A new day, and I was ready to head East back “home” during my last legs of my 48 states in under 10 days challenge through the Iron Butt Association. Leaving Oregon, I had to find motivation today, and realized that my mileage towards my last stops was just about 1500 miles. So boom, I decided I was going to try for a Bun Burner Gold (1500 miles in 24 hours). I booked it through all of my stops…and almost too “fast”. With the elevation changes and not being as efficient on gas…my stops were cutting REAL close at times (15 miles left to my tank in one instance). My average tank went down from 200 miles to 180 in some cases (under the actual mileage I had planned for). The pine trees got taller as I cruised into Montana. Enjoyed carving through some of those curvy canyon interstate roads, it kept me going. I never realized just how large of state Montana is to ride through, it felt endless. As I neared my scheduled last stop for the night, I felt good to keep pushing on as I wanted to see how close I could get to the 24 hour mark. That was hard for me because mentally I knew I could do it, but from a safety side my husband pushed back. He knew there would be a lot more wild life out and about at night on the roads and with the limited amount of sleep I had been getting for the last week. He didn’t want me to take that risk, so as I was just a couple miles out of town…I reluctantly turned the bike around for the night. Stopped at the hotel I had originally planned to be at, finding that they were sold out…along with another hotel, but the third one closer to the actual highway had one more spot available. Made me realize that I probably made the best decision listening to him and not the “crazy/reckless” part of my brain and could be a bit delusional at this point.
