The hidden-ness vs. absence revelation really spoke to me. Praise God for always being present, even when He’s working behind the scenes. 💛

I enjoyed all the insights you shared. I think one more is that all the previous women in the line of Jesus had the appearance of problematical sexual improprieties yet were righteous, and that there is a similar implication with Mary.

Another point is I think there is an implied question with the genealogy, is whether David is a valid king according to the prohibition of marrying Moabites. There are some answers, but if the question is not asked, then it is not answered either.

@donj2222 This is the never-ending struggle of trying to keep our teachings under twenty minutes! So many squirrels to chase. As I'm sure you're aware, one of the suggestions made by scholars is that because Perez (the son of a Canaanite mother) is first in the genealogy and David is listed tenth, he perhaps represents the end of the ten generation ban on "Ammonites and Moabites and their descendants" from entering the assembly of the LORD (Deut. 23:3).

@@WalkingTheText Thanks, I have not read that before. What I think/have seen is that Ruth was written as a balancing text contra Ezra/Nehemiah to point out that David is, of course, a valid king of Israel and this was because Ruth was a God fearing Moabitess, since she was not a convert to Judaism, as she is called a Moabitess 5 times in Ruth, the latest being Ruth 4:10. So one should understand Ezra to be saying that the annulled marriages were to non-God-fearers as that is what the Moabite marriage prohibition refers to.

Were women marginalized because of the Scriptures?

That's a great question, and it really depends on who you ask. There's no doubt the Scriptures emerged from ancient patriarchal cultures which, by today's standards, would certainly be judged as having marginalized women. However, when you study the Bible in its original context, you'll often find that Judaism as well as Christianity were often far ahead of their time in terms of honoring the dignity and capacity of women. In fact, the sociologist Rodney Stark believes that one of the reasons Christianity attracted more women than men was for the very reason that they were treated with greater respect and dignity. That Jesus's genealogy includes so many women is itself a hint that the Kingdom he's bringing is beginning to put right all that sin has shattered in human relationships.
