On the credits thing, here in Japan we get the credit 「友情出演」, which means 'friendship appearance'. This basically means the actor is appearing in a small role, or for a very low fee, due to friendship with the director, producer or whatever, and is basically saying 'just becaue I've done this for him doesn't mean I'll do it for anyone else'.

I worked for Television New Zealand in late 80's early 90's. In the event of a station emergency like a fire alarm or intruder, we had a stash of dusty-cased videotape labeled EMERGENCY TX. TX was our abbreviation for transmission. The one that always got hauled out was a James Last show from the 1970's. That show played quite a few times over more years than it deserved as we evacuated the building.

I was born in 1978 but as a teenager in the 90s I was massively into 1970s prog rock. The Internet wasn't a thing then and so it wasn't entirely straight forward to find out about all these 70s proggie bands that were big before I was born. I ended up buying quite a few albums based on how cool the cover art was. I can confirm that this isn't always the best way to buy music.

As a teenager in the early '70s my local record store had the usual huge racks of albums arranged alphabetically but at the end was a "Clearance" section with loads of albums I had never heard of by bands I has never heard of priced at about 1/3 the price of a regular album. I would often flick through this and pick up two or three purely on the basis of the cover art. Almost without exception they were good and a couple became firm favourites - one by Clear Blue Sky and one by Whalefeathers in particular.

I was going to say the same thing. I’m nearly 40, but still remember in my teens/twenties buying some albums based on the cover (Number of the Beast, Bat Out of Hell). I even bought albums based on t-shirts band members were wearing. Pre-internet generations and those there for the birth of it didn’t have reviews and streaming a few taps away, there was a much harder path to finding the gems.

There is a great font size story from Stargate SG-1. Richard Dean Anderson had just finished Macgyver and was bringing a lot of weight to this new show, so had star billing and his agent requested that his name should be in the same font size as the title of the show. The show agreed to this without thinking about it. When they came to design the titles, they realised their mistake. "Richard Dean Anderson" is a lot longer than "Stargate SG-1" and it wasn't possible to have them the same size without it looking ridiculous. The showrunner ended up showing Richard a mockup where he was credited as "hard Dean Anders" because that was all of his name that would fit. While he quite liked his new name, he agreed they could use a smaller font size. I don't think he had even known that clause was in his contract. (I'm guessing his agent had copied that clause from another client with a shorter name!)

Absolutely I've bought albums in the past on the strength of the cover As someone else mentioned especially with prog where a Roger Dean cover gave you an idea of what to expect. Different countries also change the album covers quite frequently due to censorship issues. Most of the American Beatles albums in the 60's were different covers, and sometimes had different track listings and running orders. There was an American compilation called Yesterday And Today that had a notorious butcher cover that was eventually withdrawn. David Bowies Man Who Sold The World original cover was Bowie wearing a dress. Of course that was beyond the pale for a lot of people back in 71, and the American release featured a cartoon cover. To add to the confusion when the album was re released in 72 in the UK it featured a picture of Bowie from the Ziggy era to cash in on Ziggy Stardust's success. Growing up in the 70's I always assumed that was the 'proper' cover, but the Cd has reverted to the original dress cover. That's another reason why Bowie seemed so prolific in the early 70's, once Ziggy became huge they started releasing earlier tracks from albums like Hunky Dory as singles, Life On Mars and Changes being two examples. One thing about credits that always puzzled me was the lightning speed on some old American shows. I'm sure that must have pissed off some of the actors and crew.

About album covers: Sometimes there have been different covers - and even titles - when albums are released in different regions, like The Beatles and Rolling Stones albums in the 60's. Another example is when a controversial album cover is later replaced, like Scorpions 1976 album "Virgin Killer". On the other hand, the somewhat explicit cover for XTC's 1986 album "Skylarking" wasn't used at the time, but was used when the album was reissued in 2010 (vinyl) and 2014 (CD). Then we have The Motors second album "Approved by the Motors" from 1978 where the album was soon reissued with a different cover because the record company thought that the band members were not looking good enough to front the cover.

Speaking of bad language from the outset: Do you guys remember the production company that had a black labrador with a frisbee in its mouth as mascot, and a voice said "Sit, Ubu, sit! Good dog!" (vruf!) For years I just thought the name "Ubu" was just some name of a dog. But then I learned about *"Ubu Roi"* the absurdist theater play from 1896 about a rude, crude, vulgar king named Ubu. The first word spoken in the play , "merdre" (the French word for "poop", with an extra "r") which pretty much sets the tone for the entire experience. Watching "Family Ties" with that knowledge adds a few layers haha!

There's an outlier with the book/album artwork. I read an article a couple of years ago about younger vinyl record collectors who buy purely on the basis of the artwork/packaging alone - they have no interest in who the artist is, very odd. Concerning album covers not changing, I released an album where the record label didn't consult me on the artwork, which I hated. When the licensing expires in the autumn, the album is being re-released on another label and it will most certainly have new artwork!

There must be many more... Oh, the Fall's 'country on the click' in two completely different sleeves - one a sort of mock primary colours Mondrian, the other a brownish photomontage of industrial buildings... Jimi Hendrix 'Electric Ladyland with nudes cover vs abstract photo of playing... the Beatles one's in America don't count because they hacked up the tracks, too, so why not the sleeves?

But then when VHS VCRs started to outsell Betamax VCRs, the industry, both porn and mainstream, consolidated on the widely adopted format. It made financial sense. The porn industry didn't create the trend. They followed - and reinforced - the it. (Video 2000 from Philips was also there. They're always ignored lol)

This is why I hate Netflix. They have made some decent shows. They've also made a bunch of duds. But.....they are given a guaranteed, slam dunk, home run, (whatever a good thing in cricket is), touchdown, back of the net, hit like "Dogs on Mars" and they pass? I hope they go bankrupt now!. Amazon Prime, you have been given the golden goose. Don't mess it up!

This is what John Williams used to make the Star Wars theme, taken from the film "King's Row" from the 1940s kzitem.info/news/bejne/x6yjt3x5pqyHkmUsi=DRIl4kPg3FDRiS7d

Erich Wolfgang Korngold is a legend! He also made the music for the Olivia de Havilland/Errol Flynn movies *Captain Blood* (1935) and *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938) We can say a lot about John Williams' influences/inspiration , but his music works so well BECAUSE it sounds like the classic Hollywood scores. It's a perfect match for big budget old-fashioned-but-updated pulp like Indiana Jones and Star Wars.

Without spoiling the season Finale of the Boys must have run into some issues with their story line after the shooting....theyre streaming but also scheduled programming. Course no1 seems to be saying much...maybe wer just so jaded as a society

Marina has been my favourite journo for at least twenty years but finding out she loves the Empire Strikes Back has really made 2024 for me.

I really like the show, but "I'm so bad at introducing the episode" is not as amusing as they think it is. First few times maybe, but not the umpteenth time.

After the dunblane massacre I was expecting to watch( probably) if I ruled the world with Clive Anderson It got pulled owing to the current events and a ripping yarns was put on instead. Tomkinsons Schooldays was the episode; at one point Michael Palin is reading the school notice board and there’s a notice The Following Boys have been Shot in plain view. Did someone know or was it a genuine error. Across the Andes by frog would have been a better choice

Why oh why oh why does the incredibly erudite Marina Hyde struggle so much with her intros to this podcast? There is only one obvious reason. It's the incredibly sexual chemistry with the intellectual Game of Thrones Mountain that is Richard Osman.

You could ask her about her top 3 Italian neorealist films or something. Top 3 "New Hollywood" soundtracks for movies not made by Lucas, Coppola, Scorsese or Spielberg . Top 3 silent movie era comedians.

I know he’s probably got the biggest built-in base, but it stupefies me every time Matt Smith is the first name credited on House of the Dragon when it’s primarily revolving around two main women characters (Emma PLAYS a woman, don’t come for me 🙄) who dominate all of the marketing imagery… gotta love Eleven, but there are hot young dudes and fascinating young women, and Matt Smith is just sort of… there… with top billing. Is it better with him? Yeah! (Mostly. To be honest, he requires my largest suspension of disbelief.) Should he keep his agent forever because that person is apparently a wizard from Oldtown? Also yeah. Because wtf lol

Ummm...Can you not end the episode with see you next tuesday? Considering what that is often used as a abbreviation for it may be good to avoid XD
