It's true. We don't mind using herbs but the only real spices we use traditionally are pepper, mustard and horseradish. If you're used to spicy food e.g mexican, Indian, etc British food can be a little plain. It's mostly designed to be filling and keep you warm. We're pretty good on sweets and desserts though, also cheese but as a British person myself I'd be the first to admit our food is quite plain. You can't blame us though, most of it is essentially designed to be eaten while drunk or hungover if you look at our history. Britain is a very diverse place nowadays though so we have lots of different restaurants, it's definitely not all pie and mash.

17 years ago I came over from Eastern Europe to visit London. One of the first British foods I tried was pie and mash, in a Richmond pub with a beautiful scenery. I remember finding it interesting, as I never had meat with sauce inside a pastey before. Yes, British food is mostly not spicy, and doesn't contain spices. Spicy food is not the same with food cooked with spices. Most European foods are not full of spices. But for some recipes you don't need them. European recipes use fresh or dried herbs and minimal seasoning. Sometimes you have to let the ingredients shine and taste of what they are, if that makes sense. Most British traditional dishes are based on post war cuisine, during the recession, when they hardly had anything and they had to make do. The other Northern countries in Europe have blander food compared to the rest of Europe, and that makes sense if you think of the weather/ climate. It makes sense to eat highly calorific meals if you live in a predominantly cold and wet area. Funny how no one attacks Alaskans for their cuisine 😂 Obviously, in hot countries like India, the food's flavour comes from spices. In some hot countries, spices were traditionally used to disguise the smell/ taste of old/ bad meats and fish. That is why people from hot countries traditionally "clean" their meat with lemon, vinegar, etc. since it might not be fresh or properly preserved. We shouldn't insult anyone's culture, it's common sense to have some decency and respect towards others and not insult their traditions. Not sure why it would be racist to mock other countries but not European ones. Food for thought 😂 BTW, I am Eastern European, I love trying and cooking foods from different cultures, my favourite at the moment is South Korea food, but I equally enjoy foods from all over the world. So keep an OPEN MIND and use your brain before you rush to insult other cultures and cuisines. Sending love to everyone 😊

British food = bland food 😂
@quziia
2 ай бұрын
if it’s bland, it’s probably because they cooked it without seasoning. this is common due to the fact if we cook without seasoning and put several on the table, the person eating can pick the seasonings and pick the amount to fit their exact taste rather than give everyone the same amount of everything since they may not like it

In western Europe, we have excellent quality ingredients. We do not need to slather everything in spices to disguise the rot and filth. Salt and pepper is usually more than enough to enjoy the flavour of the ingredients.

No such thing as "American" food. As American as apple pie? Apple pie being British 😂. Burgers and hot dogs? German. Fried chicken? British. Pizza? Italian. Mac and cheese? British. Everything you think is "American" isn't American, it's either European or Mexican 😂
@Karras353

The American diet does not include pies or mashed potato? I think you will find that if you actually look at what each nation is eating, there is a lot of common ground. Many a US based KZitem channel enthusiastically teaches how to cook things that are very familiar to us. Its hard to say what this specific example is like without knowing what is in the pie. But even as a British person, I find it looks underwhelming.

It’s not meant to be fancy. People rave about it for the nostalgia. For most it takes them back to a simpler time or to their childhood. It was literally meant to be cheap and easy and filling. Most foreigners don’t seem to understand that the majority of traditional “British” food was created post war and its purpose was to pack as much calorific content and to make you feel full for the lowest cost also what was available with rationing. But I promise you if you ate this food by a grandmother who lived through that time you would be blown away

For the best steak/mince or scotch pies in the WORLD, not just the UK you have to visit Stirling in Scotland. There's a bakery that's literally won the award best (insert pie filling here) in the world for every one of the pies on his menu. His steak pie and scotch pie won these awards ten years in a row after winning best in Scotland then the uk, Europe and then the world after travelling to America and competing against the other finalists

Honestly I live close to a pie and mash shop thts famous for its history. It’s not the oldest in london but it’s one of the oldest. Tried their liquor and pie and mash and I thought it was extremely bland and lacked salt too. I loved the eels though. I ended up finding another traditional pie and mash shop that’s not as local but still pretty close, and it was much much better. It was nowhere near as popular though and was pretty small/unknown but it was way better
