i have a questions regarding the first game, why not attack with kozilek the turn after you play him? you would have forced a chump block either by urza or the construct and also limited their mana through the annihilator while having the arch mage back as a basically unkillable blocker for the turn as always, thanks for the awesome videos, keep up your good work on mtg and weird AI implications
@selkokieli843

Opponent had a mana crypt that they would have been able to sack for the annihilator trigger. I think caleb thought it was better to give them a chance to die right away rather than guarantee them a turn or two of flipping urza.

I really like control in this format. In my experience, an early Mentor/Geist/Rabblemaster backed up by forces and the blue power spells wins a lot. Since nobody is playing removal, and players will often keep hands that have only 1 or 2 payoff spells, the early threat with protection is usually enough to win.

I’ve drafted a 3-0 control deck, you really want stuff like Narset and Hullbreacher. My 3-0 had a moderate amount of power, but 3 Narsets that I was often able to play turn 1-2 did the trick. Just being able to hold up counterspells at all times (stuff like pierce and either force really help here) while being able to make powerful plays is what you need to do to survive as control.

While these games can be really interesting due to the crazy stuff that can happen, I think the concept of a supreme draft is flawed. An environment that allows players to get most of what they want every time they draft, and get multiple copies thereof, might as well be constructed. You have little reason to draft anything but the optimal strategy because you will always have access to it. The interesting thing about Cube is that there is only 1 copy of each card and you wont always see a particular one, so you have to make do with what you get. The fact that you will (almost) always have the option to draft blue means that the format becomes one-dimensional quickly, just like regular constructed Vintage. That said, I'm primarily a viewer. I barely play MTG anymore, so it's totally possible that I'm missing some of the nuance that you experience as a player and because of that, I don't appreciate some of the finer aspects. However, it seems like the format is a lot less interesting when you have access to so much, and the cool cards from Vintage cube that typically define your games are a lot less special and interesting as well. The change of pace is nice for a minute or two, but I think this format will get stale fast.

I'm not a Vintage expert by any means, but this format seems very similar to that. I think you're underestimating Dark Confidants power, in that in Vintage people are usually happy drawing 1 or 2 cards off of him. Obviously he has his drawbacks, but in the wrong matchup he can be sided out, and in the right one he can draw you like 3 or 4 cards. I had a friend crazy enough to play Tombstalker and Bob in the same deck. He was a psychopath.

The reason expensive countermagic is normally bad is that you have to hold up that mana turn after turn until your opponent decides to let you use your counterspell, which means giving up the opportunity to do other things and potentially falling behind. Glen gets around that problem because you can invest the four mana whenever you want and then you can go back to doing other things with your mana. Your opponent doesn't get a chance to punish your expensive counterspell by making you hold up mana every turn.

@@CalebGannon LSV don't like it cause he feels like it's more sealed than draft which makes sense, I personally like it all the games are interesting, it's like a throwback to how Magic was played when people can have multiple Moxens and Lotuses but now have better finishers than Serra Angels or Juzam Djinns, if people actually played Legacy or Vintage there are always non-games even Modern has Neoform it is part of the game, aside from luck in the packs choosing the right cards like passing a Mox in a 2 Moxen pack to pick FOW for example is key to win some games, yeah it is broken but interesting and fun to watch tbh, maybe the only format where you can play multiple Moxens, Recalls, Time Walks and Lotuses.
