I so relate to what you mentioned about shooting what you are familiar with. I felt the same way that the surroundings where I live were boring. But when you do take that photo, and it works, then you start to see more in the landscape that maybe you didn't see before. Love your video and your images.

Great video and advice. I live in the countryside in Sussex England and have always thought that theres only so many photos I can take of fields, farms, and rural scenes etc, but you have given me inspiration to get out this weekend and embrace my surroundings and make some photos unique to me and my area, thank you. Hi Paul, I used the word « instinct » like you (on a different topic), but got strongly corrected by the fact that instinct can’t be learned in the way you use it. It’s about inherent behavior enabling to achieve complex tasks. Loved your explanations and you should do more of these. You are not telling anyone what to do, but we are eager to hear your point of view on such topics. Now, you won’t act surprised , but if a semantic maniak corrects you, like I had the experience. Cheers

I really enjoyed watching this video. I just got back a roll of 35mm film I shot just taking photos of things on my way to and from work (I live in NYC) and discovered that the best photo I think I took was the one when I felt something and just shoot the shot. I think you're really onto something here :)

So true to embrace your surrounding! I moved around quite a bit in the US, and every time my surrounding was different and opened up new opportunities but also challenges. My shooting style also kind of adapted in each environment. And yes, I always let my intuition flow to see what might turn out worthwhile. In most cases I am right and happy with the result.

i totally agree with what you said and i think thats something what a lot of photographers need to hear and realise ... you can make the best picture in the world in the most boring and mundane place and the worst in the greatest and best looking place! What you call your home is one of the best places to do photography even when it dont look like it for your self

I'm actually scouting out landscapes to shoot this weekend. Great content, keep it coming. Your vlog definitely inspire me each and every time.

Hi Paul, good episode. I am often strengthened by the words (and I'm paraphrasing something here, that I vaguely recall.) "Fine art is the close, or careful, examination of the ordinary." And I think it is true, must of us are committed to limited patch of ground, and in that, we must find something, and some way to communicate our experience. Your comments about tourism are spot on. Isn't our struggle to see things once more for the first time - see our own tract with new eyes? Haere rā

Paul, this video got me thinking, that when I look back my photography has improved over the past 20 years and 99% of it is not because of technology. I have gone through the pain of disappointment and have now accepted that capturing "the one" is ver unlikely and the harder I try the farther away "the one" seems to go. BUT, many of my better photos have beem captured on my Iphone, simple because when the opportunity has presented itself I have had my phone with me. I started with Landscape 20 years ago and digressed into wildlife and bird photography, but more latterly I have been enjoying my photography by simplifying my approach and managing my expectations. Its a hobby for me, so its not that important. Your style and vlogs have certainly given me more insight and motivation to think more about what I am capturing. I am on a long journey but your vlogs have certainly made the trip more rewarding, thank you.

I would appreciate more vlogs along similar lines. Totally agree with your suggestion about embracing our familiar surroundings. The old saying about familiarity breeding contempt applies here. Yesterday, I put two rolls of B&W film through a new (to me), 6x6 camera. Composing in the square format in a nearby town that I am familiar with helped to open my eyes to new possibilities. Square composition in camera is quite different from cropping to square later in the computer. Walking around with a TLR spurred several conversations with interested strangers. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Great talk Paul. I think that people (incl me) find it hard to be inspired by their own daily environment because they live there and see it every day. It may help to post your photos on at least flickr to show others in order to get some feedback and admiration for your photos. That would probably give you a fresh POV on the environment that you may have taken for granted. Just IMHO.

'Embrace your environment' is, ironically, something I've really struggled with as a photographer since moving to NZ from the UK 6 months ago. I used to be a keen street photographer, but it just doesn't seem to work here for me. NZ landscapes are beautiful, but I can only find tired photographic cliches. I struggle to see anything else! The only angle I had (coincidentally) settled on recently was - just as you say - embracing the mundane. Rotovegas delivers this in spades. I had (coincidentally) also been trusting my instinct in developing ideas, but so far this seems to be delivering nothing but mundane photos 😂 Hmmmm....

Hi Alan, try to change your views on what "Street Photography" is... photographing everyday. I see a lot of people here doing street trying to get a "New York" vibe, and its just never going to happen. Loads of subject there in Rotorua, you just have to look at it differently and shoot your new "Everyday". This will mean growing some balls as a photographer and getting outside your comfort zone. Go check out a photographer by the name of Ans Westra, her main body of work is now 30 - 50 years old now but she has captured the essence of New Zealand perfectly. She is in my opinion the Robert Frank of NZ. Good luck on upsizing your undies👍

Yes Paul, be great to see more of this topic discussed in future videos. Stopping to take that photo you see out the corner of your eye when driving around your local area is a constant challenge. I often convince myself that I will get the shot 'next time' but the image you had in your mind often never returns, even when you return to that particular spot. I think for me it's often the clouds and the light are just not the same and the magic has gone.

Hey Paul, thats actually a really nice vlog buddy, with some insights into what makes you and your images yours. 'Visualisation' and 'conceptualisation' over equipment, and one [point] exaggerated by the shooting in film. Very Cool indeed. Going freestyle, and following your creative juices, is refreshing and one which i found myself doing lots during that last trip to the South Island. - ) Lots of take away messages here for photographers of all levels, and a sure linkage into some of the messages I want to try and communicate though my channel also. Bravo. We need to catch up! I have just supported your channel and bought your book. Look forward to getting my hands on that. Speak soon. Ewan
