a rural area? Did he go to the venue in advance to plan - otherwise how would he know he was able to climb on to the roof? Where did he park his car? Why no drones?

Something that we're good on in the UK (I don't know about the USA) is safeguarding in schools and in higher education, calling out inappropriate behaviour or influence in that context, radicalisation, etc. It might not be a popular thing to say here... but I would say there are some influential online characters, people like Andrew Tate or Tommy Robinson, who take the idea of masculinity into the realm of toxicity. There is also the (predominantly online) culture of the 'incel' which ties in with this. It would of course be wild speculation on my part to say that these things have any bearing on what drove this young man to do what he did, but it did cross my mind as possibilities. When the truth hopefully emerges I think it will be instructive to know whether they played a part.

@@FastJetPerformance Well yes, masculinity can inherently be those things of course. Masculinity can also be warm, brotherly, nurturing, peaceful, agreeable and spiritual. I think the idea of toxicity really comes into play when the balance of these attributes is well out of whack or even eschewed entirely. Wouldn't you agree? I'm talking about society in a wider sense, rather than the more specific environment of eg frontline forces roles in national defence which is arguably and understandably different. In the case of politics, ideology is often more at play. At the extremes this can be shown in the sense of nationalism, racial prejudice, traditions, etc which may be totally at odds with a more progressive, modern world view. The "English Defence" league being a case in point - it's not at all about defence of the people at large but rather more an idea, a kind of warped idea to be honest.
