Is the pinky finger stiffened at the end a coincidence or the equivalent to the stiffened index finger while bowling thumb in? I bowl thumb out and have noticed lately some wrist fatigue. I’m looking for tips to strengthen my release and ease my pain while crushing these pins

When I’m straight behind the ball like in this drill, my hand wants to pop out on the side. But if I’m a little outside the ball and have the main part on my hand on the ball in the upswing I can make a “little inside move” with my arm on the downswing. It then seems like my hand is in the perfect position. I guess it depends on how we all learned or bowl when we were kids.

I read elsewhere that your throwing hand should be end up pointing straight down the lane, not raised up over your head. This will be pretty your release from accidentally flipping the ball upward if your thumb doesn’t make a clean release.
@raezor82
Жыл бұрын
Yeah you do want to project the ball forward, maybe even a little down into the lane (at least what I mentally try to do when I’m struggling). Norm Duke said that the pros get extra rotation from accelerating at the bottom just like how golfers create backspin. This will result in what has a more herky jerky look than the long flowing look usually seen from the women. The upper arm follow through is probably about the same, the men just tend to lock their elbow relatively in place, thus pointing the hand more towards the pins at the end.
@nickcuellar8593
Жыл бұрын
Beautiful game... what do you do to help create elbow bend. I feel im missing the pop at the end. Ive tried the norm duke get on one knee and push the ball.
@donkeydiehard879
Жыл бұрын
The elbow bend starts at the top of the arm swing, then "unload" at the bottom. The key is having a proper fit and most importantly a COMPLETELY relaxed arm swing. Daria is the master of this. Ultimately, the unloading of the elbow isn't necessary and depending on your age, can create some pain. If you keep your elbow in, arm swing relaxed and make sure your thumb clears before your fingers, you'll get plenty of revs without the unloading sequence.

@mtrithart

Biggest issue with the release is getting the thumb out of the ball. Many bowlers struggle to figure this out. That's why you see many with the hand on the top side of the ball at release.
@dmoore0079
Жыл бұрын
I did too. Then it kind of dawned on me just how much hidden power there is in the bottom of the swing - especially if you unload a bent elbow. That generates a very rapid, very strong transfer of ball weight to your fingers and pretty much guarantees the ball won't catch on your hand. Gotta do the turn, unload and release in one fluid motion though.

The only reason to bend your elbow and cup your wrist is to get your fingers BELOW the equator of the ball. If your hand and fingers are above the equator, you really have no way to give the ball any revs. Get below it, and you can. As you can see from her release, her hand is already well under the ball's equator, and so that's where her power and rev rate comes from.
