Fmaj7 is important because if you add a 9 you get the opening chord to A Hard Day's Night.

Great question. First up, that's the name for that configuration of a G chord.. But.. The reason we added an 11th , is to keep our first finger on fret 1 of the B string through this whole exercise. That's the note C... So the G chord (G B D)is now built with G B D C. In relation to G, C is 4 notes away.. G A B C. BUT, we're playing C in the next octave higher, so we add another 7 degrees of separation. 4 + 7 = 11.. Or, G1 A2 B3 C4 D5 E6 F7 G8 A9 B3 C11 D5 E13 F7 G8.. Haha, I hope you're not more confused now.. I'll have to make some videos on chord construction soon! The voicing for Gadd11 chord in this vid is Low E String - G, A string - B, open D, open G, B string - C, High E string - G.. (G B D G C G)

Yeah but Fmaj 7 sounds vastly different than F major.

Well yes and no.. I wouldn't say vastly as the 3 notes in the triad F (F, A & C) are in the chord. We just add an E to that (F, A, C & E) which is only a semitone below the root note of F. But, yes there's a difference in the harmonic quality. Thanks for your comment.

@@GuitarPracticeHub3 notes of a Dm7 are in an F Maj also. If you drop the F on the D string. It’s just not the same chord. Practice practice practice is the only way to learn to play it. From what I see on lesson videos, instructors are scaring students with Barred chords. They make way too much out of them and most of them seem to do it. Students are hearing over and over again about these “dreaded” chords. They’re not hard and they’re a must. My first teacher made me learn them. After a while they’re very easy. If you don’t learn an open F, you won’t learn an open Dm7.

@@johndelconte9915 I hear what you're saying and thanks for the great comment! I agree that practice is what gets you there and chords are chords, no need to play them up as being anything to worry about. You've given me a great idea to make some laid back and supportive barre chord practice vids.

Fmaj7 is NOT a substiute for F maj .. just learn your chords properly, put some effort in and you will reap the benefits

That's great advice and how we all learn. Thanks for the comment. (Now why not learn both??)
